The best dorm setup starts with the room you’re actually moving into: confirm the bed size, check what furniture and appliances are provided, and read your housing rules before buying. Then prioritize bedding, storage, study supplies, bathroom and laundry basics, and a few personal touches. There’s no special gear list for guys; choose items that fit your room, routines, and style.
What should you bring for your dorm room?
Use this checklist as a starting point, not a shopping mandate. Official university lists cover the essentials, but room layouts and policies vary. Check your assigned building’s inventory and housing guidance, and coordinate shared items with your roommate before buying duplicates.
- Sleep: fitted sheets and pillowcases in the correct size, pillows, a comforter or blanket, and a mattress protector. Add a topper only if it fits the bed and meets any housing requirements.
- Storage: under-bed bins, closet organizers, stackable drawers, or desk organizers, selected after checking dimensions and what the room already provides.
- Study: a planner or whiteboard, headphones or earplugs, and a desk lamp or other accessories that campus rules permit.
- Bathroom and laundry: towels, toiletries, shower shoes, a robe, and a shower caddy if you’ll use a communal bathroom; bring a laundry bag or hamper if you’ll travel to shared machines.
- Cleaning: basic supplies if they are not provided or available through your housing community.
- Personal touches: photos, posters, a rug, or other decor that fits the space and can be installed without violating housing rules.
UC’s housing guide, for example, lists bedding, storage, study supplies, and personal items; Columbia recommends a laundry bag or basket. Those are campus-specific examples, not a universal packing list. UC housing guide · Columbia housing guidance
How do you choose bedding that fits?
Confirm the bed dimensions for your assigned hall before ordering sheets or a mattress topper. Twin XL is common at some universities, but it is not guaranteed: UC says most of its residence hall beds are Twin XL while some are full-size, and Columbia specifies extra-long twin bedding for its own housing.

A basic bedding setup usually means fitted sheets, pillowcases, pillows, a comforter or blanket, and a mattress protector. A topper is optional; check the housing policy before buying one. Columbia says its toppers must meet CAL 117 requirements. Neither bed size nor topper guidance should be treated as nationwide policy. UC housing guide · Columbia housing guidance
What furniture and appliances will the room already have?
Check the inventory for your specific residence hall before purchasing large or bulky items. UC says its communities are furnished and that most include a microwave/refrigerator combination. Columbia says rooms have basic furnishings, requires provided furniture to remain in the room, and prohibits students from bringing a mattress. Other campuses and halls may differ.

Use the room inventory to decide what is genuinely missing. If storage is limited, under-bed bins, stackable drawers, and closet organizers may help—but first check the bed clearance, room layout, and measurements. Which study and electrical items are useful—and allowed?
A planner or whiteboard can help keep track of assignments. Headphones or earplugs may be useful when roommates keep different schedules. A desk lamp can add focused light, but confirm which kinds are allowed before buying one. UC suggests adjustable desk lighting and headphones, and mentions a surge protector with USB ports; that does not mean every campus approves every lamp or power accessory.

Read your current housing rules for electrical devices, extension cords, and power strips. UT Austin specifies UL-listed indoor extension cords or power strips with a built-in circuit breaker and restricts certain devices and decorative lights. Follow the policy for your own campus rather than assuming that a product allowed elsewhere is permitted in your room. UC housing guide · UT Austin housing rules
What bathroom and laundry gear do you need?
Match these items to the bathroom arrangement and laundry setup in your residence hall. A shower caddy is most useful when you carry toiletries to a communal bathroom; shower shoes, quick-dry towels, and a robe can also make that routine easier. For a private bathroom, you may not need a portable caddy.

Policies differ. UC lists posters and damage-free adhesive hooks; UT Austin allows removable adhesive but prohibits tape, tacks, and nails on walls, and restricts several kinds of decorative lighting. Check whether rugs or other decor are allowed, and use only mounting methods your housing office approves. UT Austin housing rules · UC community guidance
Should you bring kitchen appliances or cleaning equipment?
Do not buy a refrigerator, microwave, or cooking appliance until you know what the room provides and what housing permits. UC says most communities include a microwave/refrigerator combination and also lists restrictions on several cooking appliances and refrigerators. UT Austin says it provides microwaves and refrigerators and prohibits appliances with open heating coils. These policies apply to their own housing; check the rules for your assigned residence hall.
Also look for local services before packing bulky cleaning equipment. UC notes that some campus communities have free rental lockers with vacuums and cleaning supplies. Availability depends on the community. UC housing guide · UT Austin housing rules · UC community guidance
How should you decide what to buy first?
Use these checks to keep the setup practical and avoid unnecessary purchases:
- Confirm fit: verify bed size, storage dimensions, under-bed clearance, and available floor space.
- Check what is supplied: look up furniture and appliances for your specific building and room type.
- Read housing rules: verify current restrictions on lighting, electrical accessories, adhesives, appliances, furniture, and fire safety.
- Match your routine: account for a private or communal bathroom, shared laundry, and any shared kitchen access.
- Coordinate with your roommate: agree on shared items such as a rug, seating, a TV, or cleaning supplies before either of you buys them.
- Think about move-in: consider how easily an item can be carried into the building, cleaned, stored, or taken home later.
