Verdict: The TP-Link Tapo T100 is a very good low-cost indoor motion sensor for automatic lighting, especially if you already own a compatible Tapo hub. It is less of a bargain for new buyers once the required hub is included, and it is not a complete security system: it detects movement, but cannot identify people or provide visual evidence.
In the US Tapo store, the T100 was listed at $17.99 on August 18, 2026, reduced from $19.99. The required Tapo H100 hub was listed at $22.99, putting the basic hardware cost at about $40.98 before tax and shipping. A T100-and-H100 bundle was listed at $41.99, making it worth checking the bundle price before buying separately.

#1 Best Overall
- 【Reliable Long-Range Connections】The Tapo Hub operates on a lower frequency broadband, resulting in fewer signal interferences and ensuring stable connectivity for all your devices throughout your home. With a maximum connection distance of up to 30m, the Tapo Hub outperforms wireless network systems in the 2.4 GHz band. *Our internal laboratory tests confirm the coverage and range of the Tapo Hub, but keep in mind that actual results may vary depending on environmental conditions.
- 【Wide Range Detection】Tapo T100 is capable of detecting motion within a 120° angle and up to a range of 23 feet (7 meters).
- 【A Low-Power Way to Connect Everything】The Tapo Hub serves as the central hub for your Tapo smart home, linking smart sensors, switches, and buttons via an ultra-low power wireless protocol. This technology extends the battery life of devices by up to 10 times, in contrast to devices powered by the Wi-Fi protocol.
- 【Adjustable Viewing Angle & Sensitivity】Its compact size makes it effortless to install, and it comes equipped with an adjustable body and customizable detection range options of 3m, 5m, and 7m.
- 【Smart Action】With Tapo Smart Hub H100, you can trigger a Shortcut or control Tapo devices (such as smart plugs, smart lights and smart switches) based on sensor detection or with a button press. (*Tapo H100 cannot directly connect to Tapo smart plugs or smart lighting, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is required.)
It is important not to confuse the T100 with an occupancy or presence sensor. It detects movement, not identity, and a person sitting still may not generate another motion event.
Does the Tapo T100 work without a hub?
No. A compatible Tapo hub is required for the T100’s smart functions. The sensor is wireless to the hub, not a self-contained Wi-Fi product. TP-Link lists the H100, H200, H110 and H500 among compatible hub families, subject to hardware version and regional compatibility.
The T100 also uses region-specific Sub-1G radio bands. A sensor imported from another market may not pair with a hub sold in your region, so match both products to the intended market. TP-Link’s regional compatibility information is the safest reference.
Price and the real cost of ownership
| Purchase | US price signal seen August 18, 2026 | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tapo T100 | $17.99 sale price | Existing Tapo hub owners |
| Tapo H100 | $22.99 | Low-cost lighting and sensor automations |
| Tapo H200 | $39.99 | Broader security and camera-related setups |
| T100 plus H100 bundle | $41.99 listed bundle | New Tapo buyers |
These are dated US-store prices, not guaranteed permanent retail prices. The sensor’s headline price is attractive, but a new buyer also needs a hub and may need a Tapo bulb, switch, plug or camera to make the motion event useful.
Which Tapo hub should you buy?
Tapo H100: the sensible budget choice
The H100 is the right starting point for most T100 lighting projects. TP-Link says it supports up to 64 Tapo devices, includes a siren rated up to 90 dB and offers 19 ringtone options. It can coordinate low-power sensors while Tapo plugs and lights remain connected through their own network connections.
Choose the H100 for hallway lights, bathroom routines, simple notifications and a basic hub alarm. It is unnecessary to buy a more advanced hub solely to automate one light.

Tapo H200: better for expansion
The H200 makes more sense if you expect to add compatible cameras, a video doorbell or a broader alarm setup. It provides alarm and chime functions and supports camera-related capabilities, including local storage features where supported. Check the exact camera, storage and Matter compatibility for your region and firmware.
Tapo H500: for camera-centered systems
The H500 is aimed at more comprehensive Tapo security installations, with local storage and enhanced camera-management functions. It is excessive for a single motion-triggered light. Choose it only when you specifically need its camera and storage capabilities.

