How Much Laundry Fits in Your Washer? Load Size Chart by Pounds, Drum Size, and Real-Life Items

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A full load of laundry is not the same thing as a packed washer. For most homes, a normal full-size washing machine handles about 10 to 16 pounds of dry laundry, depending on drum capacity and cycle. A large-capacity washer may handle 18 to 20 pounds, and some extra-large 5.0 cubic-foot-plus machines can handle roughly 20 to 25 pounds when the load is loose enough to tumble.

The fast rule is simple: fill the drum loosely, leave roughly a hand-width of space at the top, and do not compress clothes to make them fit. If the washer looks full but the clothes cannot lift, roll, drop, and rinse, the load is too large.

On our job sites, laundry problems often show up as construction problems: a second-floor washer that bangs during spin, a standpipe that overflows on drain-out, a shutoff valve that has not moved in 12 years, or an old rubber hose that fails behind a machine nobody pulls out. Load size matters because larger loads move more water, create more wet weight, and put more force into the floor, drain, hoses, valves, and machine suspension.

Washing Machine Load Size Chart

Use this chart as a practical starting point. Always check your washer manual because cycle limits vary, but these ranges work for typical residential machines in the United States.

Load size Dry laundry weight Drum fill cue Real-life examples Best use
Small 3 to 6 lb About one-third full 2 to 3 outfits, a few shirts, light delicates Quick wash, delicates, lightly soiled items
Medium 6 to 8 lb About half full 4 to 5 outfits, mixed shirts and underwear, small towel load Everyday laundry in compact or standard washers
Large 11 to 12 lb About three-quarters full 6 to 8 bath towels, several pairs of jeans, family clothing load Normal cycle in many 3.5 to 4.4 cu ft washers
Extra-large 18 to 21+ lb Loose fill, not packed tight Large towel load, bulky bedding in the right machine, heavy family wash Large-capacity 4.6 to 5.0+ cu ft washers

A good washer load is measured by both weight and movement. A pile of T-shirts may weigh 12 pounds and wash well in a medium-size drum. A comforter may weigh less than that but still be too bulky to rinse properly because it fills the drum volume before it reaches the weight limit.

Washer Capacity by Cubic Feet and Pounds

Washer capacity is sold in cubic feet, but homeowners usually think in baskets, towels, jeans, and bedding. The two measurements are related, but they are not interchangeable. Cubic feet tells you the size of the drum. Pounds tells you the dry weight of the fabric. Bulk, fabric type, water absorption, and cycle design all change the real limit.

Washer capacity Typical category Approximate dry load Practical household fit
1.5 to 2.8 cu ft Compact 6 to 10 lb Apartment loads, small households, frequent washing
3.5 to 4.0 cu ft Standard full-size 10 to 14 lb Most everyday family laundry
4.1 to 4.5 cu ft Upper standard 12 to 16 lb Larger clothing loads and moderate towel loads
4.6 to 5.0 cu ft Large capacity 16 to 20 lb Large family loads, towels, some bedding
5.0+ cu ft Extra-large 18 to 25 lb Bulky bedding and high-volume laundry, if items tumble freely

A common 4.0 cubic-foot washer is a useful calibration point: roughly 4 pounds is a small load, 8 pounds is a medium load, and 12 pounds is a large load. Many compact washers should stay under 8 to 10 pounds. Many large tubs, especially 5.0 cubic feet and larger, can handle around 18 to 25 pounds depending on the machine and the fabric bulk.

Do not treat these numbers as permission to pack the washer solid. A dense load of jeans, sweatshirts, and towels can exceed the machine’s practical limit before it looks full. A bulky load of bedding can exceed the drum’s movement limit before it gets heavy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to Measure Your Own Laundry Load

The most reliable homeowner method takes five minutes and costs nothing.

  1. Weigh an empty laundry basket on a bathroom scale.
  2. Fill it with a normal load you actually wash.
  3. Weigh the full basket.
  4. Subtract the empty basket weight.
  5. Mark a line on the basket for your washer’s regular load size.

For example, if the empty basket weighs 2 pounds and the full basket weighs 15 pounds, the laundry load is 13 pounds. That is a reasonable large load for many 3.5 to 4.4 cubic-foot washers, but it may be too much for a compact machine.

