Position light fixtures around the work, surfaces and sightlines in a room—not by spacing them evenly and hoping for the best. Sketch the room first, decide whether each light is for ambient, task, accent or specialty use, then use common spacing and hanging-height rules as starting points. Fixture output, beam, room shape and mounting conditions can all change the final layout.
Plan the lighting around the room
Before marking fixture locations, measure the room and sketch its dimensions. Add counters, work surfaces, shelves, furniture and artwork or other focal points. For a room without an obvious focal point, The Home Depot suggests starting from the room’s center. Its recessed-lighting layout guide recommends deciding what each fixture needs to do before laying out recessed lights.
- Ambient: provides general light for moving around and using the room.
- Task: illuminates a work area, such as a counter.
- Accent: draws attention to artwork or another feature.
- Specialty: serves a particular location or condition, such as a wet area.
Philips Lighting’s residential lighting plan treats rooms as lighting zones, a useful reminder that one room may need more than one kind of light.
How far apart should recessed lights be?
A common starting estimate is to divide ceiling height by two to get the distance between recessed lights. The Home Depot and Lowe’s both present this as a spacing guideline—not a universal rule. For example, The Home Depot’s example for an 8-foot ceiling gives 4 feet between lights. Its guide gives 4–6 feet as an example for accent lighting.

Use those figures to sketch an initial layout, then adjust for the fixture’s beam and trim, the room’s use, and the positions of counters and focal areas. A uniform grid may miss the work surface or create unwanted bright spots if it ignores how the room is actually used.
For kitchen counters, The Home Depot recommends aiming the light toward the counter edge so the light falls in front of the person standing there. Its guide suggests roughly 14–18 inches between recessed canisters and cabinets; treat that as source-specific guidance and check the actual cabinet dimensions and fixture before marking cutouts.

How high should pendants hang?
For a pendant over a kitchen island or dining table, Philips Hue gives a typical clearance of 30–36 inches from the surface to the bottom of the fixture. Measure from the actual counter or tabletop to the lowest part of the pendant, and consider whether it blocks views or gets in the way of the work below.
Spacing multiple pendants
For a row of pendants, Philips Hue’s FAQ suggests centering the middle pendant, placing pendant centers 30–32 inches apart, and keeping the outer pendants 6 inches from the table or counter edges. Its separate pendant-light guide gives a broader 24–36-inch spacing range. These are design starting points, not a single exact standard: account for the surface length, fixture size and sightlines when deciding the final positions.

Hallways and open areas
Philips Hue’s FAQ suggests keeping the bottom of a pendant at least 7 feet above the floor in a hallway or open area. Check clearance along the route people actually use, including where they enter or pass beneath the fixture.
Use more than one lighting layer
Recessed downlights can support task lighting, but they should not automatically be expected to do every job in a room. YourHome, an Australian Government resource, cautions that downlights alone may create bright pools on floors while leaving ceilings dark. YourHome’s lighting guidance and Natural Resources Canada’s Home Lighting Design Guide Pocket Book both advise against relying on recessed lighting for every layer. Combine general light with task or accent sources where the room’s activities and features call for them.

Choose recessed housings for the installation
Housing choice depends on the ceiling and location, not just the look of the trim. The Home Depot recommends IC-rated new-construction housing where fixtures are installed around insulation, and remodel housing where the ceiling is inaccessible. Its guide also advises selecting housing for the location and trim type; wet locations such as showers may require fixtures specifically rated for that use. Confirm the individual fixture’s listing and installation instructions rather than assuming a general recessed light is suitable.

Philips Hue’s installation FAQ says to switch off power at the main circuit breaker and use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm wires are not live before touching them. It also describes attaching a mounting bracket to a ceiling junction box and securing it to support the pendant’s weight. Follow the complete instructions for the fixture, confirm the ceiling box and support are suitable, and comply with local electrical requirements. Manufacturer instructions are not a substitute for assessing whether the installation is appropriate to do yourself.

For recessed lights, confirm the housing is suitable for insulation, ceiling access and the room’s conditions before cutting openings. A kit can group materials for installing multiple fixtures, but it does not remove the need to verify ratings, layout and safe installation requirements.
