There is no evidence here for an independently tested overall winner, so the two models below are specification-based examples—not a performance ranking. Choose by the comparable SACC cooling rating, your room and window setup, and the unit’s maintenance needs.
What counts as a floor air conditioner?
This guide uses “floor air conditioner” to mean a portable room air conditioner, not a permanently installed floor-standing split system. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) defines a portable AC as an encased portable assembly that delivers cooled, conditioned air to an enclosed space. It has a refrigeration source and may also include air circulation or heating. DOE’s portable air conditioner guidance explains the category and its regulatory context.
Specification-based portable AC examples
These examples illustrate different published capacities and features. Manufacturer specifications are not independent performance tests, and the available information does not establish which unit cools better in comparable conditions.

Compare cooling ratings on the same basis
Portable AC listings may show more than one capacity figure. SACC (Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity) and ASHRAE figures use different rating methods; do not compare one model’s SACC number with another model’s ASHRAE number as though they were equivalent. LG explains that DOE standardized a newer method that accounts for seasonally adjusted cooling capacity delivered indoors. For a like-for-like comparison, use the same rating method for every model under consideration.

Room-size guidance is also model-specific. LG’s “up to 250 sq. ft.” figure for the LP0623WSR is a manufacturer estimate; actual suitability depends on the room and installation conditions. Check the exact model’s guidance rather than treating a coverage figure as a guarantee.
Check the installation before buying
A portable unit still needs a workable exhaust route. Before choosing one, check the manufacturer’s instructions and your room:

- Window and vent kit: Confirm that the supplied window panel and exhaust hose can fit your window type and opening. Do not assume kits are universal; verify compatibility for the specific model.
- Hose route and placement: Make sure the unit can sit near the window without blocking circulation or creating an impractical hose path.
- Floor space and movement: Check the unit’s dimensions, weight, and caster details against the room and any doorway or threshold it must cross. A wheeled appliance can still be heavy to move.
- Water handling: Read the manual for drainage, condensate handling, and any maintenance required in the conditions where you will use it.
- Cleaning and controls: Check how the filter is removed and cleaned, and whether the controls you want—such as a remote or app—are included.
- Warranty and current package: Confirm the warranty, model number, included venting parts, and current availability with the seller or manufacturer before purchase.
Efficiency labels and DOE standards
Do not assume a portable AC qualifies under ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner criteria. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) purchasing guidance is for room air conditioners and expressly excludes portable ACs; ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner criteria likewise concern that product category. The Frigidaire model listed above is specifically identified by its manufacturer as not ENERGY STAR certified. These distinctions make it important to verify the exact appliance category and model rather than transfer a label or savings claim from a different kind of AC.
DOE says manufacturers must use the Appendix CC test procedure to determine compliance with portable-AC standards and that compliance with standards established in 2020 has been required since January 10, 2025. Its current portable-AC page also records a May 16, 2025 proposal concerning withdrawal of DOE’s prior determination that portable ACs qualify as covered products. Because regulatory status can change, consult the current DOE page for the latest information.

A practical selection checklist
- Measure the room and use the exact model’s room guidance as an estimate, not a promise.
- Compare SACC with SACC, or another rating method with the same method—not mixed capacity figures.
- Verify that the exhaust hose and included window kit suit your window and planned placement.
- Check dimensions, weight, filter cleaning, water handling, controls, warranty, and the current included accessories.
- Compare energy-use information only when it is stated on a comparable basis; do not treat Wi-Fi, a large BTU number, or an efficiency label for another product category as proof of better performance.
DOE warns that oversizing room ACs can raise purchase cost and energy use and impair humidity removal through excessive cycling. That guidance is specifically for room air conditioners, not portable ACs, so treat it as general room-AC context rather than portable-specific proof. See DOE FEMP’s room AC purchasing guidance.
