For everyday splashes, wipe your microwave with a soft cloth or sponge dampened with warm water. For dried-on food, heat water in an uncovered microwave-safe bowl to loosen the residue with steam, let the bowl cool, then wipe the interior. Use mild dish soap for heavier grime, and check your microwave’s manual for model-specific precautions.
What you need
- A microwave-safe glass bowl or measuring cup and water
- A soft cloth or non-scratch sponge
- Mild dish soap for heavier soil
- A dry cloth for finishing
Plain water is enough for the steam method. Some manufacturer instructions also suggest lemon juice or vinegar, but neither is required. Follow your microwave’s manual rather than assuming one additive is right for every model.
How to clean the microwave
-
Turn it off and check the manual
Let the microwave cool. Read the use and care instructions for cleaning and electrical precautions; some manufacturers recommend unplugging the appliance first. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service advises: “Consult the manufacturer’s use and care manual for the best advice for your model of microwave oven.”
-
Remove the turntable parts if permitted
Take out the glass turntable and support ring only if your manual allows it. Let hot components cool before handling, and wash the removable parts separately according to the manual. Dry them before putting them back.

Loosen dried-on splatters with steam
Pour water into an uncovered microwave-safe glass bowl or measuring cup and heat it using the settings and timing in your manual. Maytag describes heating water for 3 to 5 minutes in its own cleaning procedure; that timing is not universal. Let the container cool before removing it carefully, since both the container and steam can be hot.
-
Wipe the interior and door
Use a soft damp cloth or sponge to wipe the cavity, door, and accessible surfaces. For stubborn grime, use mild dish soap diluted in water, then wipe again with clean water and dry. Wipe gently around the inlet or waveguide cover if it is soiled; do not scrub it aggressively.

Choose the method that matches the mess
| Situation | Method | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh splashes or light soil | Wipe with a soft cloth or sponge and warm water. | USDA FSIS recommends a soft cloth for cleaning guidance. |
| Dried-on food | Heat water in an uncovered microwave-safe container, let it cool, then wipe. | Use your model’s settings and timing; Maytag’s 3-to-5-minute example applies to its procedure, not every microwave. |
| Heavier grime | Use mild dish soap diluted in water, then wipe with clean water and dry. | Keep liquid away from controls and follow the manual. |
| Odor or residue | Check your manufacturer’s instructions for an approved method; some mention lemon juice, vinegar, or baking soda. | These are alternatives in cited guidance, not a reason to combine vinegar and baking soda. |
What to avoid
- Abrasive cleaners, steel wool, abrasive pads, and sharp tools can damage surfaces.
- Do not use excess water or spray cleaner directly onto controls. Samsung cautions against cleaning sprays, large amounts of soap and water, abrasives, and sharp objects on the panel.
- Do not neglect the inlet or waveguide cover. Whirlpool’s older, model-specific manual warns that soil buildup there can contribute to arcing and damage; follow your own manual’s guidance and wipe the cover gently if soiled.
- Do not assume a steam-clean feature or a particular timing is available on every model. Whirlpool’s steam-clean setting is model-specific; use it only if your appliance’s instructions provide it.
How often should you clean it?
Clean spills promptly and otherwise base cleaning on how often the microwave is used and its care instructions. Cleaning expert Sabrina Fierman of New York’s Little Elves recommended weekly cleaning in a Homes & Gardens article published December 24, 2022. That is an attributed professional recommendation, not a universal manufacturer requirement.
