Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The most effective way to get rid of silverfish is to combine moisture control, cleaning and decluttering, sealing likely entry and hiding places, and trapping. Start with those steps for occasional sightings or a light infestation; consider a labeled, targeted pesticide only when activity is substantial or persists. Traps can catch and monitor insects, but they do not fix the damp conditions or hidden harborages that let them remain.
Find where silverfish are active
Inspect dark, undisturbed areas where moisture, food, and shelter may overlap: bathrooms, areas beneath sinks, laundry rooms, basements, closets, bookcases, storage spaces, and gaps around pipes or conduits. Look for live insects as well as feeding damage to paper or fabric, contaminated food, cast skins, and fecal spots. If you are not sure the insects are silverfish, the National Pesticide Information Center recommends contacting a county Extension office for identification: NPIC’s silverfish and firebrat guide.
Remove moisture, food, and hiding places
Fix water sources and dry damp rooms
Repair leaking pipes and faucets, address condensation, ventilate bathrooms, and keep shower and laundry areas dry. A dehumidifier may help in a closed, persistently damp space, but it is not a substitute for fixing a leak. There is no single household humidity target established by the sources cited here.
Clean and reduce clutter
Regularly remove dust and debris, and periodically clear out closets, cabinets, and storage containers. Reduce stacks of paper, books, magazines, cardboard, and fabrics where practical; store dry foods and pet food in tightly closed containers. Seal openings around pipes and conduits where feasible, and move outdoor debris or lumber piles away from the structure when possible. Moisture, food, and shelter should be addressed together: sanitation alone may not eliminate an established infestation.

Trap and monitor remaining insects
Place sticky traps near sightings, in corners, or along edges where insects are likely to travel. A simple jar trap can also help: wrap masking tape around the outside of a glass jar so silverfish can climb up, then rely on the smooth interior to keep them from climbing back out. Check traps periodically and use captures to see whether activity continues after you have dried and cleaned the area. Trapping is physical control and monitoring, not a remedy for moisture or hidden harborages. The cited guidance supports the jar method but does not establish that any particular branded commercial trap works better.
UC IPM describes traps alongside other nonchemical measures in its silverfish and firebrat guidance; Penn State Extension also discusses control options in its bristletails guide.

When to consider pesticide—and what to avoid
For occasional insects or light infestations, begin with moisture reduction and physical control. If the infestation is substantial or persistent, a targeted spray or dust may be an option, but use only a product whose label covers both silverfish and the intended application site. Follow all label directions and warnings, including instructions for keeping it away from food, water, drains, children, and pets. Some products have restricted uses; Canadian readers should check for a Health Canada Pest Control Products number. UC IPM outlines targeted applications in cracks, crevices, and suitable voids; Virginia Cooperative Extension also advises using pest-control products according to their labels: Virginia Cooperative Extension’s silverfish and firebrat guide.
Do not treat foggers as a shortcut. UC IPM does not recommend them, and North Carolina State Extension notes that fogging may not reach insects beneath insulation or stored materials: NC State Extension’s silverfish and firebrat guide. Baits are not a dependable default either: UC IPM says silverfish and firebrats tend not to feed on many baits, though advice may differ for particular products and settings.

Choose an approach that fits the infestation
| Method | Best role | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture correction, cleaning, decluttering, and sealing | Foundation for control and prevention | Sanitation alone may not eliminate an established infestation. (UC IPM: Silverfish and Firebrats; Penn State Extension: Bristletails) |
| Jar or sticky traps | Capture occasional insects and monitor activity | Do not correct moisture, food, or hidden harborage. (UC IPM: Silverfish and Firebrats; NPIC: Silverfish and Firebrats) |
| Labeled, targeted spray or dust | Possible aid for a larger or persistent infestation | Must match the pest and use site on the label; effectiveness depends on reaching hiding places and correcting conditions. (UC IPM: Silverfish and Firebrats; Health Canada: Silverfish and Firebrats) |
| Professional pest management | Widespread, persistent, or hard-to-locate activity | The cited NPIC guidance does not establish a particular provider, price, or guaranteed outcome. (NPIC) |
In deciding whether to escalate, consider how widespread activity is, whether you can locate its source, whether dampness remains, and whether hidden voids are accessible. Choose methods that address the conditions supporting the insects, not only the ones visible on a trap.

UC IPM says a properly and thoroughly applied insecticide may show results in a few weeks; this is general guidance, not a guarantee. If control has not occurred in 2 or 3 weeks, the insects may be coming from untreated areas or secluded harborages. Inspect further, look again for water sources, and consider professional help if the population is large or difficult to locate. See UC IPM’s silverfish and firebrat guidance.
