A pergola can turn an underused patio into a dining room, define a place to lounge, or create a garden destination. The best design starts with how you want to use the space, then brings together the structure, shade, planting, lighting and furniture to suit your home and site.
Start with how you want to use the space
Choose one main purpose before selecting a roof style or accessories. That makes it easier to decide where the pergola belongs, how much shade it needs and what should fit beneath it.
1. Create an outdoor dining room
Place a pergola near the kitchen or another convenient route from the house. Center a dining table beneath it and leave clear space around chairs for people to move in and out. A structure beside the home can make the transition feel natural; confirm that the wall and proposed attachment are suitable before choosing an attached design.
2. Build a freestanding garden retreat
Set a freestanding pergola apart from the house as a destination for coffee, reading or quiet conversation. A path, paving change or border planting can connect it to the rest of the yard without making it feel like an extension of the patio.

3. Define a patio lounge
Use the pergola’s footprint to mark a seating area within a larger patio. Arrange chairs or a sofa to face one another, and keep the main circulation route outside the furniture grouping so the zone feels inviting rather than crowded.
4. Frame an outdoor cooking area
A pergola can visually organize a grill or outdoor kitchen and give the cooking area a defined place in the landscape. Plan around the equipment, clearances, ventilation and any applicable fire or building requirements; do not assume that every roof, material or location is appropriate above cooking appliances.
5. Make a garden focal point
Place a pergola where it can anchor a view, such as at the end of a garden path or beside a planted border. Relate its scale and finish to nearby paving, trees and the house so it feels part of the landscape rather than an isolated object.
Use planting and screens to shape the space
Planting and compatible screens can make a pergola feel more sheltered. Consider the views you want to block, the light you want to keep and the amount of ongoing care the planting will need.
6. Train climbing plants over the frame
Let a suitable climber grow along the posts and overhead members for a softer, greener look. Choose plants for the local climate and the amount of sun, and account for mature growth and pruning access. Plant cover changes over time, so it is not an instant or uniform privacy solution.
7. Surround it with movable potted trees
Use large pots with trees or shrubs around the perimeter to create a flexible screen. You can reposition containers as the sun, seating arrangement or desired view changes. Check that the pots and plants suit the surface and that their mature size will not obstruct paths.
8. Add a compatible privacy screen
A side screen can make a seating area feel more enclosed or help reduce direct views from a neighboring space. Check that the screen is designed for the pergola model and that its placement will not conflict with access, airflow or the structure’s installation requirements.
9. Layer a screen with planting
Combine a screen on the side that needs privacy with planting around the remaining edges. The mix can soften the structure while preserving a more open outlook elsewhere; avoid blocking the route into the seating area with pots or dense growth.

Choose a structure and roof to suit the setting
Materials and roof configurations affect appearance, upkeep, shade, airflow and rain coverage. Product features vary by manufacturer and model, so check the specifications and installation documentation for the structure you are considering.
10. Choose a traditional wood kit
A wood pergola kit can suit a home or landscape where timber is already a prominent finish. Compare the kit’s dimensions and included components, and understand the finish and upkeep required for the particular wood and exposure. Pergola Depot, for example, offers attached and freestanding wood kits; its standard Big Kahuna range is listed in sizes from 8 × 8 to 20 × 20 feet. That is a product-specific range, not a general sizing guide.
11. Go contemporary with aluminum
An aluminum structure can create a cleaner, more contemporary visual direction. Compare its color and proportions with the home’s trim, windows and other outdoor finishes, and review the specific product’s roof, accessory and installation options rather than assuming all aluminum pergolas work alike.
12. Keep an open-sky feel with fixed slats
A fixed open or slatted roof keeps visible sky between the overhead members and can provide partial shade. The actual effect depends on the member spacing, orientation and sun angle; a fixed roof does not adjust as conditions change.

