A hang-and-go lathe-tool holder is a movable chisel caddy: it rests between the lathe’s bed ways while you work, then hangs on a wall when you put it away. The dimensions should be tailored to your turning tools and lathe rather than copied blindly from the example in WOOD Magazine’s project plan.
How the holder works
The caddy keeps turning tools within reach at the lathe. Its cleat fits between the bed ways, and a separate wall-mount assembly lets you hang it nearby when it is not in use. WOOD Magazine describes the design as customizable for the type and number of tools in a shop.
Measure your tools before cutting
Use your own tools to establish the backboard length, rest spacing, and hole sizes. The project’s example measurements are starting points, not a universal fit.
- Measure the overall length of your turning tools to determine the backboard length. The published example uses a 21-inch backboard, a little shorter than most of the tools.
- Measure from the butt end of each handle to its ferrule. Use that distance to set the gap between the upper rest and the base.
- Measure each tool’s ferrule diameter and the handle diameter about 2 inches from the butt end. Size the upper-rest holes for the ferrules and the other rest’s holes for the handles.
- Measure the distance between the ways on your lathe before sizing the cleat and retainer. WOOD Magazine recommends about 1/4 inch of clearance so the cleat can slide easily.
Build and mount the caddy
The plan uses plywood strips for the rests. Drill the strips, rip them to width, and attach them to the backboard; then add the base. A screw in each edge of the backboard retains the specified 10-inch miniature bungee cord, which secures the tools.

Make the cleat and retainer to suit the measured spacing of your lathe’s ways. Build the wall-mount parts and fasten their assembly to a wall stud. Follow the dimensions and construction details in the WOOD Magazine plan, adapting tool openings and fit to your equipment.
Check fit before relying on it
- Confirm that each tool sits in the intended rest openings based on its measured ferrule and handle diameters.
- Check the gap between the rests against the handle-to-ferrule measurement.
- Try the cleat between the actual lathe ways and confirm it slides without binding.
- Verify that the wall-mount assembly is secured to a stud and that the bungee retains the tools as intended.
The cited project does not state a load rating, measured durability, or safety evaluation, so treat fit and construction quality as shop-specific rather than assuming a tested capacity.
