Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor most exterior doors, the “door bolt” to compare is a deadbolt: an auxiliary lock used alongside other door hardware. The best choice depends on how the door is used, how occupants need to exit, and whether the lock fits the door and frame. This guide covers residential exterior-door deadbolts—not bolts for gates, sheds, or interior doors.
Which type of deadbolt is right for your door?
Deadbolts commonly come in single-cylinder, double-cylinder, and electronic versions. Their operating differences matter as much as their security features. Choose for the particular door and its occupants rather than treating the types as interchangeable.
| Type | How it operates | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Single-cylinder | Key outside; thumb turn inside. | Allows straightforward operation from inside. If a door has nearby glass that could provide access to the thumb turn, consider the layout and relevant safety requirements rather than assuming this type suits every door. |
| Double-cylinder | Key required on both sides. | May suit a particular outside-access concern, but occupants need a key to exit. That can delay emergency egress; check applicable local requirements and consider who uses the door. |
| Electronic | Code-based operation. | Can provide everyday access without using a physical key. Features and behavior vary by model, so verify the manufacturer’s instructions for power, backup access, and operation before buying. |
BHMA describes these common deadbolt types and advises choosing hardware appropriate to the door and use. See its locksets and deadbolts guidance and security overview.
How do you know whether a deadbolt will fit?
Measure and identify the door before selecting a model. A lock that does not fit or align can be difficult to operate and may not perform as intended. Use the product instructions for the exact compatibility requirements; do not assume that a standard-looking lock fits every door.

What does certification tell you?
ANSI/BHMA A156.40-2025 is the identified current edition of the Standard for Residential Deadbolts. Its listing says it establishes requirements for residential deadbolts and deadlatches, including durability, security, and finish tests. BHMA’s consumer certification guidance explains that certified hardware is evaluated in those areas. For a specific model, check its current product label or the BHMA directory rather than assuming certification from the brand or product category.
Testing is useful for comparing hardware, but it is not a guarantee that a door cannot be defeated. The ANSI Webstore listing for A156.40-2025 cautions that results in actual use vary with installation, door and frame construction, maintenance, and environmental conditions. ANSI’s door-locking standards information likewise notes that locks can be defeated or bypassed and that no lock alone provides complete security.

Why the door, frame, and strike matter
A deadbolt is only one part of the door assembly. The bolt must align with the strike, and the strike, jamb, and door all affect how the installed hardware works. HUD’s Home Security Book Three: Choosing a Good Lock discusses deadbolt and strike configurations; because it is an older guide, use it alongside current product instructions and the current standard listing.
Do not assume that a longer bolt, aftermarket strike plate, or reinforcement kit by itself makes an entry secure. If the door or frame is damaged, unusual, or difficult to assess, ask a qualified locksmith or security professional to evaluate the complete installation. Any replacement or reinforcement hardware must be compatible with the actual door and frame.

A practical selection checklist
- Identify the exterior door’s use and who must be able to operate it.
- Choose the operating style with egress in mind: key and thumb turn, key on both sides, or a code-based model with verified operating and backup behavior.
- Measure door thickness and backset, and check handing and existing lock preparation against the manufacturer’s requirements.
- Compare current certification or tested-performance information for the exact product; treat it as evidence about the hardware, not a guarantee about the whole entry.
- Inspect the door, frame, and strike condition. Follow installation instructions, and get professional help when fit or condition is uncertain.
