Building materials really are beginning to perform two jobs at once: supporting structures and storing electrical energy. But the technology is still mostly at the laboratory-prototype stage. The most credible early applications are likely to be low-power sensors, structural-health monitoring and short-duration energy buffering—not concrete walls replacing a home’s lithium-ion battery.
What “building materials as batteries” actually means
A structural energy-storage material is designed to carry loads while also forming part of an electrochemical device. Depending on the design, it may contain:

- Positive and negative electrodes
- An electrolyte that allows ions to move
- Current collectors
- A separator or electrically insulating arrangement
- A mechanically stable matrix that carries structural loads
Cementitious materials can provide a porous, mechanically stable host for conductive fibres, metal mesh and electrochemically active coatings. Carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer composites can use their fibres as both reinforcement and electrodes. Research also covers geopolymer cement, bricks, recycled steel slag, waste glass powders, alkali-activated slag and fly-ash cement.

Ordinary concrete is not automatically a battery merely because it contains moisture or can be made electrically conductive. Conductive concrete may be useful for heating, sensing or electromagnetic shielding without storing meaningful energy. A genuine storage device needs an electrode-and-electrolyte architecture engineered for charging and discharging. A 2025 review of cement-based batteries and supercapacitors makes this distinction explicitly.
#1 Best Overall
Battery, supercapacitor or conductive concrete?
| Technology | What it does | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conductive concrete | Carries current or converts electrical resistance into heat | Heating, sensing and shielding | May store little or no useful energy |
| Structural supercapacitor | Stores charge electrostatically or at electrode surfaces | High power, rapid response and long cycle life | Lower energy density than a battery |
| Cement-based battery | Stores energy through electrochemical reactions | Potentially more stored energy than a supercapacitor | Durability and energy density remain unresolved |
| Structural battery composite | Uses structural fibres and matrix within an electrochemical cell | Can reduce duplicated mass and volume | Requires specialised composite manufacturing |
The terminology matters. Many of the strongest results in this field concern structural supercapacitors, not rechargeable batteries. Supercapacitors can charge and discharge quickly and withstand many cycles, making them attractive for repeated short bursts. Batteries are better suited to storing energy for longer periods but can face greater degradation and integration challenges.
What has been demonstrated?
A rechargeable cement-based battery
A 2024 study used carbon-fibre mesh electrodes coated with nickel oxide and iron-based electrode materials, embedded in a cement-based electrolyte. It reported an open-circuit voltage of approximately 0.72 volts, more than 100 charge-discharge cycles and a maximum reported energy density of about 7.6 watt-hours per square metre. The authors also noted that the performance remained below that of commercial alkaline batteries. The study is available through ScienceDirect.
Those figures belong to that particular laboratory prototype. They are not a universal performance level for concrete batteries, nor do they establish commercial-scale capacity, reliability or safety.

Research reviewed in 2025 reports cement-based supercapacitors with promising electrochemical behaviour and high cycle stability. Typical designs optimise the cement matrix, conductive fillers, carbon fibres, metal meshes and pore structure so ions can move while the component remains mechanically useful.
Some cement-based devices have powered small LEDs and electronic components. That demonstrates that the material can deliver useful electrical output, but it does not mean a building can run its heating, cooling or overnight demand from its foundations. The review discusses these demonstrations and their limitations.
Geopolymer-cement supercapacitors
A 2025 study developed a carbon-fibre-reinforced geopolymer-cement supercapacitor, using carbon fibres as electrodes and geopolymer cement as the electrolyte. The work supports the idea of building-integrated storage, but it remains a research demonstration rather than an established construction product. Read the geopolymer supercapacitor study.
Embedded current collectors
A 2026 study examined a cement-based double-layer capacitor with embedded current collectors, including carbon and steel fibres, steel-wire mesh and carbon-fibre mesh. It evaluated both mechanical properties and electrochemical behaviour. This is important because structural storage must be assessed as a component that carries loads, not just as a small active electrical sample. It nevertheless demonstrates feasibility, not building-code approval or commercial readiness. See the embedded-current-collector research.
The numbers in context
The reported 7.6 Wh/m2 figure sounds more meaningful when translated into a simple example. If a hypothetical component had 10 square metres of active area at that reported density, its nominal stored energy would be approximately:
7.6 Wh/m2 × 10 m2 = 76 Wh
That calculation excludes inactive structural material, packaging, wiring, power electronics, safety margins, usable depth of discharge and losses. It is therefore not a prediction of what a 10-square-metre wall would deliver in service.
Seventy-six watt-hours could be relevant to sensors, intermittent electronics or emergency indicator lighting. It is far below the capacity normally required to shift a building’s major heating, cooling or overnight electrical demand. A large wall can contain a great deal of material without containing a proportionally large amount of electrochemically active material.

