Solar Water Still: How It Works, What It Removes and What It Costs

A solar water still can separate water from salts and many nonvolatile contaminants, but its output is small and it cannot make every contaminated source safe.

A solar water still uses sunlight to evaporate source water, then collects the vapor after it condenses on a cover. That process can separate water from salts and many nonvolatile contaminants, but a homemade still is not a guaranteed way to make any water “pure” or safe to drink. Output is low, some chemicals can pass through, and safe construction materials matter.

How a solar water still works

In a basin still, source water sits in a shallow basin beneath a transparent, sloped cover. Sunlight warms the water and humid air inside the enclosure. Water vapor condenses on the cooler cover, forms droplets, and runs toward a low edge or trough where it can be collected separately. The USGS describes this as a low-tech distillation process in which solar heat causes dew to form on a surface such as plastic sheeting (USGS, “Desalination,” September 2, 2026).

The Safe Drinking Water Foundation describes basin stills and notes that a cover should be transparent, smooth and cleanable; the enclosure also needs to be sufficiently airtight for efficiency (Safe Drinking Water Foundation, “Solar Water Distillation,” December 8, 2016). These are general design principles, not a tested construction plan or a guarantee that a particular homemade assembly will produce drinking water.

What distillation can—and cannot—remove

Distillation leaves many germs and nonvolatile substances behind as water evaporates. CDC says household distillation can reduce parasites, bacteria and viruses, as well as several inorganic contaminants. It may not remove some volatile organic compounds, volatile solvents and certain pesticides; such substances can vaporize and travel with the water vapor (CDC, “About Home Water Treatment Systems,” April 10, 2024).

BKLES 3-in-1 Water Filter System for Survival Gear & Emergency Preparedness
  • 3-in-1 Innovative Water Filtration System Survival - BK3000 water filter supports electric and hand pump modes as well as solar charging. The solar electric water filter features dual 0.01-micron ultrafiltration membranes and a 6-stage water purification system composed of PP cotton, KDF, activated carbon, and coconut activated carbon fibers. Effectively improve water taste and quality. It has a better filtration effect than other water filters. Certified by SGS, FCC, and UL.
  • Easy-to-Use Water Filter Camping - Simply press a button to get clean water in rivers, lakes, streams and most water sources. With a maximum flow rate of 800~1000 ml/min, it can filter up to 240,000 ml per charge. In the process of automatic water dispensing, free your hands and you can handle other things. If the camping water filter runs out of power, with the upgraded hand pump, you can still get clean water by hand pressing. This is beyond the reach of other electric water purifiers.
  • Lightweight and Portable Water Filter for Outdoor Adventures - The water purifier survival weighs only 450 grams (0.99 pounds), making it easy to carry. The included storage case can store all accessories and can be attached to a backpack for quick and easy access. Travel water filter is an essential gear for emergency water needs such as camping, hiking, survival, backpacking, hurricane, hunting, fishing, domestic and foreign travel, emergency preparedness, rainstorms, earthquakes and floods.
  • Two Ways Of Charging for Convenience - The hiking water filter is equipped with a solar panel, which supports solar charging in addition to the traditional Type-C charging. When there is no electricity in extreme outdoor conditions, the water filter survival can be charged by sunlight. This is very convenient and practical. The backpacking water filter is a great choice for survival gear and supplies to be prepared for any situation. (Notice: When the first four indicator lights are all on, it means it is fully charged, and the last indicator light represents the solar charging status.)
  • Comprehensive Emergency Survival Kit - The BK-3000 solar water filter is designed for survival and includes essential features such as a 4-in-1 charging cable, LED lighting, SOS light and reverse charging of mobile devices. The emergency water filter can charge your mobile phone. The 4-in-1 charging cable meets all charging interfaces. Emergency light allows you to provide lighting at night and filter water outdoors easily.

That makes “pure water” too broad a promise. If the source contains fuel, toxic chemicals or radioactive materials, CDC warns that household treatment methods covered by its global-water guidance do not make it safe. Do not use a solar still as a blanket remedy for unknown contamination.

A 2014 study by Ahsan and colleagues reported more than 24% average salinity removal, more than 99% average arsenic removal and more than 80% pathogenic-bacteria removal in repeated tests on selected samples from Malaysia and Bangladesh. The samples included seawater, pond water, arsenic-contaminated groundwater and prepared saline water. Those are study-specific results, not performance guarantees for a different still, water source or operating condition (EPA HERO record for Ahsan et al., 2014).

How much water does it produce?

Expect a low-capacity method, not a dependable household supply. The Safe Drinking Water Foundation characterizes solar stills as low-capacity, and the USGS says a portable still produces small amounts. Neither establishes a universal daily yield for an unspecified homemade design. The actual amount depends on the particular construction and operating conditions, so a liters-per-day estimate should come from reproducible results for the exact model being considered.

Why “no-cost” needs qualification

Sunlight supplies the heat, and a builder may be able to repurpose suitable materials. But the term “no-cost” does not account for the basin, cover, collection channel, seals, tools or time if those must be acquired. More importantly, low price does not establish that a material is appropriate for contact with drinking water.

NSF/ANSI 62-2026 sets minimum materials, design, construction and performance requirements for covered drinking-water distillation systems, according to an August 18, 2026 announcement from the NSF Joint Committee on Drinking Water Treatment Units (NSF Joint Committee announcement). That scope does not mean improvised plastic film, sealant, a basin or a DIY assembly complies with the standard. A generic still design should not be treated as certified potable-water equipment.

Safety checks before relying on collected water

  • Identify the source and the hazard. Distillation can separate salts and many nonvolatile contaminants, but it is not a universal treatment for volatile chemicals or radioactive materials.
  • Consider every water-contact surface. The basin, cover, seals and collection path can affect the collected water. General design descriptions do not establish that improvised materials are suitable for drinking-water use.
  • Keep the collection path clean. Condensate can be recontaminated after distillation if the collection surface, trough or storage vessel is dirty.
  • Assess the full treatment chain. WHO’s desalination guidance treats safety as risk management involving source water, treatment and management of final water—not simply whether water has condensed (WHO, “Safe drinking-water from desalination,” March 1, 2011). That guidance does not certify a DIY still.

When a solar still makes sense

A solar still may be useful where sunlight is available and the goal is small-scale separation of water from salt or certain nonvolatile contaminants, provided the source and equipment are appropriate. It is a poor fit when you need a predictable volume, must address unknown or volatile chemical contamination, or cannot verify the safety of the water-contact materials. For drinking-water decisions, match the treatment method to the specific contaminants of concern rather than relying on the word “distilled.”
