Plant camellias in partial or filtered shade with well-drained soil, and set the root ball level with the surrounding ground in a wide, shallow hole. Choose a cultivar suited to your local winter conditions and garden space; camellias vary in hardiness, mature size, and bloom season.

Choose a camellia that fits your climate and garden

“Camellia” covers plants with different growth habits and cold tolerances. Check the cultivar’s local hardiness, expected mature height and spread, and bloom season before buying. A label naming the species alone may not tell you whether the plant will suit your winters or available space.

UGA Extension reports that selected cold-hardy hybrids are commercially available for USDA zone 6b, but that does not make every camellia suitable there. Confirm a named cultivar’s current regional rating and local performance with your extension service or a knowledgeable nursery. The UGA Extension Forsyth County guide describes variation in size and form: some Camellia hiemalis selections are compact, some C. sasanqua selections grow in a narrow column, and C. japonica may become a large shrub. Its reported sizes are not universal guarantees.

Bloom timing and flower color also vary by cultivar. Use mature dimensions to plan a specimen planting, hedge, or group rather than relying on a generic spacing rule.

Find the right planting site

Choose partial or filtered shade and soil that drains reliably. Camellias tolerate shade and have shallow roots, but do not tolerate persistently wet conditions. Avoid low spots where water collects and sites where large tree roots will compete heavily for water and nutrients. A spot beneath tall pines or on a building’s north side can provide semi-shade, as noted in the UGA Macon-Bibb County camellia newsletter.

Where drainage is poor, improve the site before planting or consider a raised bed. The Macon-Bibb newsletter suggests raising a bed 10 to 12 inches in its Georgia context; treat that as regional guidance, not a universal specification. A plant in a persistently saturated root zone is unlikely to thrive simply because it receives more care.

When to plant

Plant at a time suited to your local climate. UGA’s camellia guidance discusses fall planting in Georgia, but the best planting window varies by region. Ask your local extension service or nursery when roots can establish in your area without facing extreme heat, drought, or severe winter conditions.

How to plant a camellia

  1. Water the root ball. Thoroughly moisten the nursery-grown plant before removing it from its container.
  2. Dig a wide, shallow hole. Make it at least twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper. Both the camellia-specific UGA Macon-Bibb guidance and UGA’s general tree and shrub planting bulletin support this approach.
  3. Set the plant at grade. Place the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil surface. Do not bury the crown.
  4. Backfill with the soil you removed. Return site soil around the root ball, then water to settle it and help remove air pockets. Avoid filling an individual planting hole with organic amendments: they can retain excess moisture and encourage roots to stay confined to the hole, according to UGA’s general planting guidance.
  5. Mulch the soil surface. Mulch helps conserve moisture and limit weeds. Keep it away from the stem so the base does not remain wet.
  6. Space plants for their mature size. The Macon-Bibb newsletter gives a minimum five-foot spacing for multiple camellias, but cultivar size and the intended form should determine the actual distance. Allow room for mature spread rather than treating five feet as a universal spacing recommendation.

Water while the plant establishes

Water regularly after planting, adjusting for rainfall, soil texture, and drainage. Keep the root zone moist, not saturated. Check the soil rather than following a fixed calendar: sandy soil, heavy soil, hot weather, and rainy conditions all change how quickly it dries. UGA’s general planting guidance for trees and shrubs does not prescribe a camellia-specific universal watering schedule.

Fertilize only when it is appropriate

Fertilizer is not a required ingredient in the planting hole. UGA advises waiting until shrubs are established before applying general-purpose granular fertilizer. For established plants, fertilizer choice should reflect soil nutrients and the growth response you want; a soil test and local extension advice can help determine whether an application is needed. Specialty products labeled for azaleas or camellias exist, but that does not mean every camellia needs one. See UGA’s planting bulletin and established-plant guidance.

Prune after flowering

Camellias generally need little pruning. If you need to thin or shape a plant, do so after flowering; pruning earlier can remove buds developing for the next bloom season. UGA’s camellia care guidance covers pruning along with established-plant care.

Recognize and respond to camellia leaf gall

Camellia leaf gall, caused by Exobasidium camelliae, occurs more often on C. sasanqua than C. japonica. It can look unattractive but usually causes little harm to the shrub’s health or flowering. Cool, moist weather favors the disease, and frequent overhead watering can add to the moisture that encourages it.

Remove and discard affected leaves or flowers as soon as symptoms appear, before spores are released. UGA says fungicides are seldom necessary and offer limited control; spraying after symptoms appear will not control the disease during that season. Read the UGA Extension guide to camellia leaf gall for more detail.

Other flower problems, including petal blight, can have symptoms that resemble damage from other causes. A UGA county newsletter recommends removing affected flowers and clearing fallen blossoms and debris, but identify the problem before choosing treatment. Its older Macon-Bibb camellia newsletter also notes that gardeners have often been disappointed by fungicide results for petal blight.
