For a healthy, flowering candytuft, plant Iberis sempervirens in full sun and well-drained soil, water according to conditions rather than a fixed schedule, and trim lightly after bloom. It is an evergreen or semi-evergreen, low-growing perennial; the same common name is also used for other Iberis species, so check the plant label before following perennial-care advice.
What candytuft is and where it works
Evergreen candytuft (Iberis sempervirens) is a spreading subshrub in the mustard family, Brassicaceae. Its narrow, dark-green leaves form a low mound or groundcover, with clusters of small white flowers typically appearing in spring. Depending on climate, foliage may remain evergreen or become semi-evergreen. North Carolina State Extension describes plants about 6–12 inches tall and 6–18 inches wide; the Royal Horticultural Society gives a height of up to about 30 cm. Size and bloom timing vary with climate and cultivar. North Carolina State Extension; RHS.
Its naturally spreading habit suits edging, borders, rock gardens, groundcover, and planting where it can spill over a wall or container edge. The species is native to southern Europe. North Carolina State Extension; RHS.
Choose a sunny site with fast drainage

Soil and spacing
Good drainage matters more than rich soil. Candytuft grows in moist to slightly dry soil and can tolerate several soil textures; the RHS lists chalk, loam, and sand and notes it can grow well in poor soils. Neutral to alkaline soil is suitable. Avoid places that stay wet: prolonged wetness can contribute to crown rot. North Carolina State Extension; RHS.
As a regional planting guideline, Illinois Extension recommends spacing plants 12–18 inches apart. Allow for the mature size of your particular cultivar and whether you want a quicker or slower groundcover fill. University of Illinois Extension.

Water based on soil and weather
The cited gardening sources do not give a universal watering interval. Instead, check the soil and account for rainfall and whether the plant is newly established: avoid letting it become excessively dry, but do not leave its roots in waterlogged ground. Trim after flowering
When the flowers fade, trim lightly to keep the plant compact and encourage fresh growth. North Carolina Extension recommends cutting back by about one-third; the RHS and Oregon State University describe light trimming or shearing after bloom. Protect plants in cold or exposed sites
Hardiness guidance differs by source and region. Illinois Extension gives USDA Zones 4–8, Oregon State University describes candytuft as hardy to USDA Zone 4, and North Carolina Extension lists Zones 3a–8b. These are source-specific references, not a single agreed range for every garden. The RHS uses the UK H5 rating, defined as hardy through most of the UK at minimum temperatures of −15 to −10°C; this scale should not be treated as a direct USDA-zone conversion. Propagate by seed, cuttings, or rooted stems
Seed and stem cuttings are documented ways to propagate evergreen candytuft. The RHS specifies semi-hardwood cuttings; North Carolina Extension also notes that stems touching the soil may root and form new plants. The cited profiles do not establish a universally applicable seed-sowing date or step-by-step propagation schedule, so use local sowing guidance or a suitable cutting method. Select a cultivar for the space
Cultivars differ in size and flower display, so check the label and compare stated mature dimensions with the planting space. Oregon State University describes ‘Little Gem’ as a dwarf about 6 inches tall, ‘Purity’ as broadly spreading, ‘Snowflake’ as having large flower clusters, and ‘Alexander’s White’ as low-growing and early blooming. The Morton Arboretum also describes ‘Little Gem’ as about 6 inches tall. Cultivar names and measurements can vary by regional or trade-name convention; confirm details for the specific plant being sold. Check for pests, disease, and wet-soil stress
Candytuft is generally described as having few serious pest or disease problems, but caterpillars, slugs, and snails may occur. Occasional problems reported by North Carolina Extension include downy mildew, powdery mildew, fungal leaf spots, and rust. Crown rot is associated with wet soil. If a plant declines in persistently damp ground, check drainage as an initial consideration; a general profile cannot identify the cause of symptoms on an individual plant.
