For a move, use a hand truck or utility cart to roll boxes along a route it can safely handle instead of carrying every box by hand. If a curb or low threshold blocks that route, a suitable curb ramp may help the wheeled load pass without lifting a fully loaded hand truck over the obstacle. A ramp is not automatically safe just because it is homemade or fits the gap: its capacity, fit and secure placement matter.
Choose the right way to move boxes
OSHA identifies hand trucks and utility carts as transport devices for moving materials. Pick equipment that suits both the load and the route; avoid overloading it or stacking boxes so high that they become unstable or block your view. OSHA’s materials-handling guidance discusses visibility, force and terrain as factors in moving loads: Materials Handling – Pushing, Pulling and Carrying.
Hand truck or utility cart?
A hand truck can be useful for a stack of boxes that can be kept stable on its toe plate. A utility cart may suit several boxes that can be contained on its platform. In either case, keep the load controlled and your path visible. Choose wheels for the route: OSHA says pneumatic wheels perform better on rough, uneven surfaces, while solid hard wheels are generally preferable on concrete and other hard surfaces.
When a curb ramp can help
A curb or low threshold can interrupt an otherwise rollable route. OSHA’s Beverage Delivery – Hand Trucks guidance recommends: “Provide and use curb ramps.” It describes curb ramps as a way to move hand trucks over uneven walking surfaces without lifting and pulling fully loaded hand trucks over a curb. This workplace guidance supports the use case; it is not a residential engineering assessment or approval of a homemade ramp. See OSHA’s hand-truck guidance.

Check the route and the equipment
- Confirm the ramp is designed for the obstacle and the wheeled equipment, and that its instructions and rated capacity cover your actual use.
- Make sure it sits securely and cannot shift under the load. OSHA’s warehousing guidance addresses securing portable dockboards and staying clear of platform, ramp and dock edges: Warehousing – Hazards and Solutions.
- Keep the load stable and visible as it crosses the ramp; do not let boxes obscure your path.
- Use equipment in good condition and suited to the surface. OSHA’s 2014 manual-handling publication says wheeled devices used on ramped surfaces should have easy-to-operate hand brakes: Manual Materials Handling – Carts, Hand Trucks, Pallet Jacks and Lift Tables.
Why an incline can increase the effort
A ramp avoids carrying a load over a curb, but moving a loaded hand truck uphill still takes effort. OSHA notes that pushing up an incline can require a worker to lower the load angle, increasing the weight the person must lift and stress on the shoulders, back and legs. If the route feels difficult to control, stop and reassess the load, equipment or route rather than forcing it uphill.
Do not assume a homemade ramp is safe
The cited guidance does not specify materials, dimensions, slope, securement or load rating for a DIY moving ramp. It therefore cannot establish that a board or improvised platform is safe. Use a ramp made for the intended application, follow its instructions and capacity rating, and do not treat an ordinary curb ramp as suitable for stairs.

When lifting is still necessary
Some items or parts of a move may not be practical to roll. Reduce what must be lifted and plan the lift rather than relying on a generic weight cutoff. The CDC/NIOSH Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation considers task variables including object weight, hand location, travel distance, asymmetry, frequency, duration and grip quality; it is a tool for estimating lifting demands, not a household injury statistic or a universal safe-weight limit.
