You can create a useful garden reading nook in a small corner, patio or balcony. Start with the conditions you already have—space, sunlight, shelter and privacy—then add comfortable seating and only the structures or lighting the spot needs.
1. Choose a spot that works when you will use it
Visit possible locations at the time of day you expect to read. Notice where the sun falls, whether wind or nearby paths make the spot uncomfortable, and how easily you can reach it. A quiet corner with existing shelter may need little more than a chair.
Plan around the activity as well as the site: shade and access to power can matter for an outdoor living space, according to University of Florida IFAS Extension’s outdoor living guidance. If the nook is on a balcony or in a small garden, make sure the seat and route to it fit without blocking everyday access. A reading garden reported at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show occupied a 2m by 5m balcony, showing that a dedicated nook does not require a large garden (The Independent).
2. Make seating the centre of the nook
Choose an outdoor chair or bench that fits the available footprint and supports the way you like to read. Consider back and arm support, whether you need to move or store it, and how exposed it will be to weather. An armchair-style lounge seat can feel inviting; a bench may use a narrow space efficiently. These are practical options, not product-tested recommendations.

For a useful layout, leave enough room to sit down and stand up without shifting other furniture. The RHS wellbeing blueprint depicts outdoor reading seating in an enclosed patio garden and recommends thinking of garden areas as spaces for different purposes (RHS Wellbeing Garden Blueprint: Home Gardens).
3. Add shade only where the site needs it
Existing shade from a tree or building may already make the nook comfortable. Check the area at the hours you plan to use it: the RHS notes that light changes over the day and defines full sun as more than six hours of direct sunlight per day at midsummer (RHS shade gardening guidance).
Choose a shade solution to suit the space
- Tree or building shade: Use what is already there if it provides enough coverage at reading time.
- Umbrella: A flexible option for a seat that needs daytime shade without a permanent structure.
- Pergola: An open-topped structure that adds height and can provide shade, depending on its design and setting (RHS pergola guidance).
Compare options by how much coverage they offer, whether they are permanent, the installation involved and how they change the light in the rest of the garden. There is no single best choice for every site.

4. Create privacy with the boundaries you have
A wall, fence, existing screen or tree can give a reading corner a sense of enclosure. If you need more privacy, a trellis with a climbing vine or a hedge can help define the space; screens and trees are other possibilities described by the University of Florida IFAS Extension and the RHS guide to creating a calm garden sanctuary.
Choose plants for the actual light and soil conditions rather than assuming that any plant will thrive in shade. The RHS explains that shade varies and that plant choices should match the site (RHS shade gardening guidance). Layered planting can soften a boundary without needing to build a tall, solid screen.

A small side table is handy for a book or drink if there is room, but keep the seat as the priority. Preserve a clear, level route to it, and consider how the surface and layout work for anyone who needs easier access. A quiet corner should feel separate without making the rest of the garden harder to move through.

6. Treat evening lighting as optional
Natural daylight may be enough. The RHS advice is to avoid lighting a garden where possible, to minimise disruption to wildlife that depends on darkness (RHS guidance on lighting a garden without disturbing wildlife).
If you need light for safety, keep it low and direct it across steps or paths rather than into the wider garden; use warm tones and avoid lighting ponds. Solar lights are one option mentioned by the RHS. For plug-in festoon lights, use a safe electrical system with a circuit breaker and ask a local electrician about the requirements for your home.
