When a transformer “blows,” it has suffered an electrical or mechanical failure, or a protective device has operated. Utility equipment may disconnect it to contain the problem. The result can be a small-area outage or a much wider interruption, and the incident may involve a bang, fire, smoke or leaking oil—but not every transformer failure is an explosion. If you see damaged transformer equipment, move away, keep others clear and contact emergency services or the local utility. Never approach or try to repair or extinguish it.

What does it mean when a transformer blows?

“Blows” is informal shorthand, not a precise description of one failure. It can refer to a fuse operating, an internal electrical fault, physical damage or a fire. The sequence and cause depend on the equipment and incident; there is no single failure pattern that applies to all transformers.

After a fault, protective equipment or utility operators may disconnect the transformer to limit damage and protect the electrical system. The immediate effect for customers is often an outage, but its size depends on the transformer’s role, the system configuration and whether another source can supply power.

How far can the outage spread?

A distribution transformer typically serves a more limited area than a large transmission or substation transformer, though the number of customers affected varies. A major asset can have consequences well beyond the substation. The US Department of Energy says more than 90 percent of consumed US power passes through high-voltage transformers at some point; the page does not state a publication year for that figure (US Department of Energy).

  • Rubber Palm: The gloves have rubber palms that offer strong insulating and flame-retardant properties, providing safety and reliability during use.
  • Anti-Slip Grip: The textured palms ensure a firm grip with anti-slip design, helping you handle tasks with confidence and prevent mistakes.
  • Durable Nylon Fabric: Made from nylon fabric, the electrician's gloves are tough, resistant to wear and aging, and have a long-lasting lifespan.
  • Versatile Use: These gloves are suitable for home and low-risk electrical maintenance tasks, such as handling instruments, appliances, mechanical equipment, automotive work, and other installation or maintenance projects. For electrical work where abrasion, cutting, puncture, or mechanical damage may occur, use appropriate leather protector gloves over the insulating gloves and follow applicable electrical safety practices.

Two reported incidents show why there is no standard outage size:

  • North Hyde substation, UK: The National Energy System Operator reported that a transformer fire led to 71,655 domestic and commercial customers losing power and caused a complete loss of supplies to part of Heathrow Airport’s private distribution network. Its review identified catastrophic failure of a transformer high-voltage bushing as the cause. This was a particular major-substation event, not a typical customer count (NESO review).
  • Turramurra, Australia: Fire and Rescue NSW reported in 2025 that a transformer fire cut electricity to more than 100 homes. Firefighters initially maintained a safety zone around equipment involving 11,000 volts; they moved in to extinguish the fire after power was cut. The cause was under investigation when the report was published (Fire and Rescue NSW incident report).

System redundancy can reduce the effect of a failure, but arrangements vary. A US Nuclear Regulatory Commission historical review describes main transformer failures that led to generator trips and discusses fire spread and cascading effects. It also describes redundant arrangements at nuclear facilities that can preserve offsite power. Those facility-specific safeguards should not be assumed to exist on every part of the grid (NRC review).

Is a blown transformer dangerous?

Yes. Damaged equipment may still have energized parts and can pose electrical, arc or blast hazards. A fire may produce smoke or involve leaking oil. Do not enter a substation, open a pad-mounted transformer, touch debris or assume the equipment is safe because flames or noise have stopped.

Hawaiian Electric tells people to evacuate, contact the utility, keep at least 100 feet from the hazard and stay upwind and uphill from fires and spills. That 100-foot distance is Hawaiian Electric’s guidance, not a universal legal distance. The utility also says: “Do not try to extinguish transformer fires until otherwise instructed by utility personnel.” Follow local emergency responders and the relevant utility’s instructions (Hawaiian Electric transformer safety).

What should you do if a transformer is smoking, burning or damaged?

  1. Move away and keep others back. Do not approach to inspect, photograph or move anything. Treat nearby debris and wires as energized.
  2. Call local emergency services for an active fire or immediate danger. Report the damaged equipment, smoke, flames or downed wires to the local utility as well. Emergency numbers vary by location; the reviewed guidance does not establish one number for all regions.
  3. Stay clear until utility or emergency crews say the area is safe. Do not attempt to extinguish the fire, open equipment or handle a spill.

Crews may work from a safety zone while equipment is live. In the Turramurra incident, firefighters kept their distance from the 11,000-volt equipment until power was cut. Leave investigation and repair to trained responders and utility personnel.

Why did the transformer make a loud bang?

A loud bang can accompany a fault or a protective device operating, but sound alone does not confirm that a transformer exploded—or identify what failed. Keep away from the equipment and report the incident rather than approaching to investigate. A failure may also occur without a dramatic sound.

How long will the power be out?

There is no reliable universal restoration time. Utilities must assess damage and access, isolate hazards, determine whether the unit can be repaired and check what alternate supply is available. The impact may also depend on whether a fire has damaged surrounding equipment or other infrastructure.

Georgia Power says it prioritizes critical services such as hospitals and public safety services during restoration. In some cases, a utility may not restore service to damaged customer-side equipment until a certified electrician has repaired it, where shock or fire risks remain (Georgia Power electrical safety).

Replacing a large transformer can involve a long equipment-supply timeline: DOE says procurement lead times for large power transformers can be a year or longer. That is procurement context, not a forecast that customers will be without power for a year. System configuration, spare equipment, temporary arrangements and repair options can affect restoration before a replacement arrives (US Department of Energy).

What causes a transformer to fail?

Causes differ by incident, and the examples do not establish one dominant cause for transformers generally. NESO’s North Hyde review attributed that fire to catastrophic failure of a high-voltage bushing. In its Turramurra report, Fire and Rescue NSW said the cause was under investigation; a vehicle strike was only one possibility reported at the time. The NRC review describes failure consequences, not a universal cause.
