The manufacturer’s detailed running-toilet procedure applies to a specific Champion two-piece configuration; other models may need different instructions and parts.
Start by identifying your toilet model
Find the toilet or tank model before ordering a component. American Standard’s support page links to a Toilet Part Service Guide that matches parts to a toilet model. Check the markings on the toilet or tank and use the guide to confirm the model and compatible part.
Model identification matters even within the Champion line: American Standard says current Champion flush-valve versions vary according to the specific model’s gallons-per-flush (GPF). Do not assume that a part number or repair for one American Standard toilet fits another.
If a Champion two-piece toilet keeps running
The following checks are for the Champion two-piece toilet configuration covered in American Standard’s Champion troubleshooting article, which identifies flush valve 3174.105-0070A. Use the instructions for your own model if it differs.

Check the flush-valve chain first
Before replacing parts, inspect the chain between the trip lever and flush valve. American Standard says it should be taut without slack, while still leaving enough length for the valve to close fully when the handle is released. A chain that is too short can hold the valve open; excessive slack can interfere with prompt opening.
Use the tank-water-level test to narrow the cause
Follow the manufacturer’s leak-test instructions and watch where the tank water level stops. The indicated part depends on the result:

| Test result | Manufacturer’s diagnosis for the covered Champion configuration | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Water level falls to the top of the flapper | Flapper seal 7301111-0070AP | Confirm your exact toilet model and order a compatible seal. |
| Water level falls below the seal | Flush-valve replacement | American Standard lists Champion two-piece flush valve 7382106-100.0070A as a replacement for the older 3174.105-0070A, but says current versions vary by model GPF. Verify the correct version before buying. |
| Water level does not drop during the test | Possible fill-valve problem: Universal Toilet Water Fill Valve 7381125-400.0070A | Debris can keep the fill valve from shutting off, allowing water to rise above the flush valve’s overflow tube. The manufacturer recommends flushing out the fill valve before replacing it. |
These outcomes are not a universal American Standard diagnosis. For a different toilet, consult its model-specific instructions rather than applying this table.
Check the trip lever if the flapper will not close
A bent or broken trip lever can hold the flapper open. A loose or worn lever may also contribute to erratic flushing. Trip levers are tank-specific, so identify the tank model and verify compatibility before selecting a replacement.

If adjusting the water level has not stopped the running
Do not keep adjusting the water level without identifying the cause. On the Champion configuration above, use the chain check and tank-water-level test; if the test points to the fill valve, the manufacturer says debris may be preventing it from shutting off and recommends flushing it out before replacement. For other models, find the model-specific instructions through American Standard’s support and FAQ pages.
If the toilet will not flush or flushes poorly
American Standard’s FAQ index includes a question about a toilet that does not flush and is out of warranty, but the index alone does not establish a repair procedure for every model or symptom. A no-flush or weak-flush problem can require model-specific diagnosis. Check the matching FAQ and product instructions instead of assuming the Champion running-toilet steps apply.

- Includes a PerforMAX fill valve and 2 in. flapper kit designed to restore the performance of toilets with a 2 in. flush valve by replacing worn or outdated components.
If a newly installed toilet leaks around the base
A leak at the base while flushing is a separate symptom from a tank that keeps running. American Standard lists this issue in its FAQ index, but the index does not provide enough detail to support a model-independent repair procedure. Consult the installation instructions and the FAQ for your exact toilet before attempting a repair.

American Standard publishes separate warranty information for toilets and toilet seats. Its warranty page says AS America, Inc. will honor applicable express warranty terms and conditions provided with the product. Check the terms for your specific toilet before deciding to purchase a part; a single warranty duration should not be assumed for every model.
