The right chainsaw sharpener depends first on your chain—not on a universal “best” pick. Match a file or grinding stone to the chain’s pitch and cutter style, then choose between portable hand filing, powered sharpening in the field, or a bench-mounted grinder. In Outdoor Life’s hands-on comparison by reviewer Drew Conover, the Granberg G106-B File-N-Joint was the overall pick, but the eight options below serve different jobs and skill levels.
How to choose a chainsaw sharpener
Before buying, check the chain manufacturer and model markings or the saw’s manual for chain pitch and cutter style. Oregon’s file catalog and STIHL’s sharpening guide show why file size and guide choice must match the chain. A package that includes a 5/32-inch file, for example, is not automatically suitable for every chain.
- Manual guide: portable, electricity-free, and typically slower than powered grinding; a guide can help control filing angle and height.
- 12V rotary sharpener: powered field sharpening without a bench, but pressure and dwell time require control to avoid removing too much cutter material.
- Bench grinder: a fixed workshop option suited to repeatable, powered sharpening; confirm the grinder model, wheel fit, and setup before purchase.
- Depth gauges: some guides address them while sharpening; others require a separate flat file or depth-gauge tool. Do not overlook this part of chain maintenance.
For safe sharpening, STIHL recommends protective equipment, a cool and switched-off saw, securing the bar in a vise without clamping the chain, and setting the chain brake. Follow the chain’s indicated filing direction: STIHL’s guide cautions, “Never pull back on a sharpening file!”

Manual guides for portability and control
1. Granberg G106-B File-N-Joint: best overall in Outdoor Life’s roundup
Outdoor Life selected the G106-B as its overall pick, citing guided filing, portability, no need for electricity, and adjustments for pitch, angle, and tooth height. Granberg’s product page says the G106B accepts standard file sizes and includes depth-gauge adjustment. The files themselves are sold separately, so add the correctly sized file for your chain.

2. Husqvarna X-Cut SP33G File Kit: a compact, chain-specific kit
Outdoor Life describes this kit’s roller guides as helping position the file and notes that it packs easily and includes files and an integrated depth-gauge guide. The same comparison says its guide fits only its specified chain size. Check the chain itself before choosing the SP33G version; the exact kit’s specifications were not independently confirmed against a Husqvarna product source here.

3. STIHL 2-in-1 Filing Guide: convenient when one guide should handle two jobs
The 2-in-1 guide files cutters with a round file and lowers depth gauges with a flat file. STIHL’s official sharpening guide instructs users to match the file holder to chain pitch, secure the saw, set the chain brake, and file in the marked direction. Buy the version for the pitch of your chain; this is not a one-size-fits-all tool.
4. Oregon Chainsaw Sharpening Kit 104004: a basic portable filing set
Oregon lists a file guide, 5/32-inch round file, flat file, and depth-gauge adjustment tool in its file catalog. Outdoor Life found it useful but judged its guide less effective at keeping the file level than the Husqvarna roller-guide kit. Because this package includes a specific 5/32-inch file, first confirm it matches the chain’s requirements.

5. Oregon bench-mounted Mini Grinder: for a fixed sharpening station
Outdoor Life named its bench-mounted Mini Grinder the best electric option in the roundup, reporting fast removal of damage, consistent results, adjustable angle, and an 85W motor; it also noted that additional wheels may be needed. Oregon’s current catalog lists model 410-120 as a Professional Compact 120-Volt Bench Grinder. The available information does not establish that the roundup’s “Mini Grinder” is the same model, so do not assume the 85W description applies to model 410-120 without checking the exact product identity and manual.
6. Oregon 12V Sure Sharp 575214: portable powered sharpening
Oregon’s product listing specifies 25,000 RPM for the 575214 and includes an auto adapter, battery clips, and 5/32-, 3/16-, and 7/32-inch stones. Its stated compatibility covers round-ground 1/4-, 3/8-inch low-profile, .325-, 3/8-, and .404-inch chain. Select the stone that matches the chain and follow the tool instructions. Outdoor Life warns that pressing too hard or grinding too long can remove too much material; a powered rotary sharpener needs a steady hand.

7. EzzDoo Electric Chainsaw Sharpener: a guided rotary tool with a depth-gauge catch
Outdoor Life reports that the EzzDoo includes angle markings and bits, but no provision for setting depth gauges. The reviewer’s advice is to use a separate flat file for depth-gauge maintenance and to keep a steady hand while sharpening. These are the roundup author’s observations, not independently confirmed product specifications; check the package and instructions for the exact version you are considering.
8. Dremel 1453 Sharpening Kit: an attachment, not a standalone sharpener
Outdoor Life describes the 1453 kit as including sharpening stones, spacers, and a depth-gauge guide. Its comparison reports the stones wore faster than diamond bits. Confirm that the attachment is compatible with your particular Dremel tool; the roundup excludes Micro, Stylo, and Fortiflex models.

What Outdoor Life’s comparison does—and does not—show
Reviewer Drew Conover says he gathered dulled chains used for firewood and property maintenance, covering several chain sizes and styles. He followed each tool’s instructions and assessed ease of use, setup time, sharpening time, consistency, and versatility. Outdoor Life reports that all but one tool produced good edges in that comparison. This is one publication’s hands-on assessment, not a guarantee for every chain or operator, and it does not establish long-term durability.
Quick Recap
Before you buy
- Identify chain pitch and cutter style from the chain markings or saw manual; match the guide, file, or stone accordingly.
- Decide where sharpening will happen: a hand guide for portability, a 12V tool for powered field use, or a bench grinder for a fixed workshop.
- Check whether the chosen tool handles depth gauges or whether you need a separate flat file and gauge tool.
- Verify the exact model, included accessories, compatible saw or rotary tool, current stock, and current price with the seller. The cited comparison’s prices are time-specific, not current quotes.
- For powered sharpeners, use the correct stone, follow the model’s manual, and avoid excessive pressure or grinding time.
