It is practical as a low-power accent or emergency light, but the small 60 × 60 mm panel limits charging. Build to the correct project revision, verify polarity before soldering, and treat the finished bottle as weather-resistant at best—not certified waterproof.
How the bottle lamp works
The bottle is mainly a diffuser and reservoir for the lamp assembly. The electrical system is a standalone solar photovoltaic (SPV) light with four functional blocks:
- Solar panel: converts sunlight into charging power.
- Charger and protection: regulates single-cell Li-ion charging and helps prevent unsafe overcharge, over-discharge or fault conditions.
- Rechargeable battery: stores energy for operation after sunset.
- LED and control circuit: produces light at selectable brightness levels.
The custom enclosure holds the panel, PCB, switch, LED and battery terminals at the bottle cap. Open Green Energy makes enclosure STL files available for a 3D-printed build.
Choose one circuit revision before buying parts
The documented versions are not interchangeable bills of materials. The Make: version uses a TP4056 single-cell Li-ion charger module with an LED-driver arrangement. Later creator materials identify an LP4060B5F charger and AP6685 battery-protection components on a revised design. Match the charger, protection parts, PCB and schematic to the same revision.

| Ready-made solar garden-light top | Depends on the product | Only use it if its panel, battery chemistry, charging voltage and LED output are compatible; this is an alternative implementation, not a tested equivalent. |
Parts for the custom build
The project’s parts list includes a small solar panel, one 14500 Li-ion cell, straw-hat LED, charger and protection components, resistors, diode, switch, PCB, battery terminals, JST connectors, heat-shrink tubing and wire. A soldering iron, nippers and a hot-glue gun are listed tools. A fabricated PCB or assembled board can reduce hand wiring, but availability should be checked when ordering.
Build procedure
- Print or prepare the enclosure. Confirm that the panel, LED, switch, PCB and battery terminals fit the chosen enclosure revision. Dry-fit everything before soldering.
- Install the panel. Seat the panel in the top opening and identify its positive and negative pads. Seal it from the inside after confirming the fit; adhesive must not shade the active cell.
- Install battery terminals. Fit the terminals for the 14500 cell and insulate exposed joints with heat-shrink. Never insert the cell until the circuit has passed a polarity check.
- Mount the LED. Place the straw-hat LED in its opening, observe the LED’s anode/cathode markings, and seal around the bezel and wires.
- Fit the switch and PCB. Secure the switch, charger/protection board and any connectors so vibration cannot pull solder joints apart.
- Wire by labels, not by wire color. Connect panel positive/negative, battery positive/negative and LED terminals exactly as shown for the selected schematic. Check continuity and polarity with a multimeter before connecting the battery.
- Close and seal the enclosure. Apply epoxy at enclosure joints and around cable exits where the guide specifies. Hot glue can hold parts during assembly but should not be treated as the sole weather seal.
- Prepare the bottle. Thoroughly clean and dry a soft-drink bottle. The guide describes adding water and a few drops of chlorine to discourage algae; keep the liquid away from the electronics and follow local chemical-handling guidance.
- Attach the enclosure to the cap. Make the cap-to-enclosure joint mechanically secure, then inspect for sharp edges, pinched wires and movement of the battery.
- Test charging and lighting. Expose the panel to strong sun, confirm charging behavior, then test low, medium and high brightness. Stop immediately if the cell, board or wiring becomes unusually hot, swells or smells abnormal.
Solar-panel sizing: why this design charges slowly
Open Green Energy’s 2022 project log estimates a panel target from its own assumptions: 2.75 Wh of LED energy divided by 90% assumed battery efficiency gives 3.05 Wh, and dividing that by 4.5 peak-sun hours gives 0.679 W, rounded to 0.68 W.

The enclosure provides only a 60 × 60 mm panel footprint. The log says panels suitable for a 3.7 V battery in that size commonly delivered about 0.4–0.45 W, so the designer selected a Sunpower cell rated at 0.55 W. Those are project figures, not a universal sizing rule: shade, angle, season, temperature, charger losses and battery state all change the result.
The creator reports that the mounted panel was insufficient for a larger-capacity battery and added USB-C charging as an alternate input. If you increase battery capacity, expect longer charging unless you also increase panel area or provide another charging source.

Reported runtime—and what it does not promise
In the creator’s stated test setup, the prototype’s backup times were:
| Brightness | Reported runtime | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 26 hours | Longest operation; lowest light output. |
| Medium | 12 hours | Intermediate brightness and battery demand. |
| High | 7 hours | Highest demand and shortest operation. |
These numbers come from Open Green Energy’s 2022 project log and one prototype. They are not guaranteed runtimes for another battery, panel, LED, brightness setting, weather pattern or circuit revision. Measure your own lamp after a full charge if runtime matters.

Weather resistance and construction-site use
Epoxy around joints and sealing the panel and LED can reduce water entry, but the documented steps establish no certified waterproof or ingress-protection rating. Keep the lamp out of standing water, driving rain and locations where a damaged bottle could expose live wiring. For a construction setting, protect the enclosure from impact, abrasive dust and heat, and inspect seals and cable strain relief regularly.

Choosing an implementation
| Option | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Custom PCB and 3D-printed enclosure | Exact fit, clean wiring, repeatable assembly and selectable brightness. | Requires fabrication, soldering and revision-specific parts; the small panel remains the charging bottleneck. |
| Ready-made solar garden-light top | Fastest route to an integrated panel, charger and LED. | Battery chemistry, charging limits and brightness may not match the bottle or a 14500 cell; compatibility must be verified. |
| Simpler cap-mounted build | Fewer printed parts and easier prototyping. | Less strain relief and sealing control, with greater risk of accidental shorts or mechanical failure. |
Troubleshooting checklist
- No light: remove the battery and check LED polarity, switch continuity, connector seating and the selected schematic’s terminal labels.
- Battery does not charge: verify panel polarity, unobstructed sunlight, charger-input voltage and that the charger/protection parts belong to the same revision.
- Very short runtime: test at a lower brightness, check battery condition and capacity, and measure whether the panel receives direct sun for enough hours.
- Water or condensation inside: stop using the lamp, disconnect the cell, dry and inspect it, then improve the panel, LED, enclosure and cap seals. Do not assume epoxy has made the assembly waterproof.
- Heat, swelling or odor: disconnect the battery immediately and retire any damaged Li-ion cell; do not continue testing a suspect pack.
