To prevent brush marks, use an applicator suited to the specific finish, work with the grain, and lightly tip off each section while it is still wet. Avoid overworking the coating or brushing back into an area that has begun to dry. If marks have dried into the finish, let it dry thoroughly, sand the surface smooth, remove the dust, and apply another coat according to the product directions.
Why brush marks appear
Brush marks form when a coating does not flow and level into a smooth film. Sherwin-Williams identifies several possible causes: brushing paint again after it has started to dry, overworking it, using an unsuitable applicator, applying too thin a film, coating a hot or sunlit surface, or applying finish over a very porous surface. Follow the product’s instructions for applicator, film build, and conditions; prime or seal porous surfaces where the product directions call for it. Sherwin-Williams explains brush and roller mark causes and repairs.
How to prevent brush marks
Prepare the surface
Start with a clean, ready surface and remove sanding dust before applying finish. If sanding between coats, follow the coating instructions and check an inconspicuous spot to confirm the finish is ready to sand. Minwax’s clear wood finish guide covers preparation and application.
Match the brush to the finish
Choose a quality applicator that is compatible with the particular coating. Brush material is not a universal rule: for its oil-based varnish or polyurethane example, WOOD Magazine recommends a tapered China-bristle brush. That recommendation should not automatically be applied to other finishes. Minwax likewise advises using a suitable quality brush. See WOOD Magazine’s answer, published March 17, 2021, and the Minwax guide.

Apply with the grain and tip off
Lay down controlled strokes with the grain, then lightly pass the bristles over the wet surface to even it out. WOOD Magazine Staff advises: “To minimize brush marks and bubbles, ‘tip off’ each section of your project at a 45-degree angle and lightly run the bristles over the entire length of the wood.” Avoid repeated strokes once the coating begins to lose its wet working state. Minwax also recommends applying with the grain and lightly tipping off to reduce marks and bubbles.
Work within the finish’s conditions
Where possible, avoid coating hot surfaces or working in direct sunlight, both of which can contribute to poor leveling. Follow the specific product’s temperature, humidity, film-build, and drying directions rather than assuming one set of conditions suits every finish. Sherwin-Williams discusses these factors in its guidance on brush and roller marks.

Follow product-specific application instructions
Instructions can differ even among clear finishes. Rust-Oleum’s guidance for its water-based Parks Pro Finisher polyurethane says not to shake or over-brush the product and recommends smooth, level pulling strokes with the grain. Treat that as guidance for this product, not a general method for all water-based finishes. Rust-Oleum’s product instructions provide the details.
How to fix brush marks that have dried
- Let the coating dry thoroughly. Do not sand or recoat while it is still soft.
- Check that it is ready to sand. Test an inconspicuous area if you are unsure, as Minwax recommends.
- Sand the marked area smooth in line with the coating’s instructions, then remove all sanding dust.
- Apply another coat using the product’s stated application method, film build, and drying conditions.
This repair sequence follows Sherwin-Williams’ advice to dry, sand, and repaint and Minwax’s guidance to confirm readiness before sanding.

Should you thin the finish?
Do not thin a coating as a universal fix for brush marks; first check its label or technical data. WOOD Magazine’s March 17, 2021 answer gives a particular recipe for its standard varnish or polyurethane example: a first coat thinned 50/50 with mineral spirits, followed by a coat of 25% mineral spirits and 75% varnish. Those proportions are specific to that oil-based case, not a general formula. By contrast, Rust-Oleum says not to thin its water-based Parks Pro Finisher polyurethane. Consult the instructions for the exact product you are using.
