You can make a temporary poinsettia tree from cut bracts and a simple support frame, or display living potted poinsettias as a small tree-like arrangement. These are different projects: neither the craft frame nor a group of pots turns a poinsettia into a trained tree-form plant. That living form is a specialized, labor-intensive grower product.
Choose the kind of poinsettia tree you want

Make a temporary cut-bract poinsettia tree
The following frame concept comes from a craft tutorial, not a universally tested specification. Its materials and proportions are a starting point; adjust the frame to the planter and make sure it cannot tip.
Materials
- A planter and a wrapped straw wreath frame sized to sit over it
- Roughly 10–12 bamboo sticks or willow supports
- Fine twigs for weaving around the supports
- One large poinsettia or several smaller ones, with material intended for cutting
- Potting compost if following the tutorial’s planter setup
The tutorial suggests one or more poinsettias but moves between a decorative frame and planting in the planter. Keep the distinction clear: cut bracts make a temporary decoration; planting a potted poinsettia in the base makes a living display, not a trained tree. Gardeners’ World craft tutorial
Build and decorate the frame
- Set the wrapped straw wreath frame flat. Insert the bamboo sticks or willow supports at even intervals to form an upright framework.
- Fill the planter about two-thirds full with potting compost, as the tutorial describes. Set the prepared frame over the planter and check that it sits securely before decorating.
- Weave fine twigs around the supports until the base is concealed. Recheck stability; reposition the supports or use a broader, heavier planter if the display wobbles.
- Add cut poinsettia bracts to the frame for a temporary decoration. If you prefer living plants, arrange their pots in or at the planter opening instead of treating them as cut material, and keep the pots able to drain.
Use living poinsettias in a tree-like display
For the simplest living version, arrange potted poinsettias at different heights in a stable display. Keep each plant in a pot with drainage rather than sealing it inside a compost-filled planter. Remove decorative foil or pierce it so excess water cannot collect around the pot. If you want an actual tree-form specimen, look for a nursery-grown plant rather than trying to train an ordinary holiday poinsettia into one. NC State Extension recommends cultivars with strong stems and large bracts. It also cautions that large tree-form plants need large pots to reduce tipping risk and must be transported carefully. Keep living poinsettias healthy through the holidays
Light, temperature, and placement
- Give the plant bright natural light. The U.S. Botanic Garden advises avoiding direct sun; University of Maryland Extension also recommends bright natural light.

Water and drainage
- Check the soil surface and water when it feels dry.
- Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain freely.
- Do not leave the pot standing in water. Remove or pierce decorative foil if it traps drainage.

Choose and handle poinsettias thoughtfully
When selecting a living plant, look for full foliage and undamaged bracts. Keep poinsettias where pets cannot chew them. Colorado State University Extension describes them as mildly toxic to cats and dogs and says eating very large quantities can cause stomach upset. The milky sap can irritate skin and eyes, particularly for people with latex allergy; avoid touching your face while handling the plant and wash your hands afterward.
