There is no universally best weed-and-feed product or application date. Choose one only when its label covers the weed and grass you have, its timing suits the weed, and applying its fertilizer also makes sense for your lawn. If those conditions do not line up, treat weeds selectively and fertilize separately when needed.
Use this guide to compare labels and decide whether a combination product fits your lawn. Product formulations vary, so check the current label and local extension guidance before buying or applying anything.
How to choose a weed-and-feed product
- Identify the weed. Determine whether it is an emerged broadleaf weed, a grassy weed, or a weed you are trying to prevent before it germinates.
- Check the herbicide and listed weeds. Confirm that the product label lists your target weed and that its pre-emergent or post-emergent purpose fits the weed’s stage.
- Confirm your lawn is eligible. Check the label for compatible turfgrass, geographic use, and restrictions.
- Check the fertilizer rate and timing. Make sure the labeled fertilizer application suits your lawn and local recommendations at that time.
- Review application conditions. Check watering and weather directions, reseeding intervals, and precautions around desirable plants, trees, and shrubs.
No universal “best” brand is supported by the reviewed sources. Formulations and labels vary, and the sources do not provide comparative product testing. Compare products by their listed weeds, active ingredients, turf compatibility, timing, fertilizer rate, water directions, reseeding interval, and precautions—not by brand name alone.
What to compare on the label
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Target weed and active ingredient | The label must list the weed you want to control and provide directions for its growth stage. |
| Pre-emergent or post-emergent use | A pre-emergent is intended to act before the target weed germinates; it will not control that weed after it has emerged. |
| Turfgrass and geographic use | Use only where the label permits your lawn type and location. |
| Fertilizer analysis and application rate | The combined product’s fertilizer rate may not suit the lawn’s needs at the same time as its herbicide application. |
| Water, weather, and reseeding directions | These affect how and when to apply, and whether the product conflicts with seeding plans. |
| Precautions for desirable plants | Some herbicides can injure trees, shrubs, or ornamentals, including through roots in treated lawn areas. |
UF/IFAS notes that a combination product’s labeled rate may not supply the amount of fertilizer the turf needs or the amount of herbicide needed for control. Do not try to make up the difference with extra applications unless the label and local recommendations allow it.

When to apply weed and feed
There is no nationwide application date. Pre-emergent timing depends on when the target weed germinates; post-emergent timing depends on the weed, its growth stage, and the label. Fertilizer timing depends on active turf growth and local recommendations.
Pre-emergent products
Apply a pre-emergent before the target weed germinates. Maryland Extension notes that crabgrass germination begins after soil temperatures are above 55°F for several days; this is regional guidance, not a universal calendar rule. Follow the product label and local extension advice. A pre-emergent applied after its target has emerged will not control that target.
Post-emergent products
Post-emergent products are intended for weeds that are already present. Confirm that the label lists the weed and that the directions fit its growth stage and local conditions. Do not assume a product that controls one kind of weed will control another.

Fertilizer timing
The herbicide’s timing may not match the lawn’s fertilizer needs. In North Florida, UF/IFAS Duval County describes an early pre-emergent window that can arrive while a lawn is dormant, before fertilizer is appropriate; it advises fertilizing when turf is actively growing. That example is regional, not a schedule for every lawn.

When to skip weed and feed
- There is no confirmed weed problem, or the product does not list the target weed.
- Weeds occupy only a small part of the lawn; a targeted treatment may avoid exposing areas that do not need herbicide.
- Fertilizing now conflicts with your lawn’s seasonal needs or local fertilizer guidance.
- The lawn is newly seeded, recently seeded, or about to be overseeded and the label’s reseeding interval is not satisfied.
- Desirable trees, shrubs, or ornamentals may have roots in the treatment area. Some herbicides can injure plants beyond their visible canopy.
- Weather, watering, turf type, or other label conditions are not met.
Labels are product-specific. For example, an EPA label for one weed-and-feed product includes precautions about desirable plants and application conditions that could cause runoff; do not treat those directions as universal instructions for other products.
Alternatives to a whole-lawn application
When there are only a few weeds, consider hand removal or a selective spot treatment labeled for the target weed and turf. Fertilize separately only if the lawn needs it. University of Nevada, Reno Extension cautions that whole-lawn applications expose areas beyond the weeds to herbicide, and Maryland Extension also advises against combination products when fertilizer timing is inappropriate.

A combination product may be a reasonable convenience for a widespread, uniform weed problem if both the weed control and fertilizer rate fit the lawn. UF/IFAS notes that uniform weed populations are relatively uncommon, so a combination product is not automatically justified just because it handles two jobs.
Safety and label checks
Read and follow the current label before use. Check the listed turf, target weeds, application directions, weather and watering requirements, reseeding interval, and precautions around desirable plants. Avoid conditions that could move the product off target or cause runoff, and keep it away from areas the label says to protect.
Local extension recommendations can help interpret timing for your area. Regional guidance—such as crabgrass temperature information for Maryland or fertilizer timing advice for North Florida—should not be treated as a nationwide rule.

FAQ
What weed and feed should I buy?
Start with the weed you need to control, then confirm that the product label lists that weed and your turfgrass. Check its timing, fertilizer rate, application directions, and precautions. There is no universally best brand supported by the reviewed sources.
When should I apply weed and feed?
It depends on whether the product is pre-emergent or post-emergent, the target weed, your location, and when your turf should be fertilized. Follow the label and local extension guidance rather than a nationwide calendar date.
Should I use weed and feed on my lawn?
Use it only if the product’s weed control and fertilizer both fit your lawn at the same time. If weeds are sparse or fertilizer timing is unsuitable, spot-treat weeds and fertilize separately if needed.

Can I use a pre-emergent before overseeding?
Check the product label’s reseeding interval. If the interval is not satisfied, skip the application or choose a plan that does not conflict with seeding; pre-emergent use can prevent desirable seed from establishing.
Will weed and feed control weeds that have already emerged?
Only if the product is intended for post-emergent control and its label lists the weed at the relevant growth stage. A pre-emergent applied after its target has emerged will not control that target.
Can herbicide in a weed-and-feed product harm trees or shrubs?
Some ingredients can injure desirable plants, including through roots in treated lawn areas. Read the specific label’s precautions and avoid use where it warns against treatment.