This works better than guessing because laundry is deceptive. Ten pounds of athletic wear looks very different from ten pounds of towels. Wet towels become extremely heavy, and during spin that weight tries to move through the machine, the floor framing, and the drain system.

How Full Should a Washer Be?

For a top-load washer, place clothes loosely around the agitator or wash plate. Do not wrap sheets around the agitator, and do not press clothes down. For a front-loader, load clothes loosely until the drum is about three-quarters full for a large load, leaving space at the top for tumbling.

In practical terms, you should be able to slide your hand into the top of the drum without forcing it. If you have to push the load down to close the lid or door, it is overloaded.

  • Three Comfort-Grip Handles — Includes 3 soft-grip handles (front and side) for secure one-handed or two-handed carrying and improved control.
  • Clothes-Safe, Durable Construction — Sturdy plastic with smooth edges helps prevent snagging on delicate items while withstanding everyday use.
  • Compact Footprint for Easy Storage — Measures approximately 21.2" L x 19.9" W x 11.2" H — ideal for laundry, closets, bathrooms, dorms and general home storage.

High-efficiency washers often use less visible water by design. That does not mean the washer is underfilled. ENERGY STAR-certified full-size clothes washers use about 14 gallons per load compared with about 20 gallons for standard machines. Adding water manually can defeat the machine’s wash action, waste water, and leave detergent behind.

Common Item Weights for Laundry Loads

These are practical dry-weight ranges. Actual weights vary by fabric, size, and thickness.

Item Approximate dry weight Load note
T-shirt 0.25 to 0.5 lb Light and easy to mix
Pair of jeans 1 to 1.5 lb Dense; balance with similar items
Bath towel 1 to 1.5 lb Absorbs a lot of water
Hoodie or sweatshirt 1 to 2 lb Heavy when wet
Twin sheet set 2 to 3 lb Keep loose to avoid twisting
Queen sheet set 3 to 5 lb Wash separately from dense towels
Comforter 5 to 12+ lb Bulky; drum volume matters more than dry weight

If you wash towels, jeans, or bedding together, think about wet balance. One bath mat or one comforter by itself can create a violent spin cycle because the weight collects on one side of the drum. Add a few similar-weight items when the manual allows it, or use a bulky cycle designed to manage the load differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bedding and Bulky Loads

Bulky loads are where many washing machine load charts fall short. A comforter can be under the pound limit and still be wrong for the washer. If it fills the drum like a cork, water and detergent cannot move through it, and the spin cycle may not balance.

As a practical guide, many king-size comforters need about a 5.0 cubic-foot washer or larger. Some thinner comforters will fit in slightly smaller machines, but they still need room to fold, roll, and release water. If the comforter stays in one tight ball for the whole cycle, it is not washing well.

Better bedding rules

  • Wash one bulky item at a time unless the manual says otherwise.
  • Do not mix comforters with jeans, bath mats, or dense towel loads.
  • Use the bulky or bedding cycle when available.
  • If the item barely fits dry, it will not rinse well wet.
  • Use a laundromat commercial washer for oversized bedding instead of forcing it.

Spending $8 to $15 at a laundromat for a large comforter is cheaper than shortening the life of a washer suspension, bearing, belt, pump, or upstairs laundry floor assembly.

Detergent Dosing for Small, Medium, and Large Loads

More laundry does not automatically mean more detergent. In high-efficiency washers, excess detergent is one of the most common causes of residue, odor, suds errors, and poor rinsing. Too much detergent can make a washer look overloaded because clothes come out stiff, slick, or still soapy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow the detergent label, then adjust for three things: load size, soil level, and water hardness. For a small or lightly soiled load, use less than the cap’s maximum line. For a large, dirty load, increase only within the label range. Pods are convenient, but one pod can be too much for a small load and too little for a very large or heavily soiled load, depending on the product.

If clothes come out with white streaks, a sour smell, or a slippery feel, reduce detergent before assuming the washer is failing. Run a cleaning cycle, wipe the door gasket on front-loaders, and leave the door open after use so the drum can dry.

What Happens When You Overload a Washer?

An overloaded washer usually fails in stages. First, clothes do not move correctly. Then detergent does not rinse out. Then the machine has to work harder to balance and spin. Over time, that strain shows up in suspension rods, shock absorbers, bearings, belts, pumps, and drain components.

