For a smoother-cut lid, choose a side-cut opener such as the OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge or Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter. How to choose: top-cut or side-cut?
A traditional top-cut opener punctures the lid and cuts around its edge, leaving a sharp metal lid. Handle and discard it carefully. A side-cut opener cuts beside the can’s rim and is designed to leave a smoother lid edge. That can make the lid easier to handle, but it does not eliminate every possible hazard: the can and lid still need careful handling.
Side-cut models may also take more turns or effort, and attaching and operating one can require practice. If you prefer a quick, familiar cranking motion, a conventional opener may suit you better. Beyond the cut, consider whether the handles feel comfortable, whether the knob works for your dominant hand, and how much cleaning the model needs.

The design is right-handed, and its top-cut action leaves sharp edges, a trade-off also described by Prudent Reviews. It is a candidate for readers who want a traditional opener, provided they are comfortable handling the cut lid carefully.

3. OXO Good Grips Soft-Handled Can Opener — for a cushioned grip
Prudent Reviews reports a comfortable, secure grip and smooth cranking in its hands-on test. Bon Appétit notes the cushioned handles and built-in bottle opener, as well as the sharp-edge result of its conventional cut. Cookbook author Erin Clarke shared a personal endorsement with Bon Appétit: “My Oxo can opener has lasted me for years. The rubberized handles are comfortable to grip, it’s easy to clean, and it takes up very little space in my drawer.” That is her experience, not a guarantee of how long every opener will last.
4. Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter — for handedness flexibility and a smoother edge
Reviewed identifies this as a safety pick for left-handed users and describes its knob as ambidextrous; the model also has plastic components. Prudent Reviews says its side-cut action leaves smoother edges but requires more turns and effort than traditional styles. Consider it if a knob that works for either hand and a smoother lid edge are priorities, and you are willing to trade some speed for them.

Cleaning and safe handling
Care instructions are not interchangeable across models. Bon Appétit says the OXO Good Grips opener is not technically dishwasher-safe and recommends hand-washing it and drying it thoroughly to help prevent rust. Apply that advice to the named OXO model; check the manufacturer’s instructions for other openers.
- With a top-cut opener, avoid touching the freshly cut lid edge with bare fingers.
- With a side-cut opener, follow its attachment and operating instructions; a smoother cut is not a guarantee that every edge or surface is harmless.
- Dry the named OXO Good Grips opener thoroughly after hand-washing, as Bon Appétit recommends.
What the reviews do—and do not—establish
Reviewed’s “10 Best Manual Can Openers of 2026” reports testing and names model-level strengths and drawbacks. Prudent Reviews’ comparison, updated November 10, 2025, covers a different set of models and describes trade-offs from hands-on testing.
