Five sites have clearly documented visitor programs; four more are frequently called California castles but need current official confirmation before you drive there.
That distinction matters. Some require timed reservations or shuttle transport, one is reopening on a limited basis after flood repairs, and another admits the public for tours only twice a year.
At a glance: which California castle fits your trip?
| Site | Category | How you visit | Planning issue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hearst Castle, San Simeon | Historic estate and state monument | Reserved tours; shuttle from visitor center | Book ahead; choose an accessible route if needed |
| Castello di Amorosa, Calistoga | Modern Tuscan-style winery castle | Purchased tasting or tour | Admission is tied to a tasting or tour |
| Scotty’s Castle, Death Valley | Historic desert landmark | Ranger-led programs when offered | Limited post-flood reopening; verify availability |
| Castle Green, Pasadena | Historic landmark and event venue | Public castle tours on rare dates | Usually closed to general walk-in visitors |
| Castle Air Museum, Atwater | Castle-named aviation museum | Self-guided museum visit; docent tours for groups and schools | Aircraft-area admission ends at 3:15 p.m. |
| Rubel Castle, Glendora | Castle-like private creation | Current public schedule not established | Confirm directly before planning |
| Paramour Estate, Los Angeles | Historic estate often described as castle-like | Current general-public schedule not established | Do not assume ordinary walk-in access |
| Winchester Mystery House, San Jose | Historic mansion with castle-like reputation | Current 2026 access details not established here | Check the official visitor page |
| Magic Castle, Hollywood | Castle-named private club | Current general-public admission not established here | Verify eligibility and dates before travel |
The first five have documented visitor information. The final four are leads, not confirmed 2026 day-trip recommendations.
1. Hearst Castle (Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument)
For a conventional castle visit, Hearst Castle is California’s strongest choice. California State Parks describes a 115-room main house, three guesthouses, two pools, 127 acres of terraces and gardens, and more than 20,000 art objects. It is a vast hilltop estate rather than a medieval fortress, but its scale, architecture and collections deliver the classic grand-castle experience.

How the visit works
All standard visits begin at the visitor center, where shuttle buses carry guests up to the estate. Official tour choices include Grand Rooms, Upstairs Suites, Cottages & Kitchen, Designing the Dream and Julia Morgan experiences. Reservations can be made online up to 60 days in advance, and advance booking is strongly recommended.
Who should choose it
Choose Hearst Castle for architecture, art, landscape design and a structured museum experience. California State Parks publishes accessible tour routes; check the current route descriptions when booking if stairs, walking distance or shuttle procedures affect your party.
2. Castello di Amorosa, Calistoga
Castello di Amorosa is a modern, purpose-built winery designed in the style of a medieval Tuscan castle. Its official history describes a 121,000-square-foot building with 107 rooms, four levels above ground and four underground levels. Construction took 15 years, and the castle opened to the public on April 7, 2007.
How the visit works
Entry requires purchasing a tasting or tour; it is not a free castle walk-through. Options include a roughly 75-minute Seated Reserve Tasting and approximately two-hour Diamond or Cheese, Charcuterie & Wine tours. Confirm the day’s schedule and age requirements before arrival.
What makes it different
This is the best match for visitors who want castle architecture combined with Napa Valley wine country. It is not an untouched European fortress or an old California residence: the castle effect is intentional, theatrical and relatively recent. Visitors who do not drink should ask the operator what participation options are available rather than assuming they can enter without booking.
Rank #2
3. Scotty’s Castle, Death Valley National Park
Scotty’s Castle is a historic desert landmark within Death Valley National Park, not a fortified medieval castle. Its remote setting and Spanish Colonial Revival character make the journey part of the experience.
Current access is the critical detail
The Associated Press reported on January 29, 2026, that the site had reopened for limited flood-recovery tours after roughly a decade of repairs. Visit California describes one-hour ranger-led tours and seasonal underground tunnel tours, but programs and access can change while recovery work continues.
How to plan responsibly
Check the National Park Service status immediately before travel. Do not rely on an old itinerary, assume every interior area is open, or treat a Death Valley drive as worthwhile without confirming that a tour is operating on your date. Remote roads, heat and park conditions add practical demands beyond the tour reservation itself.

