Make a concrete candle holder by casting a small-casting cement around a nested insert that forms a recess for a tea light or candle. Choose a mix made for small molds, follow its package directions for water and curing, and use the finished piece as a holder—not as an untested vessel for pouring wax directly into.
Choose the right cement and mold
For a small, detailed casting, start with a craft cement or fine casting concrete. Coarse general-purpose construction mixes may not capture small details or give the finish you want, and no single mix is best for every project. Compare products by their intended use and the workability, set time, and curing directions on the package.
A reusable silicone casting mold is convenient if you want a consistent shape or plan to make more than one holder. Alternatively, use a stable outer container and a smaller inner container to create the candle recess. The inner insert should leave enough room for the candle you intend to use.
Gather materials and work safely
- Small-casting cement or craft concrete
- A silicone mold, or a stable outer mold and smaller insert
- Mixing cup or bucket and a stirrer
- Water, measured according to the product label
- Waterproof gloves and eye protection
- Optional cement-compatible pigment
- A weight to hold a nested insert in place

Cast the holder
- Prepare the mold. Set the outer mold on a level, stable surface. For a nested-container mold, check that the inner insert will form the recess you want. If appropriate for your mold materials, lightly oil the surfaces that will contact the cement to help with release. Arrange a weight to keep the insert in position.
- Mix the cement. Read the package directions and add only the specified amount of water. If adding pigment, use one intended for cement and follow its instructions; QUIKRETE directs users to add coloring according to the bag directions. Do not treat another maker’s quantities as a universal ratio: Rayher’s example uses 215 g of sieved creative-cement powder and 20 ml of water for its particular project, not as a general recipe: Rayher concrete candle holder project.
- Fill and position the insert. Pour the mixture into the outer mold. Tap the mold gently or vibrate it lightly to help release trapped air and improve the surface. Place the insert to form the recess, taking care not to force it down to the bottom. Add the weight if needed to keep it from shifting.
- Let it set, then demold. Wait until the casting can retain its shape, and remove the insert and holder only when the product directions allow. Timing varies by product and conditions. Rayher’s project calls for an overnight initial dry, with further hardening that may take one to several days depending on the item’s size and temperature; use your mix’s instructions rather than adopting that timing automatically: Rayher concrete candle holder project.
- Finish and continue curing. Sand rough edges if needed, taking care not to damage the holder. Leave it to cure for the period specified by the product maker. Use the finished holder as intended
Place an appropriately sized tea light or candle in the recess. The cited project instructions support using a candle placed in a holder; they do not establish that a homemade concrete vessel is suitable for pouring wax into and burning a candle directly inside it. Keep the use to a candle seated in the recess, and follow the candle maker’s directions.