The range and angle are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of reliable coverage in every room. Furniture, temperature, mounting position and the direction of movement all affect performance.
The magnetic mount is convenient on suitable metal surfaces. Adhesive provides more flexibility, but removal can damage paint or wallpaper. In an independent T3 review, the enclosure was described as awkward to open for battery replacement, and the reviewer’s sample did not include screws or wall plugs. Those are reviewer observations rather than proof of a universal manufacturing defect.

- Check the CR2450 battery orientation and charge.
- Confirm that the sensor and hub are compatible regional versions.
- Use the instructions for the exact hardware version.
- If multiple hubs exist, confirm that the intended hub is selected.
- Remove and re-add the sensor only after recording any existing automations.
- Check TP-Link support pages and firmware notes before assuming the sensor is faulty.
Automatic lighting is where the T100 excels
The T100 is particularly useful in hallways, staircases, bathrooms, closets, utility rooms, garages and entryways. It does not control a light by itself: you also need a controllable Tapo bulb, switch, plug or scene.
A practical hallway routine is:
- Detect motion.
- Check a time condition, such as after sunset or during nighttime hours.
- Turn on the Tapo light.
- Keep it on for a defined period.
- Turn it off after no further motion is detected.
The 4-to-60-second detection interval lets you balance responsiveness against repeated triggers and battery use. Start with a short-to-moderate setting for a hallway and adjust it after living with the automation. A longer interval can reduce activity but may make re-triggering feel slower.
Do not treat a timed “no motion” rule as proof that a room is empty. Someone reading, working or resting may remain still long enough for the light to switch off. Use a generous timeout in bathrooms, offices and living rooms, and test the automation under normal conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSecurity use: useful as one layer, not a complete alarm
The T100 can send motion notifications, trigger a Tapo hub siren and switch on lights as a deterrent. It can also be combined with Tapo contact sensors and cameras, and TP-Link describes event-history functionality for detection times.
However, the T100 cannot:
- Identify whether the movement came from a person, pet or environmental source.
- Verify that an intruder is present.
- Provide video evidence.
- Guarantee protection outdoors.
- Replace professional monitoring or emergency response.
For a DIY security setup, use the T100 for movement, a Tapo T110 for doors and windows, and a camera for visual confirmation. A hub alarm and phone notification are useful alerts, but they are not equivalent to a monitored alarm service.

Adjustable sensitivity can help reduce unwanted activations, but the T100 is not pet-proof. A dog or cat crossing the detection zone can still trigger it, while reducing sensitivity too far can create missed events.
TP-Link rates battery life at up to two years under laboratory conditions. Frequent triggers, cold temperatures, weak wireless conditions and repeated testing can shorten that figure. Budget for eventual CR2450 replacement rather than treating the claim as a guarantee.
Alternatives: choose by ecosystem
The T100’s strongest advantage is inexpensive, straightforward integration with Tapo devices. Other ecosystems may be a better fit when the surrounding hardware matters more than the sensor’s price:
- Philips Hue: a natural choice for homes already built around Hue lighting.
- Aqara: worth considering for a broader sensor platform and Matter-related compatibility, subject to the current model and region.
- Eufy: more logical for buyers already committed to Eufy cameras and security products.
- Home Assistant-compatible Zigbee or Matter sensors: suitable for technically confident users who want vendor-neutral automation and accept more setup and maintenance.
These are ecosystem distinctions, not claims that another sensor is universally faster, more reliable or better value. If Matter-first interoperability, richer presence detection, outdoor sensing or professional monitoring is your priority, compare alternatives before committing to Tapo.

Who should buy the Tapo T100?
- Existing Tapo owner: Strong buy for inexpensive motion-triggered lighting and basic alerts.
- New buyer wanting cheap lighting automation: Buy it with an H100, preferably as a sensibly priced bundle.
- Security-first buyer: Use it as one part of a larger setup with contact sensors and cameras, not as the entire security solution.
- Multi-platform or Matter-first buyer: Compare other ecosystems before adding a Tapo hub.
The Tapo T100 earns its “great value” reputation only when judged as part of the complete system. For an existing Tapo household, its low price and useful lighting triggers make it an easy recommendation. For a new buyer, the H100 changes the calculation but still leaves a relatively inexpensive starter system. Its limitations—hub dependence, regional compatibility, PIR blind spots and lack of visual verification—are acceptable for lighting and basic DIY alerts, but not for a complete security service.
