Gnats in the House: 4 Common Causes and How to Track the Source

“Gnats” may be fungus gnats, fruit flies, drain flies, or phorid flies, and each points to a different breeding site. Compare their clues, test likely sources, and remove the damp soil, fermenting food, drain film, or decaying material sustaining them.

“Gnats” is a catch-all name for several small indoor flies, and the right fix depends on which one you have. Check their appearance and likely breeding habitat, then test suspected sources: damp plant soil, fermenting food, drain film, or other damp, decaying material. Traps can help monitor adults, but lasting control means finding and removing the breeding source.

Compare the Four Likely Sources

Use these clues to decide where to inspect. Location is a useful starting point, not proof: adults may move around the home or gather at lights away from where they are breeding. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommend identifying the flies and checking likely habitats before treating.

Likely source Clues Where to check First useful action
Fungus gnats Tiny, slender, dark, mosquito-like flies; often seen around plants, windows, or lights. Damp potting mix, plant saucers, seedlings, or other moist organic material. Let soil dry between waterings and use yellow sticky cards to monitor adults.
Fruit flies Stout-bodied flies, roughly 1/8 inch long, often with reddish eyes. Overripe or damaged produce, wet trash-can bottoms, food spills, drink residue, and unrinsed recycling. Remove fermenting food and clean residue; traps may reduce adults temporarily.
Drain flies Small, grayish, fuzzy, moth-like flies that often rest near sinks or tubs and fly short distances. Drains, wet cracks, condensate pans, and damp sites with debris. Test likely drains, then clean the implicated drain or trap.
Phorid flies About fruit-fly-sized, hump-backed flies that may run or hop before taking flight. Garbage, damaged disposals, drains, wet plant soil, or other damp, decaying material. Find and remove the decaying source; investigate concealed unsanitary sources if numbers are large.

How to Track the Source

  1. Identify before treating. Small flies can have different breeding sites, so a generic treatment may miss the source. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service recommends identification as the first step in control.
  2. Use location as a clue, not proof. Check where adults gather, but remember they can move around the home and appear near sinks or lit windows without breeding there. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach makes this distinction in its guidance on fungus gnats.
  3. Inspect likely habitats. Check damp soil and saucers, produce and food residue, trash and recycling, drains, and other damp areas with decaying material.
  4. Test a suspected breeding spot. For a drain, lay clear packing tape across part of the opening, leaving room for flies to emerge. Check it periodically for trapped adults. Maryland Extension also describes covering a suspected plant or drain with screen or cheesecloth and checking it over several days.
  5. Correct the source and monitor. Dry persistently wet soil, remove fermenting food and residue, or clean the implicated drain. Continue monitoring to see whether adult activity declines.

What to Do for Each Source

Damp plant soil

Fungus gnats commonly point to houseplant soil that stays moist. Let the soil dry between waterings and avoid leaving standing water in saucers. Yellow sticky cards near the soil can help monitor adults, but they catch adults and do not remove the breeding source. If you confirm fungus gnats in potting soil, a Bti soil drench may be an option only if the product is labeled for indoor plants; follow its label. These recommendations are consistent with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Maryland Extension guidance.

Fermenting food and residue

Remove overripe or damaged produce and clean food or drink residue from bins, containers, and nearby surfaces. Rinse recyclable bottles and cans that have food or drink residue. Traps may catch or temporarily reduce adult fruit flies, but they will not solve the problem if fermenting material remains.

Drain film and damp debris

Drain flies point toward moist organic film or debris, not simply any sink that is in use. Test suspected drains with tape across part of the opening, then clean the implicated drain or trap. Also check nearby damp areas, including wet cracks or condensate pans. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service describes the partial-tape test and source-focused sanitation for indoor flies.

Cleanuper 58 Pack Yellow Sticky Gnat Traps for Plants - Fungus Gnat Killer, Fruit Fly Traps for Indoors, Gnat Sticky Traps for Plants, Family Friendly Design, Sunflower + Butterfly Shapes
  • [Catches Gnats, Fruit Flies, Whiteflies And More] Yellow sticky traps with top-grade adhesive grab fungus gnats, aphids, fruit flies, thrips, and whiteflies on contact from both faces. Place each card at soil level near drainage holes for fastest results. Works for indoor plants and outdoor gardens.
  • [Decorative Shapes That Stay In Your Pots Year-Round] Yellow sunflower and butterfly designs look intentional in any plant display rather than calling out a pest problem. The yellow color attracts insects and decorates at the same time. Leave one trap per pot as a permanent monitoring layer; if a new infestation starts, you will spot insects on the surface before your plants show damage. Two options offer flexibility across pot sizes and styles.
  • [Peels Clean Without Tearing] Start at the bottom and slowly peel one protective film at a time to cleanly reveal the adhesive face. The thicker rigid plastic stake and trap keep the card flat and straight throughout setup so you do not wrestle a floppy surface. No glue on hands, tearing, accidental folding before insertion, or hassle. Three steps: peel, hold, push into soil.
  • [Family Friendly Design & Odorless] The family friendly physical adhesive trap is odorless and leaves no residue on surfaces near your plants. Keep out of direct reach to avoid hair or skin contact with the glue surface.
  • [Works Indoors, Outdoors And In Hanging Baskets] UV-resistant construction holds up under direct sunlight without degrading the adhesive. The pointed plastic stake inserts directly into soil; use the included wire to hang traps near hanging baskets, window herb gardens, or bare-root seedling trays where no soil is available. Two deployment modes, one pack.

Damp, decaying material

Phorid flies can develop in a range of damp, decaying material. Check garbage, drains, plant soil, and damaged disposals. If many flies persist and no accessible source explains them, consider whether concealed plumbing or another hidden unsanitary source needs investigation.

When Traps Help—and When They Do Not

Yellow sticky cards can monitor fungus gnat adults around plants. Other traps may temporarily reduce adult flies, but catching adults alone does not address eggs or larvae at the breeding site. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach cautions that sticky cards do not solve a fungus gnat problem by themselves. Use traps alongside source checks and cleanup, not as a substitute for them.

FAQ

Where are the gnats in my house coming from?

Common sources include damp plant soil, fermenting produce or food residue, organic film in drains, and other damp, decaying material. The flies’ appearance and likely habitat can help narrow the search, but test suspected sources rather than relying on location alone.

How do I find out whether flies are coming from a drain?

Will yellow sticky traps get rid of fungus gnats?

They catch adults and can help monitor activity, but they do not remove the breeding source. Let persistently wet soil dry between waterings and address the conditions supporting the larvae.
