In the United States, Alexa+ costs $19.99 per month for non-Prime customers. Eligible Prime members receive the full Alexa+ experience at no additional charge, while non-Prime users can try a limited version through Alexa.com and the Alexa mobile app. Prime itself is still a paid membership, and device compatibility varies by Echo model, account and region.
Amazon announced general U.S. availability for Alexa+ on February 4, 2026. The service is a generative-AI successor to traditional Alexa, designed to maintain conversational context and carry out multi-step tasks instead of responding only to isolated commands.
The practical choice is therefore not simply “$19.99 or free.” It is: included with a Prime membership, $19.99 per month for the full standalone plan, or a limited free tier for trying the service on the web and in the app.

What Alexa+ adds to regular Alexa
Amazon positions Alexa+ as an assistant that can “get things done.” Its announced capabilities include:
- Natural follow-up questions with context retained across a conversation.
- Personalized answers based on preferences and previous interactions.
- Research, trip planning, checklists, invitations, event planning and recipes.
- Smart-home control and creation of routines using ordinary language.
- Shopping assistance and, in some cases, purchases using the customer’s default Amazon payment and shipping settings.
- Continuation between compatible Echo devices, the Alexa app, Alexa.com, Fire TV and other supported endpoints.
- Selected integrations involving services such as Ring and compatible Bose devices.
These are Amazon-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature works on every device. Hardware generation, software version, account permissions, third-party service and region can all matter. Action-oriented features should be reviewed before they send a message, change a calendar, place an order or alter a smart-home setting.

Alexa+ pricing in the U.S.

“Free with Prime” means Amazon does not add a separate $19.99 Alexa+ fee to an eligible Prime account. It does not mean Prime is free. Amazon’s February 2026 forum announcement listed Prime at $14.99 per month, but membership prices, taxes, annual plans and eligibility can change; confirm the live amount at Amazon’s Prime page before subscribing.

The Standard announcement also lists 1 TB of photo storage. Prime members separately receive Amazon Photos benefits through their Prime membership, so do not assume every storage term is identical for every account type.
What Prime unlocks
Full access rather than a preview
Amazon says eligible Prime members receive unlimited access to the full Alexa+ experience rather than only the limited free chat tier.

Household availability
The Prime benefit is described as covering the household associated with the membership. Household sharing is not the same as unlimited access for every possible account configuration: adult profiles, child profiles and device registration can affect what appears on a particular device.
Multiple platforms
The benefit is not restricted to one Echo speaker. Amazon describes access across compatible Alexa-enabled devices, the Alexa app and Alexa.com, with support also referenced for Fire TV and other compatible endpoints. A feature can still be available on one platform but absent on a specific Echo model.
How to activate Alexa+ as a Prime member
- Sign in to the Amazon account that actually holds the Prime membership.
- Use a compatible Alexa device, the Alexa app or Alexa.com.
- On an Alexa-enabled device, say “Alexa, upgrade to Alexa+.”
- Alternatively, sign in at Alexa.com and follow the account prompts.
- Check the confirmation screen and account subscription page to ensure the plan is shown as included with Prime, not a standalone $19.99 subscription.
This account check is especially important if Prime and the Alexa devices are registered to different Amazon accounts, or if a trial has already been started.
What non-Prime users can do for free
Amazon offers a limited Alexa+ experience through Alexa.com and the Alexa mobile app. It is useful for testing conversational AI without buying an Echo or joining Prime, but Amazon does not describe it as equivalent to the full Prime or Standard plan.
- Browser and app access may work without an Echo.
- Device access, household features and other capabilities may be restricted.
- Amazon has not published a complete usage-cap schedule in the cited announcement, so do not rely on an assumed daily, message or token limit.
- Full device-wide access requires either eligible Prime status or the $19.99 Standard plan.

Which devices support Alexa+?
Amazon’s rollout emphasized newer Echo Show devices, including the Echo Show 8, 10, 15 and 21. Current product material describes Alexa+ across Alexa-enabled devices, browsers and the app, but individual features can depend on hardware.

