You can make a large, shallow moon wall decoration with a flexible PEX hoop, a moon-print shower curtain, LED strip lighting and frosted vinyl diffuser layers. The basic work is cutting, stretching, stapling and clipping—though the lighting color, diffusion and wall support determine how polished the result looks.
How the project works
The moon is a printed fabric-like surface stretched across a circular PEX frame, with LED lighting and diffuser layers behind it. It reads as a glowing moon on the wall, not a sculpted sphere. Caleb Kraft’s Make: project was published March 27–28, 2019; the construction approach below follows that build, while its historical prices should not be treated as current estimates. Materials and tools
- Moon image: A moon-print shower curtain large enough for the intended hoop. Kraft chose one over a custom backlit plastic print for its scale and lower historical cost. He notes that the larger curtain’s moon was somewhat elongated and its top grommets overlapped the image.
- Frame: PEX tubing, selected for its flexibility and because it can be stapled into.
- Lighting: Adhesive-backed LED strip lighting sized to run around the frame.
- Diffusion: One or more inexpensive frosted vinyl shower curtains to soften the light behind the image.
- Mounting: PEX clips and screws for distributed wall support.
- Tools: A hand saw, staple gun and scissors. Kraft used a pull saw intended for wood to cut the PEX.
Build the moon
- Form the hoop. Cut the PEX tubing to the desired circumference and bend it into a circle. The tubing is flexible, so plan for support around the perimeter rather than relying on a single hanging point.
- Stretch the image over the frame. Lay the moon-print curtain across the hoop, pull it taut, and staple the material to the PEX. Work around the circle gradually to keep tension reasonably even, then trim excess fabric with scissors. Avoid stretching so aggressively that the image distorts more than it already does.
- Attach the LEDs. Apply the adhesive-backed strip along the PEX so the light sits behind the image surface. The source build used an RGB strip; color choice matters because its white setting appeared strongly blue rather than neutral.
- Add diffuser layers. Place frosted vinyl curtain material behind the image to soften visible LED points and spread the glow. Kraft experimented with additional diffuser material and more LEDs; these were qualitative adjustments, not measurements of a standard brightness or spacing.
- Test before final mounting. Turn the lights on and inspect the image from the front. Adjust the diffusion or light placement if the LEDs show through unevenly. Moving the lighting farther from the wall improved the glow in Kraft’s experiments, but increased how far the finished piece projected into the room.
- Support the frame at several points. Screw PEX clips into the wall and press the hoop into them. Kraft found that hanging the flexible frame from one hook distorted it; he cut off part of the clip tips to reduce their grip. Adapt clip placement and attachment to your wall and frame rather than assuming one hook will keep the hoop round.
Choose lighting and depth deliberately
For a more natural-looking moon
Use a strip with a more neutral white output if the goal is moonlight rather than colored effects. Kraft said the inexpensive RGB strip’s white looked “super blue” and that he would seek a truer-white strip next time. That is a project-specific observation, not a claim about all RGB strips.
For smoother illumination
Diffuser layers can soften concentrated LED points, but the result depends on the materials and distances in your assembly. More diffusion and greater spacing can make the installation deeper; Kraft reported that moving the light farther from the wall improved the glow while making the piece thicker. The source does not specify tested distances, LED models or a guaranteed hotspot-free arrangement.

For a round shape that stays put
Distribute support around the hoop with clips instead of suspending the flexible frame at one point. The appropriate number and location of supports depend on the frame size and wall; Kraft does not provide a measured load rating or a universal clip spacing.
What the original project’s prices do—and do not—tell you
Kraft reported in 2019 that a sign-shop quote for a six-foot-wide high-resolution moon image printed on backlit plastic was over $200. He reported roughly $30 for the large moon shower curtain he selected, $40 for a smaller curtain, and $50 for another curtain option he did not buy. These were his project-era observations, not current prices, quotes for your location, or a complete bill of materials. Products and costs may have changed since publication.

Possible extension: moon-phase lighting
Kraft proposed using a microcontroller and real-time clock to make the illumination reflect moon phases. That was an idea for a future project, not a feature implemented or demonstrated in this build. Treat it as a separate electronics project rather than an established capability of the simple wall decoration.
