The most consistently recommended companions for garden peas are carrots, radishes, turnips, cucumbers, corn and beans. Virginia Cooperative Extension and West Virginia University Extension both list those six alongside English peas, but the charts are starting points—not proof that a pairing will increase yields or control pests. The best choice for your bed depends on timing, spacing, light and support.

Six companion plants repeatedly listed for peas

Virginia Cooperative Extension’s January 2026 chart and West Virginia University Extension’s chart both list these crops as compatible with English peas. Treat that agreement as a reason to try them, not as a ranking or a promise of better harvests.

Plant Why it may fit What to keep in mind
Carrots Listed as compatible with English peas by both extension charts. Plan for the crops’ different growth rates and root space; chart inclusion does not establish a yield benefit.
Radishes Listed by both charts and can be considered as a short-season crop. Do not assume radishes protect peas from pests; that benefit is not established by the chart listings.
Turnips Listed as compatible by both charts. Allow room for foliage and roots as both crops develop.
Cucumbers Listed by both charts. Consider their shared needs for space, water and light, and keep sprawling growth from crowding peas.
Corn Listed by both charts; WVU Extension also notes that taller crops such as corn can provide natural support for climbing crops. Match the arrangement to the pea variety and avoid letting the taller crop shade peas excessively.
Beans Listed as compatible by both charts. The listing alone does not show that beans measurably improve pea growth or harvest.

For climbing peas, corn may offer a living support structure where spacing and light work. A small trellis or pea netting is another way to support vines; choose a setup suited to the variety and bed rather than relying on a neighboring crop.

Other plants and arrangements to consider cautiously

Beyond the six chart matches, there are useful layouts and possible space-sharing ideas—but the reviewed extension sources do not establish these as proven pea companions. Try them on a small scale and judge them by how they perform in your garden.

Peas around tomato cages

University of Maryland Extension describes sowing early peas at the base of tomato cages on the north side, then planting tomatoes later. In that seasonal arrangement, the pea vines can act as a wind shield. This is a specific timing and placement suggestion, not a general endorsement of tomatoes as a standard companion for peas.

Low-growing greens and cool-season crops

Lettuce and other low-growing greens may share a bed with peas when their timing, light and water needs fit. WVU Extension also discusses interplanting smaller cool-season crops between larger, slower vegetables as a general layout strategy; it does not identify spinach or beets as established pea companions. Treat these combinations as local experiments, and leave enough room to harvest both crops.

Flowers and aromatic herbs

Flowers can provide nectar and pollen for beneficial insects, according to Virginia Cooperative Extension, while Maryland Extension discusses flowering plants near vegetables more generally. Those sources do not show that a particular flower improves pea outcomes. Flowering herbs can be considered for the same broad habitat purpose, but specific herb-and-pea pairings remain experimental rather than chart-backed recommendations.

Squash and pumpkins

Some broader intercropping systems include squash or pumpkins, but neither is listed as an English-pea companion in the reviewed extension charts. Their spreading foliage can take up substantial space and shade neighboring plants, so they are not a default choice for a small pea bed.

What should you avoid planting near peas?

Onions and related plants

Both Virginia Cooperative Extension and WVU Extension list the onion family as incompatible with English peas. Keep onions and other onion-family crops separate if you are following those charts. This is a commonly advised separation, not proof of an absolute biological rule for every garden.

Gladiolus and Irish potatoes

Virginia Cooperative Extension’s chart also lists gladiolus and Irish potato as incompatible with peas; the WVU pea chart does not list either as an avoid. These are single-chart cautions, so they carry less corroboration than the onion-family warning.

How to plan a pea bed around companions

Maryland Extension recommends weighing maturity, above- and below-ground growth, light, nutrient and moisture needs, and planting arrangement. Use those factors to decide whether a companion is likely to fit your actual bed.

  1. Check timing and maturity. Pair early peas with crops that will not crowd them before harvest. The tomato-cage arrangement works by putting peas in early and adding tomatoes later.
  2. Check height and shade. Place taller supports or crops so they do not block needed light. For the Maryland tomato-cage layout, sow peas on the north side.
  3. Check root and canopy space. Leave room for roots to develop and for vines or leaves to spread without smothering neighboring crops.
  4. Compare water and nutrient needs. Choose crops that can share the bed’s conditions without one consistently outcompeting the other.
  5. Choose a support plan. Climbing varieties need something to climb, whether a suitable taller crop such as corn or a separate trellis or netting.

What companion planting can—and cannot—tell you

“Companion planting” can mean several different things: sharing space, providing physical support, arranging crops to manage shade, or creating habitat for beneficial insects. Those are distinct ideas, not a single guarantee that a nearby plant will repel pests or boost pea yields.

Virginia Cooperative Extension discusses physical and ecological mechanisms; Maryland Extension provides planting and layout considerations; WVU Extension cautions that results vary by area. Cornell Cooperative Extension, in material reprinted from Winter 1994 with a PDF footer updated in 2024, warns that much popular companion-planting literature rests on weak science and recommends observing plantings and replicating apparent results. As WVU Extension puts it, “Companion planting is not an exact science, and successful companion plantings can vary in different areas.”

Use the chart-backed six as practical starting points. For other combinations, try a small planting, note the spacing and timing, and compare it with a bed or row without that companion. Do not infer pest protection, useful nitrogen transfer to neighboring peas, or a harvest increase from a pairing unless there is crop-specific evidence for that result.