Amazon has identified the following older products as continuing to use traditional Alexa rather than receiving the complete Alexa+ experience:
- Echo Dot (first generation)
- Echo (first generation)
- Echo Plus (first generation)
- Amazon Tap
- Echo Show (first generation)
- Echo Show (second generation)
- Echo Spot (first generation)
This is a compatibility warning, not a complete current device database. Check the device-specific Amazon or Alexa support page before buying discounted or used hardware. Amazon has also announced Alexa+ support on selected Bose devices; the exact model and setup still matter. Availability outside the United States
The $19.99 figure and Prime inclusion described here are U.S. terms. Amazon has announced availability in Canada and international early-access or rollout markets, but prices, taxes, languages, Prime eligibility and device support differ.
For example, Amazon’s international announcement lists C$27.99 per month plus tax for non-Prime customers in Canada, with no additional Alexa+ charge for Canadian Prime members. Do not apply U.S. pricing to another country. See Amazon’s international availability announcement.

Alexa+ is included only while the account remains eligible for the Prime benefit. Amazon’s cited materials do not fully document every cancellation, pause, household or Prime-trial scenario, so do not assume a universal transition rule.
When Prime eligibility ends, the practical possibilities are to use the limited free tier, subscribe to the $19.99 Standard plan or continue with traditional Alexa where that remains supported. Before the next billing event, check the account’s Alexa+ and Prime status. Prime cancellation should not be treated as proof that Amazon will automatically start charging $19.99; the published material does not establish that outcome.

If you deliberately enroll in a paid trial or Standard subscription, review Your Memberships and Subscriptions. Amazon’s general terms say paid Alexa subscriptions can auto-renew unless canceled. The terms are at Amazon’s subscription terms.
Is Alexa+ replacing traditional Alexa?
Alexa+ is a new AI experience layered onto or replacing parts of the older interface, not a new hardware line. Amazon says users can continue using Alexa without engaging with Alexa+ features, although exact opt-out controls and behavior can vary by current app version and device.
Do not assume that every existing routine, skill, integration or voice response behaves identically after an upgrade. Verify important routines and controls on the specific account and hardware you use.

Alexa+ is designed to remember context, personalize responses and act on a user’s behalf. That convenience can involve voice recordings, interaction history, stored preferences and access to linked calendars, shopping, smart-home, Ring or third-party accounts.
- Review Amazon’s privacy dashboard and account permissions before enabling linked services.
- Check default payment and shipping settings before allowing shopping actions.
- Require confirmation for purchases, bookings, communications and consequential smart-home changes.
- Use separate household profiles where appropriate, and remember that shared devices can expose context to other users.
- Treat generative-AI answers as fallible, particularly when an action has financial, safety or scheduling consequences.
Amazon describes privacy and security controls in its Alexa AI announcement. Developers are also required to provide confirmation and cancellation safeguards for certain purchases and bookings under Amazon’s Alexa+ policy requirements.
Who should pay for Alexa+?
Existing Prime households
Alexa+ is easiest to justify when you already pay for Prime and own several compatible Echo or Fire TV devices. The additional Alexa+ charge is zero, and planning, follow-up conversations, routines and Amazon-connected actions can add value to an established household setup.

Non-Prime Echo owners
Try the limited web or app tier first. The Standard plan costs $19.99 monthly, or approximately $239.88 per year before tax, so it makes sense only if full device access and Amazon ecosystem features are worth that recurring cost.
Basic Alexa users
If you mainly use timers, alarms, music, weather and simple smart-home commands, traditional Alexa may already meet your needs. Alexa+ is not required for those basic functions.
Heavy Amazon, Ring or smart-home users
Alexa+ is more distinctive when you want voice-based planning, natural-language routines, Amazon shopping or compatible Ring and smart-home integrations. Ring-related features may require a Ring Home Premium subscription; Alexa+ does not include that subscription.
Privacy-sensitive users
If retaining preferences or linking calendars, purchases and devices is uncomfortable, stay with basic Alexa or test only the limited tier until you understand the controls.

For U.S. Prime members, Alexa+ is a meaningful included benefit: the full experience carries no separate $19.99 monthly charge while Prime eligibility continues. Non-Prime users can either pay $19.99 per month for full access or test a limited web and app tier for free. Because device support and cancellation behavior are not uniform, verify the account and hardware before subscribing—and do not buy Prime solely for Alexa+ unless the rest of Prime’s benefits justify the membership.
