A low-profile under-cabinet range hood can preserve space above the cooktop, but “low profile” is a shape description—not a guarantee of strong airflow, shallow depth, or a particular venting setup. Choose by checking the exact hood dimensions against your cabinetry, confirming whether it vents outdoors or recirculates, and comparing the manufacturer-listed airflow for the specific configuration.
What “low profile” means when choosing a range hood
There is no single performance standard implied by “low profile.” Manufacturer examples range from a 5.5-inch-high Midea hood rated at 100 CFM to Elica’s 5-inch Fusaro, listed at 190 CFM. Those figures are model specifications, not results from an independent head-to-head test, and they do not establish how a hood will perform once installed in a particular kitchen.
Start with the space available beneath the cabinet and above the cooking surface. Compare width, height, and depth, then check the installation diagram and the requirements for your cooktop or range. Product-page dimensions alone do not establish the clearances required for every appliance or local jurisdiction.
Compare specific low-profile hood options
| Model | Manufacturer-listed details | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Midea MVU30W4AST | 29.9 inches wide, 5.5 inches high, 100 CFM, three speeds, reusable aluminum filters; ducted or recirculating installation is listed by Midea. | Confirm the installation mode and any parts required for your kitchen. The modest listed airflow may suit a different need than a higher-rated configuration. Midea product page |
| Elica Fusaro | 30 inches wide, 5 inches high, 190 CFM, dishwasher-safe mesh filter. | Elica’s page gives conflicting venting descriptions: introductory copy refers to ducted or recirculating options, while its technical table says “Ducted Only.” Verify the exact model’s manual or ask Elica before choosing it for recirculation. Elica product page |
| Elica Aria | The family has multiple configurations. Listed examples include a 30-by-20-by-4 11/16-inch configuration and a 30-by-18 5/8-by-5-inch configuration; listed airflow figures vary, including 280 or 400 CFM. | Do not treat the family as one set of dimensions or specifications. Confirm the precise model number, dimensions, airflow, venting mode, and installation diagram. Elica product page |
| Zephyr Gust II | Zephyr describes it as a low-profile under-cabinet hood and provides specifications and manual access. | Use the current documentation for the exact model to verify dimensions and features before comparing it with other candidates. Zephyr product page |
| Summit HRTX24BPTC | A 24-inch ductless retractable under-cabinet hood positioned for compact kitchens. | It is described as ductless, so do not assume it exhausts air outdoors. Confirm the current product documentation and filter requirements. Summit product page |
| Elica Allasio | 4 3/4 inches high, available in 30- or 36-inch widths; Elica lists ducted installation and a recirculation-kit option. | Verify the chosen width and whether the recirculation kit is needed and included or sold separately. Elica product page |
Choose the right venting arrangement
Ducted to the outdoors
A ducted hood carries cooking air outside through ductwork. Confirm that your kitchen has a suitable route and that the hood’s outlet and installation requirements match it. A product described as convertible may support more than one arrangement, but verify the exact model and whether a separate kit or transition is required.

Recirculating or ductless
A recirculating setup returns filtered air to the room rather than exhausting it outdoors. Check which filters or conversion kit it needs, whether they are included, and how they must be maintained. Do not infer that a hood is convertible from its slim shape or family name; Summit’s cited HRTX24BPTC, for example, is described as ductless, while the Fusaro page has inconsistent venting information.

Check the details that affect fit and upkeep
- Cabinet and cooktop fit: Measure the available width, height, and depth, and compare them with the exact model’s installation diagram. Check the manual and applicable local requirements for clearances; the product dimensions do not specify every kitchen’s required installation spacing.
- Airflow: Treat CFM values as manufacturer-listed specifications for individual models. The examples above include 100 CFM for the Midea MVU30W4AST, 190 CFM for the Fusaro, and 280- or 400-CFM Aria configurations. They are not comparable independent test results, and installed performance is not established by the listed values alone.
- Filters: Midea lists reusable aluminum filters; Elica identifies dishwasher-safe mesh or baffle filters on the cited pages. Follow the chosen model’s cleaning instructions and confirm whether recirculation requires a separate filter.
- Controls, lighting, and noise: Compare these only against specifications for the exact configuration. Elica lists sones for Aria, but the available product information does not establish comparable test conditions across all models.
- Installation requirements: Use the current manual for duct sizing, electrical requirements, clearances, and mounting details, and consult local guidance where needed. A product-page summary is not a substitute for installation documentation.
How to narrow the shortlist
- Measure the installation space. Record the cabinet opening and available hood width, height, and depth, along with the cooking appliance and its installation requirements.
- Decide where the air will go. Establish whether you can duct outdoors or need recirculation, then rule out models whose documented configuration does not fit.
- Compare the exact specifications. Check model number, dimensions, airflow, filter type, and any required kit in the manufacturer’s current documentation.
- Confirm before ordering or installing. Resolve unclear venting claims with the manufacturer and check the installation manual for requirements that affect your cabinetry, ductwork, or electrical setup.
