String of pearls (*Curio rowleyanus*, also known by its older name *Senecio rowleyanus*) makes a natural living accent: its rounded, bead-like leaves trail over the edge of a planter or shelf. For a display that looks good and stays practical, choose a bright, accessible spot and a shallow pot with drainage—not just a decorative container.
Choose a display that suits the plant and the room
The trailing stems are the feature. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends hanging planters and shelves to show them off in its growing guide. Either arrangement can work; prioritize bright light, access for care, and a position away from children or pets likely to chew the plant.

There is no universally best room or aesthetic: light, access, and household safety matter more than a particular décor style.
Pick a pot that works as a growing container
A decorative outer pot can complement the room, but the plant needs a shallow growing container with drainage and a freely draining medium. UW Extension recommends cactus mix and notes that pumice is one possible inorganic amendment; a specific brand or formula is not required. - Important Notes - Succulents may vary from pictures shown as they are living plants and grow differently throughout the year. Once you receive the package, please take it inside the house soon. Succulents' leaves are very fragile and may fall off during long trip. If your plant is missing some leaves upon arrival, just know they will grow back and thrive over time
- Check that excess water can drain out rather than collect around the roots.
- Make sure the pot is accessible enough to check the medium and care for the plant.
- If you use a decorative cover pot, remove the growing pot for watering or otherwise ensure it does not sit in pooled water.
Water by checking the medium, not the calendar
Let the growing medium dry completely between waterings, as UW Extension advises. The RHS recommends light watering after the compost dries and sparing watering in winter. These directions make a fixed interval unreliable: drying time varies with conditions, so check the medium rather than assuming that a particular monthly schedule suits every home.
- Check the growing medium before watering.
- If it has not dried, wait and check again later.
- When it is dry, water lightly and let excess drain away.
- Water more sparingly in winter.
UW Extension identifies overwatering and root rot as common causes of failure. A pot without drainage makes it harder to avoid water collecting around the roots.

Fill out the display with stem cuttings
Cuttings can help create a fuller arrangement. UW Extension recommends stem-tip cuttings 3–4 inches long; NC State Extension gives a 3–5 inch range. Both recommend exposing lower stem nodes and setting them in or against moist growing medium. See NC State Extension’s plant profile.
- Take a short stem cutting, using either extension source’s size range.
- Remove leaves from the lower part of the stem so the nodes are exposed.
- Place the exposed nodes in or against moist growing medium.
- Keep the medium lightly moist while the cutting establishes roots.
Plan for safe placement
Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets likely to bite or chew it. UW Extension says ingestion can cause vomiting or diarrhea and that sap may irritate sensitive skin. NC State Extension also advises avoiding ingestion, using gloves for handling, and monitoring children and pets. If sap irritates your skin, gloves are a sensible precaution.
