Fix the moisture problem at the same time: mold can return if the wood stays wet. Wear appropriate protective equipment, and get professional advice when growth is extensive, the wood is deeply affected, water was contaminated, or the item is valuable.
First decide whether the wood is suitable for surface cleaning
Wood is not uniformly nonporous. Mold can grow into pores, empty spaces and crevices, which can make complete removal difficult or impossible. The right response depends on the finish and condition of the wood, whether it is still wet, and whether moisture or mold is hidden behind it. CDC identifies wood as a material mold can grow on; EPA cautions that porous materials may not be completely cleanable. CDC: Mold; EPA: Mold Course Chapter 4.
- Sound, finished wood with limited surface growth: Clean with mild detergent and clean water, then dry completely.
- Wet or water-damaged wood: Deal with the water source and dry it promptly. If paneling is wet behind the surface, EPA advises prying it away from the wall so it can dry.
- Deeply affected, damaged or hard-to-reach wood: Repeated surface scrubbing may not remove mold from within the material. Consider removal or specialist assessment.
Protect yourself and others before cleanup
CDC recommends a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator, gloves made of non-latex, vinyl, nitrile or rubber, and goggles that fully protect the eyes and keep out dust and small particles. Open windows or doors for fresh air when using cleaning products. CDC: Mold Clean Up Guidelines and Recommendations.
People with allergies, immune suppression, underlying lung disease, asthma or COPD should not take part in mold cleanup, according to CDC. Keep them away from the work area.

Clean limited mold from finished wood
- Stop the moisture. Repair leaks and other water problems before they keep feeding mold. EPA identifies moisture control as the key to mold control. EPA: A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home.
- Remove the visible mold. For treated or finished wood, use mild detergent and clean water. Scrub the affected hard surface rather than relying on a chemical to kill mold in place. EPA’s general guidance likewise calls for detergent and water on hard surfaces. EPA: What are the basic mold cleanup steps?; EPA: Mold Course Chapter 4.
- Dry the wood completely. EPA recommends removing moisture promptly and using dehumidifiers, fans and gentle heat to dry wood. Take care with heat on hardwood floors. Dry water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours where possible to help prevent mold growth; this is EPA prevention guidance, not a guarantee that mold will not develop. - Check that the underlying problem is resolved. Do not paint or caulk a moldy surface. Clean and dry it first, and address the source of moisture. EPA: A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home.
Cleaning and drying may not restore the wood’s original appearance. If discoloration remains or mold appears to extend into the material, avoid assuming another round of surface cleaning will solve it.
Should you use bleach on moldy wood?
Bleach is not EPA’s routine recommendation for mold cleanup. EPA emphasizes removing mold because dead mold can still cause allergic reactions; killing it alone does not replace removal or moisture control. EPA: Should I use bleach to clean up mold?

CDC says bleach or dish detergent may be used for home cleanup and sets a limit of no more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water. That is a CDC use limit, not a requirement to use bleach. Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser. CDC: Mold Clean Up Guidelines and Recommendations.

EPA says residents can generally handle most moldy areas smaller than about 10 square feet—roughly a 3 ft. by 3 ft. patch—by following its guidance. This is an approximate DIY threshold, not a guarantee that every smaller job is suitable for DIY cleanup. Consider an experienced mold cleanup contractor if mold covers more than 10 square feet or there is substantial water damage. For sewage or other contaminated water, EPA’s flood guidance calls for an experienced professional. EPA: Mold Cleanup in Your Home.

For expensive or sentimental wood items, consult a restoration specialist rather than risking further damage during a cleanup attempt. EPA advises checking references and relevant professional affiliations when choosing a contractor. EPA: Mold Cleanup in Your Home.