4. Castle Green, Pasadena
Castle Green is a more-than-century-old building, a Nationally Registered Historic Monument and a Pasadena landmark. Today it functions primarily as an event venue, so its castle appearance does not mean daily museum access.
Public access is limited
The official site says Castle Green opens to the public for castle tours only twice a year. Those dates can change; confirm the next public-tour announcement before making a special trip. A private event booking is not the same as a regularly available visitor admission.
Best for
Castle Green suits travelers already visiting Pasadena who can match their schedule to an official tour date. It is a poor choice for an unplanned walk-in castle stop.
5. Castle Air Museum, Atwater
Castle Air Museum broadens the list beyond residences and estates. It is an aviation museum named for its location near the former Castle Air Force Base, with an outdoor collection of military aircraft rather than battlements, towers or royal interiors.

Hours and tours
The visitor page lists daily hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and last admission to the aircraft area at 3:15 p.m. Docent-led group and school tours are available. Confirm holiday hours and tour arrangements before setting out.
Why include it?
Choose Castle Air Museum if “castle” is a theme for your day but military history is the real interest. It pairs naturally with a Central Valley itinerary and should be labeled an aviation museum, not presented as a medieval castle.
Four often-mentioned sites that require verification
Rubel Castle in Glendora, Paramour Estate in Los Angeles, Winchester Mystery House in San Jose and the Magic Castle in Hollywood are frequently included in informal California castle lists. Current authoritative 2026 public-tour schedules, admission rules and general-access policies were not established for these four sites in the available material.
Rank #4
Rubel Castle, Glendora
Do not assume that a private or appointment-based attraction has regular daily admission. Confirm whether tours are offered, on which dates and by what reservation process.

Paramour Estate, Los Angeles
The estate is often described as castle-like, but a current general-public visitor schedule is not established here. Verify access with the official operator before treating it as a sightseeing stop.
Winchester Mystery House, San Jose
Its unusual historic mansion is commonly grouped with California castles, yet the current 2026 tour inventory and access details need checking on the official visitor page.
Magic Castle, Hollywood
The name is castle-themed, but current public admission, eligibility and date requirements are not established here. Verify those rules before planning a visit.

For a full historic-estate experience
Start with Hearst Castle. Reserve a tour, allow time for the shuttle system and select an accessible route if appropriate.
Best Value
For wine country
Choose Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga. Book the tasting or tour that matches your interests; the purchase is the gateway to entry.
For a desert adventure
Choose Scotty’s Castle only after the National Park Service confirms a tour on your date. Build the itinerary around park conditions rather than assuming the landmark is fully open.
For Pasadena architecture
Use Castle Green’s official public-tour dates as the anchor. Without one of those openings, it is primarily an event venue rather than a dependable walk-in attraction.
For aircraft and military history
Castle Air Museum offers the clearest castle-named alternative. Arrive before the 3:15 p.m. last aircraft-area admission time.
Practical checks before you leave
- Confirm the official operating date and admission format for every site, especially Scotty’s Castle and Castle Green.
- Book Hearst Castle reservations in advance; tours use mandatory shuttle transport from the visitor center.
- For Castello di Amorosa, reserve a tasting or tour rather than expecting unrestricted entry.
- Check walking, stairs, heat and remote-road demands; only Hearst Castle’s accessible tour options are specifically documented here.
- For Castle Air Museum, plan to enter the aircraft area before 3:15 p.m.
- Treat Rubel Castle, Paramour Estate, Winchester Mystery House and Magic Castle as unconfirmed until their own current visitor pages publish dates and rules.
Why there are not ten confirmed public castles in this list
The available authoritative information supports five visitable sites and identifies four additional names that still need current access verification. Presenting a tenth unverified attraction as definitely open would mislead travelers. California’s “castle” category includes historic homes, modern replicas, landmarks, private venues and themed museums, so the access label is as important as the architecture.