Common signs of overloading include clothes that are still soapy, towels that smell musty after drying, long cycle times, repeated unbalanced-load warnings, banging during spin, standing water, or a washer that walks across the floor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Symptom Likely cause What to check first
Clothes still soapy Too much detergent or overloaded drum Use less detergent; reduce load by one-third
Washer banging Imbalance, poor leveling, shipping bolts, or floor flex Level the machine; confirm shipping bolts are removed; split dense loads
Drain overflow Standpipe, trap, vent, or drain capacity problem Stop using large loads until the drain is checked
Musty smell Overloading, excess detergent, closed door, dirty gasket Clean washer; leave door open; reduce soap
Clothes still wet Load too heavy, poor balance, weak spin, drain issue Redistribute load; try smaller load; inspect drain hose

One overloaded wash probably will not ruin a machine. Repeated overloading is different. It increases wear and exposes weak installation details, especially in tight laundry closets and second-floor laundry rooms.

The Construction Side of Large Washer Loads

A washing machine is not just an appliance. It is a water, drain, electrical, vibration, and floor-load system. When we remodel laundry rooms, we look at the whole setup before assuming a larger washer is a simple swap.

Water supply and shutoffs

Modern laundry hookups should have accessible hot and cold shutoff valves. If the valves are frozen, corroded, buried behind cabinetry, or impossible to reach, replace or relocate them during the project. Exercise the valves once or twice a year so they still work when a hose fails.

We also recommend braided stainless steel supply hoses instead of old rubber hoses, with annual inspection for bulges, corrosion, kinks, and seepage. In upstairs laundry rooms, a drain pan and leak sensor are inexpensive protection compared with ceiling, insulation, drywall, flooring, and cabinet damage below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Drain capacity and standpipe issues

Large washers discharge a lot of water quickly. If the standpipe, trap, vent, or branch drain is marginal, the problem may not show up until a heavy load drains. Gurgling, slow draining, water backing out of the standpipe, or sewer odor are not normal laundry-room quirks. They are signs to stop and diagnose the drain.

Plumbing code requirements vary by jurisdiction, but laundry standpipe, trap, and fixture connection details are not guesswork. When moving or adding laundry hookups, the work may need a permit and inspection.

Vibration, floor stiffness, and upstairs laundry

Spin cycles create dynamic force, not just static weight. A washer that behaves on a concrete slab may shake badly on an older second floor. Leveling matters, but so does floor stiffness. If the floor flexes, the machine’s suspension has to fight both the load and the structure under it.

Electrical protection

Laundry areas require proper receptacle placement and protection under current electrical standards adopted locally. Older homes may have outdated receptacles, shared circuits, missing GFCI protection, or poor access behind stacked units. If you are moving the laundry area or adding an outlet, use a licensed electrician where required and plan for inspection.

Washer Installation and Hookup Costs in 2026

If your hookups already exist and are in good condition, installing a washer may be a modest appliance connection. If the project involves moving drains, opening walls, adding electrical, repairing finishes, or controlling vibration, the cost moves into remodeling territory.

Project scope Typical 2026 US cost What it usually includes
Basic washer set-in and connection $129 to $263; many jobs around $184 Connect to existing hot/cold water, drain, and proper receptacle
Simple hookup only From about $50 Very limited labor where everything is ready and accessible
Broader washer/dryer installation About $750 average; complex jobs up to about $2,000 Appliance setup, minor parts, vent or utility coordination depending on scope
Install washer with plumbing/electrical/box/finish work About $1,039 to $2,137 per machine Rough-in, valves, drain box, receptacle work, wall repair, local site conditions
Move hookups within same room About $500 to $2,000 Short plumbing and drain relocation, limited wall repair
Relocate laundry upstairs, basement, or garage About $1,200 to $5,000 Longer plumbing, drain, venting, electrical, floor, access, and finish work

Cost drivers include distance to existing water and drain lines, wall and floor finishes, panel capacity, breaker type, gas versus electric dryer work, dryer vent routing, local labor rates, permit and inspection fees, stacking kits, pedestals, drain pans, automatic shutoff valves, and leak sensors. Permit allowances commonly run about $50 to $500. A new outlet may run about $100 to $450. Dryer vent installation often falls around $140 to $600.

