To check resistance safely with a digital multimeter, switch off and isolate the circuit, verify that no voltage remains, place the black lead in COM and the red lead in VΩ, select Ω, then touch one probe to each end of the component or conductor. Read the displayed value and its unit: Ω, kΩ, or MΩ.
Never measure resistance on an energized circuit. External voltage can produce a false reading, damage the meter, blow its fuse, or create a shock and arc hazard.

What an ohms measurement tells you
Resistance is the opposition to current flow, measured in ohms and represented by the Greek letter Ω. A digital multimeter applies a small internal test signal and calculates resistance from the response.
The meter measures the resistance through all available electrical paths between the probes. If a component remains connected to parallel resistors, coils, lamps, semiconductor junctions, or other circuit branches, the displayed value may not be the resistance of that component alone. This is why an in-circuit reading can be misleading. Fluke explains the parallel-path limitation here.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.

What you need
- A digital multimeter with an Ω function.
- Intact test leads with undamaged insulation.
- The resistor, wire, fuse, switch, heating element, or other component being tested.
- Optional alligator-clip leads for hands-free testing.
- The component marking, schematic, or manufacturer’s service specification.
For ordinary component checks, a basic DMM is usually sufficient. High-voltage insulation testing is different: it requires a dedicated insulation-resistance tester, not the ordinary resistance function of a handheld DMM. For example, the Klein ET600 insulation tester applies selectable 125, 250, 500, or 1,000 V DC test voltages and measures insulation resistance up to 4,000 MΩ.
Safety first
- Switch off the equipment or circuit.
- Unplug it or disconnect its supply.
- Remove batteries and other independent power sources.
- Discharge capacitors, particularly in power supplies, motor drives, televisions, appliances, and camera flashes.
- Set the meter to voltage and verify that no hazardous voltage remains.
- Inspect the meter and leads for cuts, exposed conductors, loose plugs, or damaged insulation.
- Keep your fingers behind the probe guards and use suitable eye and electrical protection.
Resistance and continuity testing require a de-energized circuit. Fluke’s meter instructions and Klein’s safety guidance both warn against resistance testing on live circuits.
Check the red-lead jack
Before touching the probes to anything, confirm:
- Black lead: COM.
- Red lead: VΩ, Ω, or V/Ω.
Do not leave the red lead in the A, mA, or 10A jack. This is a common mistake after measuring current and can cause a dangerous short when the meter is subsequently connected incorrectly. Jack labels vary, so follow the meter’s manual.
A CAT rating describes the environment in which the meter and leads are designed to be used; it does not make resistance testing on energized wiring acceptable. For example, the Fluke 110 is specified as CAT III 600 V under IEC 61010-2-033. Use a correctly rated meter and leads for the installation, and stop if the circuit cannot be positively de-energized.
How to measure resistance step by step
- Turn the selector to Ω. Some meters combine resistance with continuity, diode, or capacitance; press the function button until resistance is selected.
- Choose auto-ranging if available. With a manual-ranging meter, begin with a range higher than the expected resistance.
- Touch one probe to each end of the component, wire, or contact being tested.
- Maintain firm contact with clean, unpainted metal. Avoid touching both probe tips or exposed terminals with your fingers.
- Wait for the display to settle.
- Record the number and unit shown: Ω, kΩ, or MΩ.
- If the result does not make sense, isolate the component and repeat the test.
For ordinary passive resistance, probe polarity normally does not matter. Electronic circuits containing semiconductor junctions or other active paths can behave differently when the probes are reversed.

Understanding the display
Near 0 Ω
A very low reading usually indicates a closed connection or low-resistance conductor. It will not necessarily be exactly zero: the leads, probe contacts, connectors, and meter contribute some resistance.
Touch the probes together first and note the baseline. For more precise low-resistance work, use the meter’s REL or zero function if available, or subtract the baseline from the measurement. A standard two-wire DMM is not a precision milliohm instrument; lead and contact resistance may be comparable to the value being measured. Fluke’s 8808A documentation describes two-wire, four-wire, and relative-compensation methods.
A finite value
A reading such as 220 Ω, 4.7 kΩ, or 1.2 MΩ indicates measurable resistance within the selected range. Compare it with the component’s printed value, color bands, schematic, or service specification.
Include tolerance in your judgment. A 1,000 Ω resistor rated at ±5% may legitimately measure approximately 950–1,050 Ω. Temperature can also change resistance, particularly in heating elements and temperature-sensitive components.
OL, O.L., or 1
This generally indicates an open circuit or resistance beyond the selected range. It can mean:

