The right backyard shower starts with one decision: do you want a seasonal, cold-water rinse station supplied by a garden hose, or a permanently plumbed shower with hot and cold water? The first can be a relatively simple outdoor fixture and privacy project; the second involves the home’s plumbing, drainage, and potentially permits. Choose a design only after deciding where its water will come from, where wastewater will go, how much privacy you need, and what local rules apply.
Choose a shower style that fits your yard and water supply
These approaches differ in more than appearance. A hose-fed station is a seasonal rinse option; a permanent shower is a plumbing project. A privacy enclosure can be added to either, but it changes the footprint, construction, and maintenance.

A screen or landscaping can provide a more open feel than a full enclosure, while framed panels offer more direct screening. Consider sightlines from nearby homes, exposure to wind and weather, upkeep, and the space needed to enter and use the shower. The cited project guide shows one panel-and-metal enclosure, but its dimensions are not a universal fit.
Plan water supply and drainage before choosing materials
Decide how water will reach the shower
For a hose-fed rinse station, the example in The Home Depot’s guide uses a hose, showerhead connector, and shutoff, with the hose secured to a post using plumbing brackets. Keep the shutoff accessible and consider how the hose will be removed or drained when temperatures drop. Before copying any construction detail, check that materials suit outdoor exposure and that the structure fits your site.

A permanent installation ties into the home’s water piping and may supply hot and cold water. That makes fixture selection and plumbing design more consequential. Ask the local building department whether permits or inspections apply, and consult a qualified plumber if the work involves new piping, hot water, or drainage connections.
Choose the discharge route early
Decide where shower water will go before selecting a ground surface or building an enclosure. Depending on local rules and site conditions, options may include a permeable surface, a dry well, or a connection to plumbing. The available guidance does not establish one drainage method as suitable everywhere. Confirm whether your intended discharge is allowed and what design requirements apply; Portland, for example, includes certain outdoor plumbing systems such as rain drains and drywells in its permit guidance.

Use privacy structures that suit the site
A freestanding enclosure can define the shower area and block direct views. The Home Depot example uses a post set in a hole with gravel and concrete, then frames panels around galvanized metal. Treat it as an illustration of a hose-fed concept, not as a site-specific structural plan: soil, wind exposure, materials, and local requirements can change what is appropriate.
- Full enclosure: Offers the most direct screening, but occupies more space and may need more upkeep.
- Partial screen: Can screen key sightlines while leaving the shower more open to air and light.
- Landscaping: Can soften the setting, but plant placement and growth affect the privacy it provides over time.
Check views from windows, neighboring properties, and paths before fixing the enclosure’s location. Choose outdoor-rated materials and details suited to your climate rather than assuming the example’s dimensions or materials will work in every yard.

Check plumbing rules, safety provisions, and permits locally
Model codes are not automatically the rules in force at every address. The local jurisdiction may adopt a different edition or amend it, so ask your building department which requirements apply to your project.
- Fixture fittings and hand showers: The 2024 International Plumbing Code requires fixture fittings to meet referenced standards and calls for hand-held showers to provide backflow protection through the fitting or an approved device. See the 2024 International Plumbing Code.
- Valves and temperature limits: The 2024 International Residential Code sets a maximum 120°F (49°C) setting for covered shower and tub/shower combination valves, adjusted according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It also includes provisions for shower valves and hand showers. Applicability depends on local adoption and amendments; see the 2024 International Residential Code.
- Shower drain outlet: The same 2024 International Residential Code specifies a minimum 1.5-inch shower drain outlet for the covered provision. Confirm the adopted code and its application locally: 2024 International Residential Code.
- Permits: Minneapolis says permits are needed for work including installing or replacing shower fixtures and water piping; its plumbing permit page was last updated June 30, 2026. Portland’s residential plumbing guidance covers work on pipes or fixtures and lists certain outdoor plumbing systems. These municipal examples show why the answer depends on location and scope, not what another city allows: Minneapolis plumbing permits and Portland residential plumbing permits.
Oregon’s state overview lists some minor repairs and hose-filled exterior features among work that may not require a permit, while separately identifying new plumbing and other work that does. That is state-specific guidance, not a general exemption for backyard showers elsewhere: Oregon residential permit overview.

Make the final choice with a short planning checklist
- Will the shower be cold-water and seasonal, or permanently connected with hot and cold water?
- Where will the water supply, shutoff, and any permanent piping run?
- Where will wastewater discharge, and have you confirmed local requirements for that route?
- How much screening do you need, and what footprint works with your yard’s sightlines?
- Will exposed hoses or plumbing need draining, removal, or other freeze protection?
- Have you checked permits, inspections, adopted code provisions, and amendments with your local building department?
