The expected reading depends on the conductor’s material, length, cross-sectional area and temperature—and on whether you are measuring one wire, a full circuit path or wiring still connected to other circuit paths. A number in ohms is meaningful only when those details and the test method are known.
Why wiring has no universal resistance value
Resistance is measured in ohms (Ω). For a given conductor material and temperature, a longer wire has more resistance, while a larger cross-sectional area has less. Temperature and the conductor’s material also affect the result. Fluke summarizes these influences in its guide to resistance.
That is why the same meter reading can mean different things on different wires. A short, thick conductor and a long, thin one should not be expected to read alike. Nor can a reading be assessed without knowing whether it covers just one conductor or a complete current path, which may include a line-and-return pair, connections or parallel circuit paths.
What changes the reading
- Material: Different conductor materials have different resistance.
- Length: Resistance increases with conductor length. Distinguish a one-way run from the total length of the path being measured.
- Cross-sectional area: For the same material and length, a larger area means lower resistance.
- Temperature: Resistance changes as a conductor’s temperature changes.
- Path and connections: Test points, connected equipment and parallel routes can alter what the meter measures.
- Probe and lead contact: At very low resistance, meter leads and the quality of probe contact can contribute to the displayed value.
To compare two readings, first check that they involve the same material, conductor size, temperature, path length, test points and circuit state. A connected circuit may offer parallel paths, so an in-circuit reading may not represent the resistance of a single wire by itself.

Contextual examples—not pass/fail limits
Published figures illustrate how strongly resistance depends on context. They are not interchangeable and do not establish a universal acceptable range.
| Example | What the figure describes |
|---|---|
| 60 Ω | Fluke’s example calculates resistance as 240 V ÷ 4 A for an electric-heater circuit. It is a circuit calculation, not a normal resistance value for a wire. Publication year is not stated in the retrieved source. Source. |
| 13.3 mΩ/m for 1.5 mm² and 8 mΩ/m for 2.5 mm² flexible cable, at 20 °C | IET figures for protective conductors in the appliance-supply-cord context, published in 2006. The cable type, temperature reference and age of the source matter; these are not general limits for wiring. Source. |
| 12.1 mΩ/m for 1.5 mm² and 4.61 mΩ/m for 4.0 mm² conductors, with a 20 °C reference | Values used in an IET worked example about resistance readings for a ring-final circuit test, published in 2022. They describe that example, not a general acceptance threshold. Source. |
For a circuit supplying a load, the IET’s 2023 marine-wiring article describes calculating voltage drop using conductor resistance per metre, design current and run length. It also gives the temperature relationship R = R₀ [1 + 0.00373 (t − 20)] for the resistance values discussed in that marine-wiring context. Neither that relationship nor the examples above should be applied as a universal rule for every cable or installation. Read the IET article.

- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Resistance, continuity and insulation are different checks
A resistance measurement gives a value for the electrical path between the meter probes under the conditions of the test. A continuity check asks whether a low-resistance path is present; a continuity beep reflects the particular meter’s behavior and does not show that an installation has passed all required tests. Insulation resistance is a separate test concerned with insulation, not the resistance of the conductor itself.
For fixed electrical installations, a general multimeter reading is not a compliance decision. IET guidance discusses protective-bonding continuity measurement under BS 7671:2018 Regulation 643.2.1 and separately addresses insulation-resistance testing. Electrical Safety First describes live testing as part of assessing whether an installation is suitable for continued service. The required checks depend on the applicable jurisdiction and standard; fixed-wiring inspection and testing should be carried out by a competent person using the correct procedure. How to measure resistance safely
A digital multimeter or ohmmeter can measure resistance, but the circuit must be de-energized before making a resistance measurement. Fluke’s resistance guide explains the basic measurement; its electrical-safety guidance warns against testing resistance on an energized circuit. Resistance measurement and multimeter safety.
- Make the circuit safe. Isolate it from its supply and verify it is de-energized using an appropriate method. Do not use the meter’s resistance mode on a live circuit.
- Identify the path. Establish whether the test is across one conductor, a line-and-return path, a protective conductor or connected wiring. Consider whether parallel paths remain.
- Set the meter to resistance. Connect the probes at the intended test points and allow the reading to settle.
- Interpret the result in context. Account for conductor material, size, length, temperature, connections and the meter leads. For very low values, lead and contact resistance can materially affect the result.
If your concern is fixed wiring, do not treat a continuity beep or an isolated ohm reading as proof that the installation is safe or compliant. Use the appropriate standards-based testing procedure and a competent person.

What you need to know to assess a particular reading
To estimate or evaluate a specific reading, gather the conductor material and cross-sectional area, the measured path’s length, its temperature, the test points, whether equipment or parallel routes remain connected, and the meter and test method used. Also identify the test’s purpose and the wiring standard that applies in your location. Without those details, the title question has no single numeric answer—and a reading alone cannot diagnose a fault.
