Construction has started on a new water treatment plant at Djarindjin, on Bardi and Jawi lands on Western Australia’s Dampier Peninsula. The WA Government describes the work as the second tranche of a $37 million investment in improved water infrastructure—not as a separately stated contract price for the plant. Completion is expected by mid-2027, according to the government’s 2 October 2026 announcement.
What is being built
The project adds treatment and storage infrastructure to water-source development already undertaken at Djarindjin. The WA Government says the current works include:
- A 4 km transfer pipeline.
- A new water storage tank with a stated capacity of 1.2 million litres.
- A treatment plant using electro-chlorination, which generates chlorine from saltwater for disinfection.
- A standalone solar-and-battery system intended to power the plant and borefield pumps and reduce emissions.
The announcement does not specify the plant’s treatment capacity, expected water output, detailed process specifications or quantified emissions savings. How the work fits the earlier Djarindjin project

Water Corporation’s 2025 annual report records five new Djarindjin bores drilled during 2024 and says the treatment-plant phase was scheduled to begin in 2026. The government’s 2026 announcement says the borefield and access road were completed in 2024. Water Corporation Annual Report 2025
Delivery, contractor and schedule
Water Corporation’s contractor is Baldja, described in the announcement as a majority Aboriginal-owned joint venture. The government projects that the work will support around 100 jobs through the contractor. That is an anticipated job count, not a reported employment result. Completion is expected by mid-2027; the date is a projection in the announcement, not a guarantee.

Aboriginal Communities Water Services context
The government describes Djarindjin as the first water treatment plant wholly delivered through Water Corporation’s Aboriginal Communities Water Services (ACWS) program. In the same 2 October 2026 statement, it says ACWS has invested more than $82 million in water-service upgrades and completed condition assessments in 131 communities to inform investment and planning. Those are program figures published by the government, not independent project-performance measures.

The earlier $20.4 million figure refers to the 2024 infrastructure investment and its borefield and access-track component; the available announcements do not provide a full cost breakdown reconciling the two figures.
