- Check the terms and item identity. Confirm whether the item is final sale, sold as-is, and without a warranty. Photograph its labels and compare it with the product page or assembly instructions when available.
- Inspect the whole piece. Photograph all sides and defects. Check structural components, drawers, shelves, legs, safety restraints, and fasteners. Ask whether staff can note condition and included parts on the receipt; this depends on store practice and is not guaranteed.
- Check fit and transport. Measure the furniture and the route through doors, stair turns, elevators, and vehicle openings, as well as the final room location. Confirm who loads and transports it and who bears handling risk.
- Price the usable item. Add purchase price, tax, delivery or hauling, replacement hardware, repair or finish work, assembly labor, and disposal costs if needed. Compare that total with a comparable new item, including its return option and warranty.
- Decide whether to walk away. Do not buy an item with structural damage, missing load-bearing parts, an unresolved recall or safety issue, or a fit problem just because its sticker price looks low.
