Because plant size and growing setup vary, choose for the recipient’s garden rather than assuming one cage, pot, or seed kit fits everyone.
How to choose a tomato-growing gift
Before buying, consider whether the recipient grows in a garden bed or containers, starts plants from seed or buys transplants, and grows bush-type (determinate) or vining (indeterminate) tomatoes. Those details help narrow the useful options below.
- For a bed: Look for durable support, planting tools, labels, or harvest gear.
- For a patio or balcony: Consider an adequately sized pot or grow bag, plus watering supplies.
- For a seed starter: Choose seeds and tools that suit someone who enjoys raising transplants.
- For a low-fuss gift: A trowel or clean harvest bucket is practical without requiring you to know the recipient’s variety.
Support gifts for tomato plants
Support gifts are most useful when their height, strength, openings, and anchoring suit the plant and growing space. Determinate tomatoes are generally more compact than indeterminate vines, but actual size varies by cultivar and growing conditions. University of Illinois Extension says determinate plants commonly reach 3–4 feet and indeterminate plants can reach at least 6 feet; Penn State Extension’s guidance is supports around 2–3 feet for determinate varieties and around 5 feet for indeterminate varieties. Treat these as growing guidance, not guaranteed plant or support dimensions.
1. Tomato cage
A cage is a straightforward gift for someone growing tomatoes in a bed. Match its height and sturdiness to the variety, and check that its openings are workable for reaching stems and fruit. The University of Illinois Extension advises selecting and anchoring cages to suit the variety. Its tomato-growing guidance and Penn State’s support advice can help a buyer think through plant size.

2. Tomato trellis
A trellis can support vining tomatoes where the grower has room to install and secure one. Consider the plant’s expected height and how the trellis will be anchored rather than choosing by appearance alone.
3. Heavy-duty plant stakes
Stakes suit growers who prefer to tie plants to individual supports. Choose a length and strength appropriate to the variety and the site; the stake needs to remain stable as the plant grows.
4. Garden twine or plant ties
These help attach stems to stakes or trellises. They are useful add-ons for a grower who already has a support structure, but they are general gardening supplies rather than tomato-specific necessities.
5. Reusable soft plant ties
Soft ties provide another way to secure stems to supports. They can be a handy small gift, especially alongside a trellis or stakes.
6. A support system for a raised bed
For someone with a raised bed, consider a support designed to fit that bed or its layout. Confirm dimensions and attachment method before buying; support systems are not automatically interchangeable.
7. A plant-support accessory
Clips or other compatible accessories can complement a support the recipient already owns. Check the existing system’s size and design so the accessory will fit.
Container-growing gifts for small spaces
Container growing can make tomatoes an option for people with limited garden space, but the container must suit the plant and the grower’s watering habits. UC ANR says tomato varieties may require 5–15 gallons of soil, depending on variety. That is a range, not a universal shopping specification; help the recipient choose a suitable tomato and pot size together. UC ANR also notes that grow bags and clay pots dry faster than plastic pots.

A pot can work for a suitable tomato variety when it provides adequate soil volume. Clay pots dry faster than plastic ones, so the recipient’s willingness to monitor watering is part of the choice.
10. A sturdy plastic container
Plastic pots may suit a grower who wants a container that dries less quickly than clay or a grow bag. Choose based on the plant’s needs and the space available, not on material alone.
11. Pot saucers
Saucers can help manage drainage around patio containers. Check that the saucer fits the chosen pot and the grower’s setup.
12. A watering can
A watering can is a useful general gardening gift for someone tending pots or beds. It is especially relevant to container growers, who need to pay attention to moisture as conditions change.
13. A watering attachment or irrigation gear
For a grower who already has a hose or irrigation setup, a compatible watering accessory can be more useful than a standalone gadget. Confirm what fittings or system the recipient uses.
Seed-starting gifts for variety lovers
Seeds make sense for gardeners who want more choice than local transplant selections may offer and enjoy raising plants themselves. Cornell Garden-Based Learning notes that starting from seed gives gardeners more variety choices than relying on local transplants. These gifts are less suited to someone who prefers to buy established plants.

14. Tomato seed packets
Choose packets that match the recipient’s interests and growing context. Without knowing their preferred varieties, a small selection can offer options without assuming a single tomato type is right.
15. A seed-starting tray
A tray gives a seed-starting gardener a place to organize seedlings. It is most useful for someone who already starts plants or wants to begin doing so.
16. Seed-starting pots
Small pots can support raising transplants before they move outdoors. Pair them with seeds only if the recipient is interested in starting plants from seed.
17. Plant labels
Labels help keep varieties identifiable as seedlings grow. They are a simple, general gardening supply that works well alongside seed packets.
18. A seed-organizing box
A storage box can keep packets together between planting seasons. Choose one that suits the recipient’s existing seed collection rather than assuming they need a large organizer.
Practical tools and harvest gifts
Tools that support planting and harvesting suit many tomato growers, regardless of whether they use seeds, transplants, beds, or containers. Illinois Extension lists a trowel for transplant holes and a clean bucket for hauling tomatoes.
