The best fence-line landscaping fits the available space, local growing conditions, and the amount of upkeep you want. Choose plants for their mature size, light and drainage needs, and climate suitability; a diverse, layered mix can provide screening and seasonal interest while avoiding the risks of a single-species row.

Before planting, assess the fence, measure the bed, check for utilities, and plan how you will water and maintain the planting as it establishes. There is no universal plant list or spacing plan: local extension and native-plant resources can help you choose species suited to your site.

Start with the fence line and site

Inspect the fence and note any drainage or repair concerns before adding a bed. Measure the usable planting depth and sketch existing trees, paths, gates, utilities, and areas where you need access. Leave room for plants to reach their mature size rather than planning around the dimensions of nursery pots.

Before digging, contact your local utility-locating service. Also check local requirements and property responsibilities if the fence is shared or the work may affect a boundary. Consider sunlight, soil, wet or dry conditions, access to water, deer pressure, and how much time you want to spend pruning and weeding.

Compare fence-line landscaping approaches

Approach Space and screening Good fit Plan for
Mixed privacy screen Needs room for the mature height and width of layered trees and shrubs Privacy, seasonal variation, and a diverse planting Local climate, light, drainage, water, and maintenance needs
Narrow ornamental border Works in a measured, shallow bed when plant sizes suit the available width Flowers, grasses, herbs, or a combination of plants and hardscape Sun, water access, mature growth, and desired upkeep
Hedgerow or living boundary Can take more space when planted in multiple rows A boundary with privacy and habitat value Choose diverse, locally suitable, non-invasive species

Design a mixed privacy screen

A mixed screen combines several kinds of plants for coverage and seasonal variation. Arrange taller trees or shrubs as a backdrop, with medium-height plants in front or between them and lower plants, ornamental grasses, or groundcovers around the edge. Because the plants are not all the same species, a problem affecting one kind is less likely to affect the entire screen.

Choose plants according to their mature size, local climate range, sunlight, soil, drainage, water needs, and wildlife tolerance. Regional plant lists are examples, not universal prescriptions. Check local native-plant and invasive-species guidance before buying.

Plan a narrow ornamental border

For a shallow bed, begin with a measured sketch and select plants for the actual width, sun, and watering access. A border can emphasize perennials, grasses, herbs, or other locally suitable plants, or combine planting with a hardscape accent. Avoid crowding plants against the fence or choosing species that will quickly outgrow the bed.

Ornamental grasses can add texture and seasonal interest, but what performs well depends on the region and site. In dry climates, locally appropriate water-wise planting can reduce watering needs after establishment; confirm recommendations with local resources.

Consider a hedgerow or living boundary

A hedgerow uses trees, shrubs, and lower plants to mark an edge, add screening, and provide habitat. Evaluate your goals and site before choosing species, including mature size, hardiness, sun, soil, drainage, water needs, wildlife tolerance, and maintenance. A multi-row hedgerow can require more room than a typical residential fence bed, so do not assume farm-scale layouts will fit a suburban yard.

Choose plants with deer pressure in mind

“Deer-resistant” does not mean deer-proof. Browsing depends on local deer pressure and available food, and young plants may be vulnerable. If deer are a concern, use physical exclusion or individual plant protection where appropriate; plant labels alone cannot guarantee protection. Iowa State University Extension describes fencing as the most effective approach, while noting that barriers differ in height and maintenance.

Establish and maintain the planting

  1. Test the soil. Use a soil test to guide any needed soil amendments rather than guessing.
  2. Prepare before digging. Contact the utility-locating service, then prepare the bed and plant at an appropriate depth. Follow sound planting practices for trees and shrubs, including addressing circling roots as recommended in planting guidance.
  3. Water during establishment. Provide supplemental water as needed for the species and local conditions. Drip irrigation is one option; plan for access to water before planting.
  4. Control weeds while plants establish. Check the bed regularly and keep weeds from competing with young plants.
  5. Apply mulch carefully. University of Maryland Extension advises a mulch layer no more than 2–3 inches deep. Keep mulch away from trunks and do not pile it against fence boards or posts.
  6. Reassess as plants grow. Prune or adjust care as needed, and make sure mature growth does not block access to the fence.

  • Pro Tips for Best Results: For a perfectly straight installation, we recommend unrolling and letting the edging relax in the sun for a few hours to ease the shipping coil memory. In very hard or rocky soil, creating a pilot hole with a screwdriver makes staking much easier. For most applications, securing a stake every 4-5 holes provides ample hold. Following these simple steps ensures a smooth, professional-looking finish.

Are deer-resistant plants deer-proof?

No. Browsing depends on deer pressure and food availability, and young plants can be vulnerable. Physical barriers or individual plant protection are more dependable than relying only on plant labels.

How deep should mulch be in a fence-line bed?

University of Maryland Extension advises keeping mulch no more than 2–3 inches deep. Keep it away from plant trunks and avoid piling it against fence boards or posts.

When should I water new fence-line plants?

Water during establishment as needed for the species, weather, soil, and local conditions. Oregon State University Extension discusses supplemental irrigation during the first few years of hedgerow establishment, but the schedule depends on the site and should not be treated as a universal prescription.
