A dowel chamfering jig holds a round dowel at a controlled angle while you sand or cut a small bevel around its end. Choose a disc-sander jig if you want an adjustable guide, a table-saw sled jig for repeated batches, or a compact V-groove jig for sanding small parts. These designs make a flat chamfer—not a fully rounded or bull-nosed end.
What a chamfering jig does
The jig guides a dowel against a sanding or cutting surface so repeated ends can receive a more consistent chamfer. A chamfer is a flat bevel around the end; it differs from rounding, which produces a curved profile.
Chamfered dowels can be easier to insert for alignment. WOOD Magazine also notes that the bevel creates glue space in dowel joints. See WOOD Magazine’s Dowel Chamfering Jig (February 1, 2017).

| Design | Workholding and adjustment | Equipment | Best-supported distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjustable guides | The dowel slides along a fixed guide; a movable guide sets the opening. | Disc sander | Moving the guide adjusts the chamfer size. Design details: WOOD Magazine. |
| Drilled block with entry slots | A dowel turns in a size-matched hole; blade height sets the chamfer. | Table saw and crosscut sled | Described for repeated chamfers on handles and drawbore pins. See Fine Woodworking. |
| V-groove and stop | The groove locates the dowel; a stop controls its position as you rotate it. | Sander | A compact approach for small parts. See Woodsmith. |
Adjustable disc-sander jig
WOOD Magazine’s design uses a plywood base with two 45-degree guides. One guide stays fixed; the other moves to widen or narrow the opening, changing the chamfer size. The plan specifies a 1/4-inch plywood base and 3/4-inch plywood guides. The fixed guide is screwed in place, and the movable guide is secured with double-faced tape.

Table-saw sled jig for batches
Fine Woodworking describes a jig made from a straight, square block about 2 by 3 by 15 inches, drilled with holes for the dowel sizes and cut with entry slots. It is used on a clamped crosscut sled. The dowel turns in its hole while the jig is positioned at the blade; blade height sets the chamfer. The author presents it for batches of dowel handles and pins used in drawbored mortise-and-tenon joints.

- Quickly and accurately dowel corner, edge, and surface joints
- Durable hardened steel bushings create straight, precise holes
- Versatile- use on boards from 1/2 in. to 1-1/2 in. thick (12 mm to 38 mm)
- Steel depth stops for each bit ensure proper drilling depth and reduces errors
- Steel dowel centers accurately mark the center of your drilling location when manually aligning dowel holes
This approach is suited to repeat work when a table saw and crosscut sled are already part of the setup. The article describes a design, not a universal jig or a measured comparison with sanding methods.
V-groove jig for sanding small parts
Woodsmith’s smaller design uses a V-groove to cradle the dowel and a stop to set its position. Clamp the base, place the dowel in the groove, and rotate its end against a sander until the bevel runs around the end. The groove locates the round stock while the stop helps keep the workpiece in position.

Setup and safety
The cited plans give design-specific setup details rather than complete machine-safety instructions. Follow the manuals for your sander, saw, and sled, and secure the jig as directed. In particular, the disc-sander design calls for clamping the jig to the table and keeping it close to, but clear of, the disc. For the table-saw method, use the clamped sled and jig described in its plan; do not treat this summary as a substitute for the saw manufacturer’s operating instructions.
- Match the jig’s hole, groove, or guide opening to the dowel so it is controlled rather than loose.
- Keep hands and the workpiece clear of the machine’s cutting or sanding path, following the machine manual and the jig’s complete instructions.
- Test the setup on scrap before processing a batch, and check that the bevel is the size and shape your joint needs.
Which design should you use?
- Choose adjustable guides if you have a disc sander and want a guide whose opening changes the chamfer size.
- Choose the drilled-block design if you are making repeated chamfers and have a table saw with a crosscut sled.
- Choose the V-groove design for a compact sanding setup that locates small round parts with a groove and stop.
The cited sources document these approaches but do not establish one best design for every shop or a performance ranking among them.
