For a garden that fills in quickly, choose perennials that suit your sunlight, soil moisture, drainage and hardiness zone—not just a plant’s reputation for vigorous growth. These 12 recommendations offer a range of heights, flowers and foliage, but they are not a scientifically ranked list: no shared growth-rate trial or statistic establishes which is fastest. Even vigorous perennials may need time to settle in; University of Maryland Extension says a lush, full appearance can take around three years.
12 perennials that can help a garden fill in
The figures below are the reported mature sizes and hardiness ranges in the March 4, 2026 Martha Stewart article “12 Fast-Growing Perennials for a Garden That Fills In Fast.” They are starting points, not guarantees for every cultivar or local site. Check the plant label and local guidance before buying, especially where a size is flagged for verification.
| Perennial | Reported USDA zones | Reported mature size | Light and soil | Garden interest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leopard plant (Farfugium japonicum) | 7–10 | 1–4 ft tall × 1–3 ft wide | Part to full shade; mildly moist soil | Glossy foliage and yellow spring flower spikes. |
| Rose mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) | 5–9 | 3–7 ft tall × 2–4 ft wide | Full to partial sun; consistently moist soil | New growth can rapidly fill its form after spring emergence; a candidate for rain gardens. |
| Red hibiscus (Hibiscus coccineus) | 5–9 | 6–8 ft tall × 2–3 ft wide | Full sun to partial shade; moist to wet soil | Red summer flowers; cut back in late fall. |
| Candy corn plant (Cuphea micropetala) | 8–11 | 1–4 ft tall × 1–2 ft wide | Full sun; moist, well-draining soil | Orange-red flowers in fall; cut back in late winter. |
| Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium maculatum) | 4–8 | 4–8 ft tall × 2–4 ft wide | Full sun to partial shade; moist to occasionally wet soil | Pink-purple summer-to-fall flowers; attracts pollinators and can be divided. |
| Heuchera ‘Ginger Peach’ | 4–9 | Not stated reliably: the source prints 4–8 ft tall × 2–4 ft wide, a figure that conflicts with its description of a heuchera foliage plant. Verify the cultivar’s size with the nursery before planning its position. | Source lists full sun to partial shade and moist to occasionally wet soil; verify against the plant label. | Foliage described as changing from peach to coral, copper and rose. |
| Rose verbena (Verbena canadensis) | 6–10 | 18 in tall × 12–24 in wide | Full sun; well-drained soil | Low mound with quick spread; spring-to-fall flowers are described as short-lived. |
| Shasta daisy ‘Mt. Hood’ (Leucanthemum) | 4–10 | 16 in tall × 16–20 in wide | Full sun; fertile, well-drained soil | Vigorous mound that reblooms through the season. |
| Agastache ‘Pink Pearl’ | 4–10 | 16 in tall × 16 in wide | Full sun; fertile, well-drained soil | Compact pink flower spikes that attract pollinators; the source says it reaches full size by July. |
| Coneflower ‘Kismet Raspberry’ (Echinacea) | 4–10 | 8 in tall × 16 in wide | Full sun; fertile, well-drained soil | Raspberry flowers described as lasting from early summer until first frost. |
| Russian sage | 4–9 | 3–4 ft tall × 4 ft wide | Full sun; well-drained soil; light watering once established | Silvery-lavender blooms; fills in after establishment. |
| Coreopsis | 2–8 | 12–24 in tall × 1–18 in wide | Full to part sun; sandy or rocky, well-drained soil | Long-flowering yellow daisies; suitable for borders and containers. |
How to choose for your garden
Start with the conditions you have rather than trying to make a plant adapt to a mismatched spot. Compare your local hardiness conditions with the range for the exact plant or cultivar, then check how much direct summer sun the site receives, whether water drains freely, and whether the soil stays moist. Also account for mature height and spread: a vigorous perennial planted without enough room may crowd its neighbours, and repeated trimming to restrain a plant that outgrows its space can affect its health and flowering.
- For a damp, sunny area, rose mallow, red hibiscus or Joe Pye weed may be worth considering, subject to their hardiness and room requirements.
- For a sunny, dry, well-drained spot, Russian sage or coreopsis may be a better starting point.
- For shade, leopard plant is the listed option suited to part to full shade.
- For a smaller garden, compare mature spread as carefully as height; a low-growing plant may still expand substantially across its bed.
These are matches based on the reported preferences, not guarantees for a particular garden. A range of heights, foliage textures and flowering periods can add structure and seasonal interest to a mixed border. Named cultivars can make traits more predictable, but confirm the plant identity and suitability locally.

Help new perennials establish
Planting well and keeping up with first-season watering support establishment, but they do not turn perennial growth into an instant result. University of Maryland Extension notes that a well-established, lush appearance can take around three years.

- Choose workable timing. Maryland Extension says perennials can generally be planted when they are available and the soil is workable, while allowing time to establish before flowering or cold weather. Iowa State’s spring or early-fall timing advice is specific to Iowa; for fall planting there, allow at least four to six weeks before the ground freezes. Use local guidance elsewhere.
- Prepare a wide, shallow hole. Iowa State recommends a planting hole at least twice as wide as the pot, but no deeper than the container soil level.
- Set the plant at the right depth. Loosen circling roots if present, position the plant at the container’s soil level, then backfill.
- Water and mulch. Water after planting and apply 3–4 inches of mulch around the plant, keeping the planting depth as recommended.
- Keep new plants watered through their first growing season. Adjust to weather and the plant’s moisture needs rather than assuming established-plant care applies immediately.
