The Boxed-up Backgammon Board is a compact folding board project from WOOD magazine, plan DP-00908. It uses mahogany, maple and walnut veneer for its geometric playing surface and forms two matching board halves by splitting an enclosed box. The published plan gives dimensions and material types, but consult the full plan for its cut list and build sequence.
What the Boxed-Up Backgammon Board plan makes
This is a hinged, boxed game set: it opens into a playing board and closes into a case. WOOD magazine’s plan cover describes building an enclosed box and splitting it to create matching game-board halves. The cover highlights stack-cutting veneer for repeated patterns and joining veneer to produce straight glue lines.
Those are project features, not a complete set of construction instructions. The published information available here does not establish the full sequence, cut list, veneer thicknesses, quantities or complete tool requirements. Use the full plan for those details rather than estimating them from the finished dimensions.

Choosing a paper or PDF plan
Listings for this project show different access formats. WoodworkersWorkshop lists paper and PDF options and describes its PDF as including patterns, building instructions and finishing guidance; it also notes printable pattern templates. Woodcraft lists a paper plan and says materials are not included. Confirm the selected format and current listing details before ordering.
A printable template may suit a maker who wants to work from patterns at the bench; a paper copy may be preferable if you do not want to print or manage a digital file. Neither plan format includes the wood and veneer, and the available listing information does not establish a universal materials package.

Is this board the right size for your use?
Open, the board measures 20 7/8 × 17 in. (about 53 × 43 cm), making it a compact home or portable-style project. A standard backgammon set uses 24 points and 15 checkers per player; dice, cups and a doubling cube are also common equipment.
That footprint is smaller than the conditional board range in the World Backgammon Association’s 2024 general rules. Those rules allow a player to demand an available board at least 44 × 55 cm and no larger than 66 × 88 cm. This is a match rule that applies when a player makes the demand and a qualifying board is available—not a blanket size requirement for personal or casual play. Do not assume this project satisfies that rule.

Plan your veneer and materials before buying
Veneer is central to the repeated geometric pattern, so the listed species—mahogany, maple and walnut—matter more than a generic woodworking-material description. The plan summary does not specify veneer thickness, sheet dimensions or quantities. Check those against the complete plan before selecting a pack of veneer sheets or substituting species; the right choice depends on the specified pattern and build details.
Similarly, the cover’s reference to 1/4-in. MDF and mahogany identifies material types, not a full bill of materials. It is not enough to determine how much to buy or whether a particular piece of stock will meet every component requirement.
