The material totals are Cricut compatibility counts, not independent tests of cutting speed, accuracy or durability. Cricut’s current comparison chart includes newer generations, so do not assume Maker 3, Maker 4, Explore 3 or Explore 4 features apply to these two original models: Cricut machine comparison chart.
Which machine fits your materials?
Choose Maker for specialty materials
The Maker’s Adaptive Tool System is the deciding advantage when a project genuinely needs a Rotary Blade for fabric or soft materials, or a Knife Blade for suitable dense craft materials. Cricut identifies both as Maker-only tools, and the Explore Air 2 lacks the drive mechanism required for Knife Blade use: Cricut blade and tool compatibility.
That makes Maker the safer long-term purchase for sewists, fabric appliqué, leather-oriented craft projects and makers who expect to experiment beyond paper and vinyl. The specialty blades, compatible mats and materials are additional purchases; the machine’s “300+ materials” claim does not mean every material is included or that every cut is guaranteed.

Choose Explore Air 2 for everyday craft stock
For decals, labels, signs, cards, iron-on apparel graphics and ordinary cardstock projects, Explore Air 2 covers the common workflow. Cricut describes it as working with “100+ materials, including popular materials like vinyl, iron-on, and cardstock”: Explore Air 2 support guide.
Explore Air 2 cannot be upgraded later with a Rotary Blade or Knife Blade. If those workflows are only a distant possibility, compare the price of buying the Maker now with the cost of replacing an Explore Air 2 later.
Fabric and dense-material workflows
Maker’s Rotary Blade is designed for fabric and other soft materials, while its Knife Blade is intended for some denser materials. Always verify the specific material and blade guidance before cutting; “dense” is not a blanket approval for any wood, leather or composite sheet.
Explore Air 2 can handle its supported materials with Fine-Point and Deep-Point options, but it cannot perform the Maker-only Rotary or Knife Blade workflows. For a project plan centered on unbacked fabric or a suitable dense material, that limitation is decisive rather than a minor specification difference.

Mats, cut length and Smart Materials
Both machines use adhesive mats in 12 x 12-inch and 12 x 24-inch sizes. Cricut’s loading instructions cover both product families: how to load and unload mats.
Neither original model feeds Cricut Smart Materials matlessly. If your priority is long continuous cuts without a mat, look at a newer compatible generation instead of choosing between these two older machines. Mat length, material size and any need to reposition sheets should be part of your workspace plan.
How material settings differ
Explore Air 2’s Smart Set dial
The Explore Air 2 has a physical Smart Set dial with predefined material categories. It is convenient for frequently used stock, but the dial is not a guarantee that every brand or batch will cut identically. Cricut recommends testing a small sample and adjusting settings when necessary: Cricut material-setting guidance.
Maker’s Design Space workflow
Maker material selection is handled in Design Space, where you choose a material setting for the installed blade and stock. That gives access to a broader tool-and-material system but places more responsibility on checking the actual material, blade condition and test cut.

Print Then Cut limitations
Explore Air 2 supports Print Then Cut on non-reflective white materials only. Cricut’s broader family guidance allows certain non-reflective white, lightly colored and simple-patterned materials on later Maker machines, while reflective or glossy stock remains unsupported: Print Then Cut compatible materials.
If you regularly print colorful stickers or patterned labels, confirm the exact machine and material rules before buying. Do not transfer newer Maker or Explore model capabilities to the original Explore Air 2.
Material thickness: why the number is not a guarantee
Cricut’s guidance suggests testing unlisted Explore Air 2 materials below 2.0 mm, but says successful cutting also depends on rigidity and density: Cricut material compatibility guidance. A sheet under that threshold can still fail if it flexes, compresses, contains dense layers or does not adhere securely to the mat. Treat the figure as test guidance, not a universal maximum.

- ALL-IN-ONE APPAREL CREATION SYSTEM: Includes Maker 4 die-cutting machine, heat press, tools, and vinyl and HTV (iron-on) materials so you can start making custom apparel immediately, saving time and money compared to buying items separately.
- At least one appropriate standard mat; heavy-use projects may require replacements.
- For Maker fabric work, a compatible Rotary Blade and suitable FabricGrip or other specified mat.
- For Maker dense-material work, a compatible Knife Blade and the materials it is designed to cut.
- Replacement blades, mats and project materials over time.
An apparently cheaper Explore Air 2 can become the less economical choice if you soon need Maker-only tools. Conversely, paying for a Maker and specialty accessories is unnecessary for a vinyl-and-cardstock workflow.
Decision guide by project
Pick the original Maker when
- Rotary fabric cutting is central to your projects.
- You need a Knife Blade workflow for a suitable dense craft material.
- You want access to QuickSwap and other Maker-compatible specialty tools.
- You accept buying specialty blades, mats and materials separately.
Pick Explore Air 2 when
- Your regular materials are vinyl, iron-on, cardstock and comparable supported stock.
- You value a physical dial for common material presets.
- You are comfortable with mat-based projects and white-only Print Then Cut material support.
- You do not expect to need Rotary or Knife Blade workflows.
Consider a newer generation when
- Matless Smart Materials and long continuous cuts are essential.
- You need broader Print Then Cut color support than original Explore Air 2 provides.
- You are comparing current machines rather than choosing between these two older models.
Bottom line
The original Cricut Maker is the more capable choice for specialty materials because its Rotary Blade, Knife Blade and Adaptive Tool System open workflows that Explore Air 2 cannot perform. Explore Air 2 is the sensible fit for common vinyl, iron-on and cardstock projects when its Smart Set dial and lower-complexity workflow matter more than expansion. Decide from the materials and tools you will actually use, then verify the exact model and current accessories in the listing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Cricut Explore Air 2 use a Rotary Blade?
No. Cricut identifies Rotary Blade as Maker-only, so Explore Air 2 cannot perform that fabric-cutting workflow.
Can either machine cut Smart Materials without a mat?
No. The original Maker and Explore Air 2 require mats; matless Smart Materials are associated with newer compatible models.
Is the Cricut Maker’s 300+ material claim a performance guarantee?
No. It is Cricut’s compatibility count. Actual results depend on the material, rigidity, density, blade, mat adhesion and tested settings.