- Additional Tips - Please take off the cap before using the test leads. Check the manual for more usage information.
- The component or conductor is broken.
- The resistance exceeds the meter’s range.
- The probes are not making contact.
- The component remains connected in a way that prevents a useful test.
The exact display convention is model-specific. On many meters, an open pair of probes normally displays an overload or open indication. If the component should conduct, try a higher manual range, improve contact, and isolate the component before declaring it faulty.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA fluctuating or changing value
Changing readings can result from a capacitor charging from the meter’s test signal, semiconductor junctions, poor or oxidized contact, a temperature-sensitive component, or an intermittent wire, switch, or connector. A capacitor may naturally show a changing resistance, but resistance mode is not a substitute for a capacitance or leakage test.
Resistance versus continuity
| Function | What it shows | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Resistance (Ω) | A numerical resistance value | Comparing a component with its specification |
| Continuity | An audible or visual indication below a model-specific resistance threshold | Quick checks of wires, fuses, switches, and connectors |
A continuity beep does not mean exactly zero ohms or prove that a connection is suitable for high current. Thresholds vary by meter. The Fluke 110, for example, specifies beeping below 20 Ω and stopping above 250 Ω; the Fluke 12E and Klein MM500 use different specifications. Check your meter’s manual rather than relying on a universal value.
Testing common components
Resistors
- Switch off and isolate the circuit.
- Remove at least one resistor lead from the circuit when possible.
- Measure across the two resistor terminals.
- Compare the result with the marked value and tolerance.
A reading close to zero may indicate a shorted resistor; OL may indicate an open resistor. In-circuit readings are not conclusive unless other electrical paths have been considered.
Wires and cables
Disconnect both ends from the circuit and measure end to end. A low reading suggests continuity. To find an unintended short, test each conductor against the other conductors and against the shield or ground where applicable. Flex the cable gently while watching the display; an intermittent break may appear as a fluctuating or open reading.

Fuses
Remove the fuse or isolate it from the circuit, then measure between its terminals. A good fuse generally reads very low resistance; OL generally indicates an open fuse. Do not rely solely on visual inspection.
Switches
With power disconnected, measure across the switch contacts:
- Open position:
OLor very high resistance. - Closed position: low resistance.
An unstable or substantially higher-than-expected closed reading can indicate damaged, contaminated, or worn contacts.
Heating elements
Disconnect the element from the appliance wiring and measure across its terminals. Compare the result with the service specification. As an estimate, the expected operating resistance can be calculated with:

R = V2 / P
For a 240 V, 2,400 W element:
R = 2402 / 2,400 = approximately 24 Ω
This is only an estimate because resistance changes with temperature. The appliance manufacturer’s specification takes priority.

Motor windings
Disconnect the motor and measure each winding according to its wiring diagram. Compare the windings with one another and with the manufacturer’s specification. Also check for unintended continuity between each winding and the frame, but do not treat a standard DMM result as proof of insulation integrity. Insulation weakness may appear only at higher test voltage, and motor resistance alone cannot establish winding health under load or mechanical condition.
Batteries
Do not use resistance mode to determine battery health. A battery is an energized source and can produce misleading readings or damage the meter. Use the voltage function, an appropriate load test, or the manufacturer’s prescribed procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why in-circuit readings can be wrong
When a component remains installed, the meter may measure paths through:
- Parallel resistors.
- Coils or transformer windings.
- Semiconductor junctions.
- Power supplies and control boards.
- Motors, indicator lamps, and other branches.
Parallel paths usually make the displayed resistance lower than the isolated component’s value. Disconnect one component lead, remove the component, or follow the equipment service manual when the reading is unexpected.
When a normal DMM is not enough
Use a dedicated insulation tester when you need to evaluate insulation with an elevated DC test voltage. A normal DMM may show a high resistance but cannot replace a megohmmeter for the specified insulation test.
For very small resistance values, use a four-wire ohmmeter or dedicated low-resistance tester. Four-wire measurement reduces the influence of test-lead and contact resistance, while ordinary two-wire measurements include those effects.
Surprising-reading troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the black lead is in COM and the red lead is in VΩ.
- Confirm the meter is in Ω mode, not current, voltage, diode, or continuity mode.
- Touch the probes together and check the lead baseline.
- Test a known resistor to confirm meter operation.
- Verify zero voltage with the voltage function.
- Discharge capacitors and remove batteries or other supplies.
- Clean the test points and improve probe contact.
- Remove or isolate one component lead.
- Select a higher range on a manual-ranging meter if the display shows overload.
- Check the meter battery, fuse, leads, and manual.
If the circuit cannot be safely isolated, or if the reading concerns building wiring, distribution equipment, high-energy systems, or insulation integrity, use the appropriate qualified person and test equipment rather than guessing.
