A Lixie clock recreates the layered glow of a Nixie display with 5-volt, individually addressable LEDs and laser-etched acrylic—not gas-filled tubes or high-voltage drivers. The original IEEE Spectrum project used four Lixie displays, an Arduino Nano, a USB-powered circuit, and a custom red-oak base. It remains a compelling maker project, but its 2018 prices, parts, software, and availability should not be treated as current build instructions.
For a new project, prototype one display first, confirm that its library and wiring match the hardware generation, then choose an Arduino Nano for a local clock, an ESP8266 or ESP32 for network time, or an RTC-equipped design for dependable offline operation.

What is a Lixie?
A real Nixie tube is a glass cold-cathode gas-discharge device. Selecting one of its wire electrodes causes the gas around that electrode to glow. The tube therefore needs a suitable high-voltage supply, current limiting, and a driver circuit.

How the layered glow works
- A WS2812B-style RGB LED injects light into the edge or base of the display.
- The light travels through clear acrylic, largely remaining inside because of total internal reflection.
- Laser-etched regions scatter that light toward the viewer.
- Ten acrylic planes, each etched with a different numeral, are stacked together.
- Lighting one plane makes one numeral visible; reflections from the unlit planes create depth and the floating, tube-like effect.
The result is an optical illusion rather than a glowing wire electrode. It generally looks most convincing from the intended viewing angle and can appear less uniform from the side.
The original IEEE Spectrum build
The January 2018 article describes a four-digit clock assembled from four ready-made Lixie displays. Each display was reported at US$38 at the time, a historical figure rather than a current price. The controller was an Arduino Nano, and the author made a custom base from approximately 6-millimeter (1⁄4-inch) red oak.
The setup was powered over USB, with the display current limited to 400 mA for that particular four-digit configuration. That value is not a universal USB limit or a guarantee for every Lixie revision. Brightness, LED behavior, wiring, and the number of displays all affect the actual load. The author selected a warm color intended to resemble an amber Nixie tube.
The article is valuable as a design reference, but it does not supply a complete reproducible build: there is no full wiring diagram, complete bill of materials, exact base drawing, verified current measurement for every condition, or complete current software guide.
Original Lixie or Lixie II?
Lixie II is a successor product, not simply a new name for the original display. Reported changes include a redesigned housing, easier mounting, eight screws in the base, a modular construction intended to produce more glow, and an eleventh customizable pane.

The Tindie listing observed for this article showed a price of $33.99 per digit kit and an “On a Break” availability message. Check the product page before designing around it; the price and availability can change, and the kit may not include your controller, power supply, enclosure, or timekeeping hardware. A powered base kit was listed at $20 on the Lixie Labs store page.
Do not mix the original Lixie’s mechanical instructions, photographs, library calls, or expected kit contents with Lixie II documentation. If the display generation is uncertain, identify the hardware first and use the library and examples supplied for that version.

- Four original Lixie displays or four compatible Lixie II digit kits.
- An Arduino Nano-class board for a local clock, or an ESP8266/ESP32 for Wi-Fi time.
- A properly rated regulated 5-volt power supply.
- Data, power, and ground wiring suited to the total current and cable length.
- A bulk capacitor near the display power input; the original project lists a 1000-μF capacitor.
- An optional real-time clock module for accurate offline timekeeping.
- An enclosure or base that supports the display bodies without clamping the acrylic.
- Appropriate soldering, woodworking, laser-cutting, or 3D-printing tools for the chosen enclosure.
Use the official Arduino hardware catalog when selecting a controller. The exact board matters less than matching its voltage, pins, library support, and timekeeping method to the display.
Wire one display before building the clock
The original Lixie project describes a four-wire-style interface consisting of 5 V, ground, data in, and a serial data output for chaining. A typical arrangement is:
5 V power supply ──────> 5 V on every display
Power ground ──────> GND on every display
Arduino data pin ──────> DIN on first display
First DOUT ──────> DIN on second display
Second DOUT ──────> DIN on third display
Third DOUT ──────> DIN on fourth display
Check the markings on the actual hardware: data must enter DIN, not DOUT. Connect controller and display grounds together. For multiple bright displays, distribute 5-volt power robustly rather than relying on thin jumper wires or routing all current through one small connector. Measure the completed circuit instead of assuming the original 400-mA setting applies.

An ESP8266 or ESP32 outputs 3.3-volt logic. Whether that reliably drives a particular 5-volt WS2812B-compatible input depends on the display revision, supply voltage, wiring, and signal margin. A level shifter may be required. Reports of successful direct connection are not a universal compatibility guarantee.