Why combine construction and energy storage?
The proposed benefit is multifunctionality. If a wall, floor, bridge deck or vehicle panel must already be built, integrating storage could potentially:
- Save space otherwise occupied by separate battery cabinets
- Reduce duplicated structure and battery packaging in lightweight vehicles or aircraft
- Distribute small storage units across a large infrastructure network
- Support embedded sensors without frequent battery replacement
- Buffer electricity from local solar generation
These are system-level possibilities, not verified cost or emissions savings. The fibres, metals, coatings, processing, maintenance and end-of-life impacts would all need to be included in a life-cycle assessment. Integrated storage is not automatically cheaper or lower-carbon than a conventional battery.
Why supercapacitors may arrive first
Structural supercapacitors are well suited to applications requiring rapid, repeated bursts of power rather than long-duration storage. They can respond quickly, tolerate frequent cycling and potentially support sensors or monitoring equipment that wakes periodically, transmits data and then returns to a low-power state.
That makes them a more credible near-term fit for:
- Structural-health-monitoring sensors
- Wireless infrastructure-monitoring networks
- Traffic and bridge monitoring
- Small embedded electronics
- Energy buffering for intermittent devices
- Emergency or indicator lighting
- Self-powered sensing systems
A conventional battery still has a major advantage when the requirement is to store a substantial amount of energy for many hours. The 2025 review identifies high power and cycle life as supercapacitor strengths, while cement-based batteries still need improvement in energy density and cycling performance.
The central engineering problem: strength versus electrochemical performance
The properties that help a material store charge are often different from those that help it carry loads.

Strength versus porosity
Energy storage benefits from internal surface area, connected pores and short paths for ion movement. Structural concrete generally benefits from a dense, strong matrix with controlled moisture and few defects. Increasing porosity can improve ion transport while reducing strength, durability or resistance to environmental exposure.
Conductivity versus integrity
Concrete is normally a poor electronic conductor, so researchers may add carbon black, graphite, carbon fibres, steel fibres or metal meshes. These additives can affect workability, bonding, crack behaviour, cost, corrosion risk and fire performance. Adding more conductive material does not automatically improve the complete device; the electrical network must remain compatible with the cement matrix and its structural role.
Cracking and ageing
Cracking, delamination, corrosion, drying, wetting, freezing and fatigue may change electrical resistance, ion transport, capacity, voltage stability and short-circuit risk. A crack that is primarily a durability concern in ordinary concrete could also become an electrical fault in a storage component.

Construction quality becomes electrochemical quality
Performance may depend on mixing consistency, fibre orientation, curing, moisture content, electrode placement, contact resistance, surface preparation, temperature and humidity. A carefully prepared laboratory specimen is not automatically equivalent to a large cast-in-place wall or precast panel manufactured within normal construction tolerances.

A conventional battery can be isolated and replaced as a discrete unit. A battery integrated into a wall, foundation or bridge may be difficult to inspect, repair, remove or decommission. Building owners would need a clear answer to a basic practical question: what happens when the electrical function fails but the structural component still stands?

Safety is a complete-system issue
Cement itself is not flammable, but the complete device may include carbon materials, metal electrodes, binders, electrolytes, wiring, connectors and power electronics. Safety testing would need to cover overcharge, short circuit, impact, fire, moisture ingress and failure propagation. The outer material alone cannot establish battery safety.
Codes, certification and liability
Broad adoption would require confidence in structural design, electrical safety, fire testing, durability, battery certification, inspection, warranties, insurance and end-of-life handling. The research identified here does not establish broad building-code approval or an established certification pathway for these systems.
Recycling
A component combining cement, carbon fibre, metals, coatings and electrochemical additives could be harder to dismantle and recycle than ordinary concrete. Any claimed sustainability benefit would need to account for separation and disposal at the end of the component’s life.

How to evaluate a claimed “battery building material”
A serious assessment should look beyond a headline voltage or energy-density figure.
Electrochemical evidence
- Energy density by mass, area and volume
- Power density and operating voltage
- Charge-discharge efficiency
- Usable capacity and self-discharge
- Cycle life and degradation rate
- Operating temperature and humidity range
Structural evidence
- Compressive, tensile and flexural strength
- Elastic modulus and fracture toughness
- Fatigue, creep and shrinkage behaviour
- Freeze-thaw, water and chloride resistance
- Fire performance
- Mechanical performance while charging and discharging
System and manufacturing evidence
- The proportion of active to inactive material
- Cost per usable kilowatt-hour and per square metre
- Electrical interconnection and monitoring requirements
- Repairability and replacement strategy
- Recyclability and end-of-life handling
- Safety under overcharge, short circuit, impact and fire
The strongest evidence would include independent replication, full-cell demonstrations, long-duration cycling, full-size or near-full-size components, realistic structural loading and environmental ageing. A tiny active coupon should not be compared directly with a complete commercial battery pack unless structural, electrical, thermal and protective components are counted on both sides.
What comes next?
The field needs to move from promising specimens to infrastructure-scale evidence. That means multi-year durability studies, standardised testing, realistic construction methods, full-scale prototypes, cost analysis, safety certification and demonstrated inspection and repair procedures.
A 2026 review of structural-energy-storage-integrated materials identifies walls, floors, bridge decks, vehicle bodies, aircraft fuselages and electronic casings as potential application areas. These remain research directions, not products that ordinary construction crews can specify and install today.
