For bouquets built around a few especially large, shapely flowers, start with hybrid tea roses. Grandifloras are another good option, while English and some shrub roses can offer a fuller, old-fashioned look. Floribundas bring abundant clusters rather than the largest individual blooms. The name of the rose group is only a starting point: size, stem length, fragrance and cutting performance vary by cultivar.
Which rose types work best for large-flowered bouquets?
These five groups offer different ways to create a bouquet with visual impact. They are not all equivalent botanical classes: hybrid tea, grandiflora and floribunda are modern rose classes; “English rose” is a popular breeder-associated grouping, and shrub rose is a broad horticultural category.
| Rose group | What stands out in a bouquet | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid tea | Large, usually double flowers on long, upright stems; often fragrant | A few prominent, individually shaped roses |
| Grandiflora | Hybrid-tea-like flowers, singly or in small clusters on long stems | Large blooms with somewhat more abundance |
| English rose | Often sought for a full, old-fashioned flower form; characteristics vary by cultivar | A romantic, opulent look, after checking the specific rose |
| Shrub rose | A broad group with varied flower forms and plant habits | Only when the chosen cultivar has suitable blooms and cutting stems |
| Floribunda | Double flowers in large clusters, generally smaller individually than hybrid tea flowers | Spray-like clusters and a full, massed effect |
1. Hybrid tea roses: the clearest choice for big individual blooms
Hybrid teas are the strongest match when the goal is a bouquet centered on a handful of showy roses. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes them as having large, usually double and often fragrant flowers on long, upright stems, and recommends them for flower arranging. Oregon State University Extension likewise identifies them as long-stemmed, often fragrant and excellent for cutting, noting they are the type most commonly used by florists.
The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources gives a typical hybrid tea bloom-size range of 3.5–5.5 inches. That is a class-level published range, not a guarantee for every cultivar or growing condition; the publication year is not shown in the retrieved metadata.

2. Grandiflora roses: large flowers with a clustered option
Grandifloras bridge the look of a large, individual rose and a more abundant stem. Oregon State describes their flowers as similar to hybrid teas, carried on long stems and often in clusters; Iowa State University says they appear singly or in small clusters. Oregon State also notes that they are scented and suitable for cutting.
UC Agriculture and Natural Resources gives a 2.5–3.5-inch range for grandiflora clusters or single blooms. Treat this as a general published range rather than a cultivar-specific promise; the source’s year is not displayed in the retrieved metadata.

3. English roses: full, old-fashioned forms, but not a formal class
“English rose” is a recognizable breeder-associated group made popular through David Austin’s work, but Illinois Extension notes that it is not an official rose class. The label may help describe the look a gardener wants, but it does not establish a uniform bloom size, fragrance or performance as a cut flower.
The RHS frames the choice as one between the large, opulent blooms associated with an old-fashioned rose and the more refined form of a hybrid tea. If buying or growing an English rose for bouquets, assess the named cultivar’s flower form and stem suitability rather than assuming every rose under that label will have huge blooms.

4. Shrub roses: check the cultivar, not just the category
Shrub rose covers a wide range of plant forms and characteristics. Illinois Extension includes English and landscape roses among shrub roses, so the category can encompass some full-flowered choices, but the label alone does not mean a plant will produce especially large blooms or long cutting stems.
For a bouquet garden, confirm the individual cultivar’s flower size, stem length, fragrance and local suitability. A shrub rose may be a good choice for garden display without being the best source of long-stemmed bouquet flowers.

5. Floribunda roses: smaller flowers, more cluster volume
Floribundas are useful when abundance matters more than maximizing the size of each flower. The RHS describes them as carrying double, usually cup-shaped flowers in large clusters. Oregon State and Colorado State University Extension note that floribunda flowers are generally smaller than hybrid tea blooms and appear in clusters.
Use floribundas for a spray-like, massed effect or as a complement to larger focal roses. They should not be presented as the top choice for the largest individual bloom.

How to choose roses for cutting
If you are buying a finished bouquet
Look for hybrid teas when you want a few large, distinct flowers. Grandifloras can offer a similar look with single flowers or small clusters, while floribundas contribute clustered volume. Ask the florist about the varieties used if exact flower size or fragrance matters; a group name does not identify the cultivar.
If you are choosing plants to grow
Compare the named cultivar’s flower size and form, stem length, fragrance, repeat flowering, mature plant size, hardiness and disease resistance. Local growing conditions and cultivar choice affect performance, so a class-level description cannot guarantee a particular bouquet result. The RHS recommends considering site conditions, eventual plant size, flower color and scent when selecting roses, and suggests seeing and smelling plants in bloom where possible, especially when fragrance is important.
When ordering plants, search for hybrid tea rose plants or large-flowered roses for cutting, then verify the cultivar’s hardiness for your area, mature size and disease resistance with the seller or a local horticultural source. The available class-level guidance supports no reliable named-cultivar top-five ranking.
