A 1200 CFM range hood is a high-capacity option, not a default upgrade for every large range. Whether it fits your kitchen depends on the cooking surface and habits, hood capture area, the exact blower rating and duct installation, sound at the speeds you will use, and makeup-air requirements where you live.
Before buying, check the range and hood documentation and ask your local building department about code requirements. A maximum CFM label alone does not tell you how much air the installed hood will move or whether you need a particular makeup-air setup.

What 1200 CFM tells you—and what it does not
CFM describes airflow capacity, but a listed maximum may refer to open-air blower performance rather than airflow through a real duct system. Broan-NuTone distinguishes “MAX Blower CFM” from HVI-rated performance; check the specification sheet for the exact hood and blower configuration. Compare the relevant HVI rating and its stated test conditions, not just the largest number in a product listing. [c1] [c4]
Installed performance also depends on the duct diameter, route, fittings, and termination. A 1200 CFM label does not promise that every installation will deliver 1200 CFM. Follow the product’s installation manual and performance information, and seek qualified ventilation advice if the design is complex.

When might a 1200 CFM hood make sense?
A high-capacity configuration may be worth considering for a large cooking surface or frequent high-heat cooking, provided the hood geometry and ventilation system suit the range and kitchen. It is not automatically needed for every large range. The decision should account for the actual appliance, how you cook, capture area, ducting, sound, and makeup-air consequences.
For example, Zephyr lists a 1200 CFM configuration for its Roma Pro 48-inch wall hood. That is a product option, not a universal sizing recommendation for 48-inch ranges. Verify the exact configuration, compatible blower, and installation documentation before comparing it with other options. [c3]
If your cooking setup does not warrant the high-capacity configuration, a lower-capacity hood may avoid unnecessary system complexity. The available evidence does not support a universal CFM-per-range-width or CFM-per-BTU formula, so use the appliance and hood manufacturers’ guidance rather than treating a rule of thumb as a requirement.
Compare the complete hood system
Use this checklist when evaluating a hood and blower:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Match capture area to the cooking surface. Check hood width and depth, mounting height, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- Confirm what the CFM rating represents. Identify the blower arrangement and compare the product’s HVI-rated performance at the stated conditions with its maximum open-air figure.
- Check duct requirements. Review the exact model’s duct connection, route, fittings, and termination instructions. Do not downsize ducting without checking the manual and performance requirements.
- Compare sound at likely operating speeds. Look for ratings at the speeds you expect to use; maximum airflow alone does not establish how loud a hood will be in everyday use.
- Plan makeup air and code review. Ask the local building department or code official which rules and amendments apply to your installation.
- Verify accessory compatibility. Confirm the blower and any makeup-air components are listed for the exact hood model.
- Get qualified input where needed. Include HVAC or ventilation expertise when the installation needs system design or commissioning.
Hood geometry, ducting, and sound
A stronger blower cannot compensate for a hood that does not capture the cooking plume. Check hood width and depth, mounting height, and proximity to walls against the range and hood manufacturers’ instructions. Treat these as design checks: the available sources do not establish a universal hood-size formula.
Duct size and route are model-specific. For example, Broan-NuTone’s E60 dual-blower specification lists 4½ × 18½-inch ducting alongside a 1200 CFM configuration. That example shows why you should consult the exact model’s documentation; it does not mean every 1200 CFM hood uses that duct size. [c4]
Prefer a duct layout that follows the hood manufacturer’s performance requirements. Check the specified fittings and exterior termination, and have a qualified professional review the route when needed. Avoid assuming that all models share the same duct dimensions or that an advertised maximum will be delivered through any installation.
Sound is also model- and speed-specific. Broan’s E60 specification lists up to 14.5 sones at high speed for its dual-blower arrangement. Compare specifications for the exact hood at the speeds you expect to use; this figure is not a category-wide estimate. [c4]
Makeup air and local code
Makeup air is a likely design question for a 1200 CFM installation. Broan-NuTone summarizes IRC section 1503 and IMC section 505 as addressing kitchen exhaust systems capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM, with local amendments possible. Its guidance recommends using the HVI-certified CFM rating at 0.1-inch static pressure when assessing whether makeup air is required. Check the locally adopted code and its interpretation before buying. [c1]
Do not assume that every 1200 CFM hood legally requires a 1200 CFM makeup-air unit. The applicable requirement and solution depend on the adopted rules, how capacity is rated, the home and installation, other exhaust, combustion appliances, and the makeup-air equipment. Broan-NuTone advises: “Customers/installers should always check with their local jurisdiction for specific make-up air requirements and code amendments that are applicable in their area.” [c1]
Broan’s makeup-air guide says needs vary with factors including home size, airtightness, other exhaust ventilation, combustion appliances, and damper configuration. It recommends consulting a qualified HVAC professional and checking the system after installation. [c5]

Planning the purchase and installation
Before ordering, assemble the range or cooktop documentation, hood model and blower details, proposed duct route, and local code requirements. Confirm capture dimensions and mounting instructions before cabinetry or a custom enclosure is built. Ask the installer to identify any required makeup-air components and confirm that proposed accessories work with the selected hood.
For a 1200 CFM system, use a qualified HVAC or ventilation professional where design or commissioning is needed. Broan’s application guidance says makeup-air needs vary by home and installation characteristics and recommends qualified professional input. [c5]
FAQ
Do I really need a 1200 CFM range hood?
Not necessarily. It may suit a large cooking surface or frequent high-heat cooking, but fit depends on the appliance, cooking habits, hood geometry, duct installation, and makeup-air requirements. There is no universal sizing formula in the reviewed evidence.

What size range hood do I need for a 48-inch range?
Do not choose solely by range width. Check the range maker’s ventilation guidance and the hood’s capture dimensions, mounting instructions, blower configuration, and performance data. Zephyr offers a 1200 CFM configuration for one 48-inch wall hood, but that does not make 1200 CFM necessary for every 48-inch range. [c3]
Will a 1200 CFM hood require makeup air?
It is a likely code and design issue. Broan-NuTone summarizes IRC/IMC provisions as addressing systems capable of exhausting more than 400 CFM, but local amendments and rating interpretation matter. Ask your local building department which requirements apply. [c1]
Will an advertised 1200 CFM hood deliver 1200 CFM after installation?
Not necessarily. The listed maximum may be an open-air blower figure, while delivered performance depends on the rating conditions and installed duct system. Compare the exact model’s HVI-rated data, duct requirements, and installation instructions. [c1] [c4]
What duct size does a 1200 CFM hood need?
There is no one duct size for all 1200 CFM hoods. Follow the exact model’s installation manual and performance information. For example, Broan’s E60 dual-blower specification lists 4½ × 18½-inch ducting; that specification should not be generalized to other models. [c4]

How should I compare hood noise?
Compare sound ratings for the exact model at the operating speeds you expect to use. Broan lists up to 14.5 sones at high speed for the E60 dual-blower arrangement, a model-specific figure rather than a general estimate for high-CFM hoods. [c4]
