Portable propane suits flexible seating, fixed natural gas can suit a permanent layout with an adequate gas supply, and electric infrared is an option when an outdoor-rated model fits the mounting and electrical conditions.
Before buying, check the specific heater’s certification, installation manual, clearances, mounting requirements, and approved fuel configuration. Output ratings and manufacturer coverage guidance are useful for comparing models, but they do not guarantee comfort over a particular area.
Compare Patio Heater Types
| Type | May suit | Key checks and tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Portable propane | Flexible seating layouts or locations where the heat source may need to move | Tank changes or refills, stable placement, ventilation, wind exposure, model-specific clearances, and approved fuel configuration |
| Fixed natural gas | Permanent patio layouts with a suitable gas supply | Gas supply capacity for all connected appliances, installation requirements, clearances, and the exact appliance’s approved configuration |
| Electric infrared | Locations where an outdoor-rated heater’s listed mounting and electrical conditions can be met | Electrical supply, outdoor suitability, mounting height and angle, clearances, and model-specific performance information |
The available evidence does not establish a universal winner by price, operating cost, output-to-coverage, or comfort. Compare candidates for your site rather than assuming one fuel type is always cheaper or more effective.
Choose for the Patio and Seating Layout
Start by identifying where people will sit and whether the heat source needs to be portable or permanently installed. Consider wind exposure, open sides, ceiling height, mounting options, nearby materials, ventilation, and the fuel or electrical supply available. A BTU input rating alone cannot tell you how much of an outdoor area will feel comfortable.

Manufacturer guidance is model-specific. For example, Sunpak publishes different clearance information by model and mounting angle. Its recommendations—including mounting-height guidance—apply to its products, not to every patio heater. Detroit Radiant’s coverage notes likewise depend on stated conditions, including no wind, and warn that actual site conditions may vary.
Examples of Documented Models
The following are examples with manufacturer-published specifications, not tested recommendations or overall winners. Confirm the current product documentation before purchase or installation.
| Example | Published details | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Sunglo A270 portable propane heater | Manufacturer lists 40,000 BTU/hr, a standard 20 lb cylinder, portable mounting, and pilot/thermocouple shutoff | Placement and installation instructions, clearances, ventilation, and that the unit’s approved fuel configuration suits your site |
| Sunglo A242 free-standing natural-gas heater | Manufacturer lists 50,000 BTU/hr and nominal 12 ft spacing | Full installation instructions, placement and clearance requirements, and gas-system capacity |
| Sunpak models | Manufacturer publishes clearances that vary by model and mounting angle | The exact model’s installation table; do not apply its values to unrelated heaters |
Propane or Natural Gas?
Propane can be useful when you want a portable heater and flexible placement. The documented Sunglo A270, for example, is designed for a standard 20 lb cylinder. A fixed natural-gas heater may suit a permanent patio layout where a suitable gas supply is available; the Sunglo A242 is one manufacturer-documented example.
Do not assume propane and natural-gas models are interchangeable. Verify the exact appliance’s approved fuel and configuration. For a fixed gas appliance, have the gas supply assessed for all appliances it serves and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and local requirements.
Electric Infrared: Check the Exact Installation
Electric infrared may be worth considering when an outdoor-rated model can be installed in the intended location and the electrical supply meets its requirements. Check the model’s listing, mounting instructions, clearances, and electrical conditions before choosing it.

The research reviewed for this guide does not establish a current electric-model ranking, a comparable output-to-coverage comparison, or a reliable operating-cost comparison against gas heaters. Avoid choosing on a claim that electric is universally cheaper or more effective.
Safety, Clearances, and Standards
Use the exact manufacturer’s manual for clearances, mounting angle and height, ventilation, and fuel connection. Do not transfer clearance figures from one model to another. Sunpak advises that its heaters need suitable combustion-air and exhaust ventilation and says not to locate its heater in a ceiling recess or soffit; follow the applicable instructions for the model you select.
Keep the heater in a stable location with suitable clearance from obstructions, and supervise children and pets around it. The CPSC research reviewed for this guide discusses these as safety considerations; it is qualitative research, not a population estimate.
CSA/ANSI Z83.26-20 (R2025)/CSA 2.37-20 (R2025) is the revision shown in the ANSI Webstore listing reviewed for this guide. Its scope covers newly produced gas-fired outdoor infrared patio heaters for natural gas or propane. A standards listing does not prove that a particular product is certified or appropriate for a particular installation. Verify the specific product’s current certification and local requirements.
Steps Before You Buy or Install
- Define the heated zone. Mark the intended seating area and note wind exposure, open sides, and obstacles.
- Choose the supply and installation type. Decide whether portability, fixed gas piping, or an outdoor-rated electric installation fits the site.
- Shortlist exact models. Compare approved fuel or electrical supply, certification, controls and safety shutoff, warranty, and service information.
- Check the manual against the site. Confirm clearances, ventilation, mounting requirements, and placement before purchasing.
- Verify installation requirements. Check local rules and arrange qualified installation where needed, particularly for fixed gas or electrical work.
FAQ
Which patio heater should you choose?
Choose according to the site and installation: portable propane for flexibility, fixed natural gas where the gas supply and installation suit a permanent layout, or electric infrared where an outdoor-rated model’s listed electrical and mounting conditions can be met. No single type is best for every patio.

How many BTUs do you need for an outdoor patio heater?
Use the input rating as one comparison point, not a guarantee of coverage. Wind, open sides, ceiling height, mounting, and placement affect results. Consult the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance for the intended seating area.
Can I use a propane heater where a natural-gas heater is specified?
Do not assume the fuels are interchangeable. Verify the exact appliance’s approved fuel and configuration in its documentation.

Can a patio heater go under a covered patio or pergola?
Only if the exact model’s instructions and applicable local requirements allow that installation. Check clearances, mounting, and ventilation against the actual beams, ceiling, and nearby materials.
Is electric infrared cheaper to run than gas?
The research available for this guide does not support a current, comparable operating-cost calculation across electric, propane, and natural gas. Costs depend on local rates and the exact equipment; compare them only with current local prices and model data.
When should I use a qualified installer?
Use a qualified installer when the product or local requirements call for professional work, particularly for fixed gas piping or electrical installation. Confirm the installer follows the appliance manual and local requirements.