If you prefer a stable shade pattern, compare the spacing and coverage of fixed shade purlins. Heartland lists 50%, 75% and 90% shade configurations for its own products. Those are company-specific options, not universal shade ratings, so review the details for the exact model and site.
14. Add a retractable canopy
A canopy offers a way to change the amount of overhead cover when conditions or activities change. Trex lists canopy products among its pergola options. Confirm how the canopy operates, what it is made for and whether it is compatible with the structure you plan to use.
15. Consider adjustable motorized louvers
Motorized louvers can be adjusted to change sun exposure and airflow. Some vendors also make weather-protection claims for particular systems; treat those as product-specific claims, not a guarantee for other pergolas or every installation. Check the system’s operating and weather guidance before making it your rain solution.
16. Look at a more covered roof system
If rain coverage is a priority, compare more covered roof configurations, including products with integrated gutters. Trex lists a modular roof option with an integrated gutter. Confirm how the system handles runoff at your site and whether its roof type meets local planning and building requirements.

17. Use a wall pergola as an architectural accent
A smaller wall pergola or entryway treatment can add a defined architectural detail where a full outdoor room would be too large. Check the wall, attachment method and product instructions before selecting an attached model.

18. Make an evening gathering spot with lighting
Outdoor lighting can define the pergola after dark and make it more useful for evening meals or conversation. Decide where fixtures and wiring should go while planning the structure, and use lighting suitable for outdoor conditions and installation by an appropriately qualified person where required.
19. Plan for a fan or pendant light
If you want a fan or pendant fixture, decide on its location and support needs before installation. Heartland offers fan-mount kits for its products, but a fixture mount must match the pergola model and the load and electrical requirements of the installation. Do not assume that an overhead member can support a fixture without checking its documentation.
Make the design feel integrated with the home
20. Match the finish and scale to the house
Relate the pergola’s proportions and finish to the home rather than choosing by appearance alone. A structure that is too small may look disconnected from a broad patio; an oversized one can overwhelm a compact yard. Consider nearby doors, windows, rooflines, paving and planting together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute21. Treat an attached pergola as a construction decision
An attached pergola can create a close transition between indoor and outdoor living, but its connection to the house needs to suit the wall and structure. Check the product’s attachment instructions and local approval requirements before committing to the location or design.
22. Compare attached and freestanding formats
An attached format works beside a suitable wall; a freestanding format can be placed elsewhere in the yard if the site allows. Compare the available kit dimensions, included parts, anchoring instructions and installation requirements for the exact model. The right choice depends on the intended location and surface, not simply on appearance.
23. Layer only the features that support your plan
Combine shade, lighting, planting, screens and furniture around the activity you chose at the outset. A dining pergola may need table clearance and evening lighting; a garden retreat may benefit more from planting and a path. Adding features without a use in mind can make the space crowded and complicate installation.
Check the kit, anchoring and local rules
Product listings and local requirements are specific to the model, surface and jurisdiction. Confirm the details before ordering or beginning construction.

- Review what is included. Compare kit dimensions, components, accessory compatibility and installation instructions. Pergola Depot provides product-specific resources for its wood kits; Trex and Heartland also describe distinct product and accessory options.
- Confirm attachment and anchoring. The right fastener depends on the structure and the surface. Heartland says fasteners for attachment to a surface are not included because the appropriate fastener depends on that surface. Pergola Depot gives galvanized post bases and concrete anchors as an example for certain Big Kahuna installations on concrete. Follow the instructions for the exact product and site rather than applying either example universally.
- Check permits and planning locally. Requirements can depend on location, dimensions, height, whether the structure is attached, setbacks and runoff. The City of Armadale’s February 2025 information sheet defines a pergola as an open-sided structure with an open-weave permeable roof. In Armadale, it says a freestanding pergola under 20 m² and no taller than 2.4 m does not require a building permit, while an attached pergola requires one regardless of size and height. The sheet also flags planning approval, setbacks and runoff. These rules apply to that Western Australian municipality, not everywhere; contact your local authority for the rules that apply to your property.
- Verify roof and accessory compatibility. Shade systems, screens and fixture mounts are not automatically interchangeable across products. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility and installation documentation for the model you select.
