First check that skunks are responsible: small, cone-shaped holes or patches of turned soil can be signs of foraging, but other animals can leave similar damage. Skunks also eat garden pests, so their presence alone does not always call for removal.
Check whether skunks are causing the damage
Skunks may turn up soil as they search for insect larvae and other soil-dwelling prey. The damage can look like small, cone-shaped holes or scattered patches of upturned earth. Dogs and other animals can dig in similar ways, so do not treat the lawn or garden for grubs based on holes alone. Look for signs of larvae or other evidence before deciding what to do. Penn State Extension’s identification guidance describes this kind of digging; its article was updated June 23, 2006.
It may also be reasonable to leave a skunk alone if it is not creating a persistent problem. University of Missouri Extension notes that skunks eat agricultural and garden pests.
Remove food and shelter that attract skunks
- Secure garbage and keep compost inaccessible.
- Bring pet food indoors and clear uneaten food after pets finish eating.
- Pick up fallen fruit.
- Reduce debris, wood piles, and other clutter that could provide cover or shelter.
- If the lawn is being dug up, check whether grubs are actually present before considering treatment. If you use a pest-control product, follow its label and local guidance because treatment can affect other organisms.
These steps make the area less inviting; they are not a guarantee that a skunk will leave or stay away. Missouri Extension and Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources recommend addressing food and shelter opportunities.

Use a physical barrier for a garden or building access point
When digging or access keeps recurring, a barrier is more durable than relying on sound or scent. For garden protection, buried fencing can help exclude skunks. To close openings beneath a shed, deck, porch, or similar structure, galvanized hardware cloth is a practical mesh option. Missouri Extension describes 1/4- or 1/2-inch mesh for sealing openings and buried fencing for gardens; Montana’s guidance also supports galvanized hardware cloth for excluding skunks beneath structures. Choose a layout suited to the area being protected and its site conditions.
Do not seal a suspected den entrance while an animal may still be inside. Check for activity and establish that the den is empty before closing it; otherwise, the barrier could trap the skunk beneath the structure. Montana Department of Agriculture’s skunk-management guidance, revised in 2026, specifically cautions against trapping an animal inside.

Expect limited results from lights, noise, and repellents
Lights, sounds, and retail repellents should not be treated as dependable fixes. Montana’s 2026 guidance says skunks are not easily frightened by lights or noise and that no products are registered for repelling skunks. Michigan’s DNR says retail lights and chemical deterrents may have only brief effects.
Long Beach Animal Care Services discusses mild repellents or harassment in some situations where safe displacement is possible. That local advice is conditional, not evidence that these methods reliably work everywhere. Strong capsaicin preparations also require care. Prioritize securing attractants and using an appropriate barrier rather than counting on a deterrent.

Get local help for an occupied den or removal
Keep pets away from skunks and do not handle one. Skunks are generally reluctant to spray unless cornered or attacked, but trying to capture or force one out can create a risky encounter. If an animal is living beneath a building, or capture or removal is being considered, contact local animal control, wildlife authorities, or a qualified wildlife-control professional. Trapping, relocation, and other disposition rules differ by jurisdiction, so state or municipal advice from somewhere else may not apply where you live. Michigan DNR and Montana’s guidance provide jurisdiction-specific direction.