The original project identifies Connor Nishijima’s library and shows a constructor pattern such as lix(DATA_PIN, NUM_LIXIES);. Treat that as an example, not a promise that every current release uses the same API. The Lixie II library listing records version 1.3.1, released November 25, 2019, but that date does not establish active maintenance or current compatibility. Download the exact repository version and examples associated with your display.
Give the display an accurate time source
The Lixie hardware displays digits; it does not keep accurate time. The original Nano project used its controller’s millis() counter and reported that one ceramic-resonator-based Nano ran approximately 0.3 percent fast. That is about 26 seconds per day, and it can vary with temperature. The observation applies to that board and environment, not to every Nano.
Arduino Nano
A Nano is a good choice for a simple demonstration or manually set clock. It is familiar and many Nano versions use 5-volt logic, but a software-only clock will drift. Use an RTC if the clock should remain useful after power cycles.
RTC module
An RTC provides a better offline source. Read hours and minutes, format them as four digits, and update the display once per minute or second. Provide for backup-power condition and periodic calibration rather than assuming every inexpensive RTC is perfectly accurate.

ESP8266 or ESP32
A Wi-Fi controller can obtain time through NTP, the approach noted in the original article. It is convenient for automatic correction, but the firmware must handle startup, lost Wi-Fi, invalid time, time zones, and daylight-saving changes. ESP32 offers more capacity, while ESP8266 is closer to the platform cited by the original project. Both require checking 3.3-volt logic compatibility.
Raspberry Pi or other Linux board
A Linux single-board computer is useful when the display will also show network data, dashboards, or scripted content. It brings greater software overhead and is less appliance-like than a microcontroller.
A robust connected clock can synchronize over Wi-Fi and retain time with an RTC fallback. Do not show a plausible but invalid time while the system is waiting for its first synchronization; use a startup animation or recognizable error pattern instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a stable base
The woodworking is the main custom-fabrication challenge. The original author found the concealed openings and cutouts more difficult than the programming. Since the original article does not provide enough information to reproduce its base precisely, make the enclosure from the dimensions of the displays you actually receive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Measure each display body, acrylic-stack thickness, mounting point, and cable exit.
- Make a full-size cardboard or paper template with the proposed digit spacing.
- Check the viewing angle and ensure the openings hide the display edges without touching the acrylic.
- Leave clearance around each stack so assembly does not force or twist the panes.
- Reserve a rear cavity or removable rear panel for the controller, power entry, and data chain.
- Add strain relief so the cable cannot pull on a display.
- Use a recessed opening, guard, or transparent cover to reduce accidental knocks.
For the original look, approximately 6-mm red oak was used. Alternatives include a laser-cut acrylic frame, 3D-printed brackets, aluminum extrusion, or a simple printed enclosure. Build the mock-up before cutting the final material.

Troubleshooting
No display output
- Measure 5 V at the display under load.
- Confirm a common ground.
- Check that data enters DIN and that the sketch uses the intended pin.
- Verify the library matches the display generation.
- Confirm the configured display count.
- Check whether the supply voltage collapses when the LEDs illuminate.
The first digit works but later digits do not
Inspect the DOUT-to-DIN links, then test each display alone. Add displays one at a time. Suspect power drop, a damaged unit, an incorrect count, or signal degradation from long data wires.
An ESP8266 or ESP32 is intermittent
Investigate 3.3-to-5-volt signal compatibility and try an appropriate level shifter. Also check the board definition, library, supply noise during Wi-Fi transmission, and whether network startup is blocking display updates.
The clock drifts
Changing display code cannot correct an unstable time base. Replace millis()-only timing with an RTC or NTP, and define behavior when NTP is unavailable or the RTC backup supply is exhausted.
Acrylic is broken or misaligned
Do not disassemble a display unless the manufacturer’s instructions for that hardware explicitly require it. Avoid overtightening, provide assembly tolerance, and protect the stack in a case. User reports about fragility are anecdotal rather than a controlled reliability study.
Is a Lixie clock worth building?
Choose Lixies when the goal is a distinctive display and a hands-on electronics or enclosure project. They offer the Nixie aesthetic without the high-voltage circuitry of a conventional tube clock, and they are easier to animate and recolor.
Choose real Nixies when authentic tube physics, vintage construction, and the exact glow behavior matter more than low-voltage simplicity. Choose generic edge-lit acrylic when fabrication flexibility and potentially lower cost outweigh the time required to design the optical stack, LED mounting, alignment, and software. Choose an OLED or segmented LED clock when readability, low cost, and dependable timekeeping are the priorities.
The biggest practical uncertainties in 2026 are sourcing the defining display hardware and confirming current software support. If Lixie II is available and its documentation matches the kit, it is the most direct route for a new build. If not, an existing original-Lixie project may be worth preserving, while a scratch-built edge-lit display is the fallback for makers who can fabricate the acrylic and mechanical parts themselves.