When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable when you are replacing a washer in the same location, the shutoff valves work, the hoses are new or in good condition, the drain is sound, the receptacle is correct, and the machine can be moved without damaging flooring or trim. Even then, take the time to level the washer, run a test cycle, check for leaks under pressure, and watch the first full drain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hire a pro when valves are corroded, the drain overflows, the washer is moving to a new wall, the laundry is going upstairs, the receptacle needs electrical work, the floor bounces during spin, the unit is stacked, or finished walls must be opened. Also hire the appropriate trade when the project touches plumbing, electrical, gas, venting, or structural framing.

From a contractor’s point of view, the washer itself is often the easy part. The risk is hidden in the connections behind it. A $1,500 washer on a weak drain, old hose, or poorly supported upstairs floor can create a repair bill much larger than the installation.

Load Size Rules That Actually Work

Use pounds as a guide, but use movement as the final test. A proper load should look loose, not compacted. It should be able to roll in a front-loader or circulate in a top-loader. The machine should reach spin without repeated banging, walking, or unbalanced-load errors.

Keep these rules in rotation:

  • For compact washers, stay around 6 to 10 pounds unless the manual says otherwise.
  • For common 3.5 to 4.4 cubic-foot washers, expect about 10 to 16 pounds for normal loads.
  • For 4.5 to 5.0 cubic-foot washers, expect about 16 to 20 pounds when the load is loose.
  • For 5.0 cubic-foot-plus washers, 18 to 25 pounds may be possible, but bulky items still need room.
  • Quick wash is for smaller, lightly soiled loads, not a full family hamper.
  • Bulky and bedding cycles are for large loose items, not a packed drum of mixed heavy fabrics.
  • Delicate, waterproof, sanitize, and specialty cycles often have lower load limits.

The best laundry habit is consistent sizing. Once you know what 8, 12, or 18 pounds looks like in your own basket, you stop guessing. Your clothes rinse better, the washer works less, and the laundry room plumbing and floor system see less abuse.

Bottom Line

For most households, a full washer load is about 10 to 16 pounds of dry laundry in a standard full-size machine. Large-capacity washers can often handle 18 to 20 pounds, and extra-large models may handle up to about 25 pounds, but only when the load is loose enough to move.

Do not judge by whether the door closes. Judge by drum space, fabric movement, cycle type, and how the machine behaves during drain and spin. If bigger loads cause banging, overflow, leaks, soap residue, or musty laundry, the fix may be a smaller load, less detergent, or a closer look at the laundry room’s plumbing, electrical, and floor conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pounds of laundry is a full load?

A full load is usually about 10 to 16 pounds in a standard 3.5 to 4.4 cubic-foot washer. Large-capacity machines may handle 18 to 20 pounds, and some 5.0 cubic-foot-plus washers can handle about 20 to 25 pounds if the load is loose enough to tumble.

How full should a washing machine be?

For most normal loads, fill the drum loosely to about three-quarters full and leave roughly a hand-width of space at the top. If you have to push clothes down to close the lid or door, the washer is overloaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I convert washer cubic feet to pounds of laundry?

As a practical guide, 2.0 to 2.8 cubic feet handles about 6 to 10 pounds, 3.5 to 4.0 cubic feet handles about 10 to 14 pounds, 4.1 to 4.5 cubic feet handles about 12 to 16 pounds, and 5.0 cubic feet or more may handle about 18 to 25 pounds.

What size washer do I need for a king-size comforter?

Many king-size comforters need a washer around 5.0 cubic feet or larger. The key is not just weight; the comforter must have enough room to fold, roll, rinse, and spin without staying packed into one tight ball.

Is it better to do one large load or two smaller loads?

One properly sized large load is efficient. Two smaller loads are better when the big load would be packed tight, contains bulky bedding, mixes dense towels with lighter fabrics, or causes the washer to bang during spin.

Do I need a permit to move or add washer hookups?

Often, yes. Moving or adding laundry hookups can involve plumbing, drainage, venting, electrical work, wall repair, and sometimes structural considerations. Permit rules vary by city and county, so check local requirements before opening walls or relocating a laundry area.
