To stop grass clumping, mow when the lawn is dry, use a sharp blade, take less grass off per pass, and clear buildup from the deck and discharge area. A deck spray is not the first fix: Troy-Bilt suggests silicone spray as an optional treatment, but the manufacturer guidance available does not establish WD-40 as a cure or compare coating performance.
Why a mower leaves clumps
Wet grass sticks and clogs
Wet clippings are more likely to stick beneath the deck and clog the mower, then fall in clumps across the lawn. Honda and Husqvarna both identify wet grass as a cause of poor discharge. If possible, wait until the grass is dry to the touch. Wet footing is also slippery, so mowing dry is safer.
A dull or damaged blade tears instead of cutting cleanly
A sharp blade cuts grass cleanly. A dull blade can tear it, leaving shredded tips that may turn brown; a blunt blade can also produce an irregular cut. Inspect the blade if clumping comes with ragged or unevenly cut grass. Sharpen it or use a compatible replacement, checking fit against the exact mower model.
Too much grass per pass overloads the mower
Cutting very long grass short in one pass can overwhelm the mower. Husqvarna advises removing no more than one-third of the grass length at a time. Start with a higher cutting height, then make another pass if needed. If engine speed drops or the mower labors, slow down, reduce the swath, or raise the cut. Use the operating speed specified in the mower manual.

Deck buildup or blocked discharge disrupts clipping flow
Residue on the inner deck or around the discharge opening can interfere with the mower’s ability to move clippings out evenly. Moving faster than the deck can cut and discharge can have a similar result. Check for buildup when clumping continues despite dry conditions and a suitable mowing pace.
What to do, in order
- Wait for dry grass. Let the lawn dry to the touch when conditions allow; wet clippings stick and are more likely to clog the deck.
- Inspect the blade. Look for dullness or damage. Do not expect a coating or spray to compensate for a blade that needs sharpening or replacement. Match replacement blades to the mower’s exact model.
- Reduce the amount cut per pass. Raise the height for the first pass through long grass and cut again later if needed. Slow down or narrow the swath if the engine is laboring.
- Clean the deck and discharge area. Follow the owner’s manual for the approved cleaning method, including any washing, tilting, or cleanout-port directions. Let hot equipment cool before cleaning; procedures differ by model.
- Clear clogs only with the mower stopped and secured. Stop the engine and disconnect the starting or ignition source as directed in the manual. Use a stick or other suitable tool to remove clippings—never your hands or feet. Do not reach under an active or unsecured mower.
- Consider a surface treatment only after the basics. Troy-Bilt recommends silicone spray under the deck to help clippings stick less and to help prevent rust, while also directing owners to follow the mower manual. Treat this as an optional manufacturer-specific tip, not a guaranteed or universal fix.
Is WD-40 the answer?
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that WD-40 stops mower clumping, nor does it compare WD-40 with silicone spray or other coatings. Troy-Bilt’s silicone suggestion is specific to its guidance and remains subject to the mower’s owner’s manual. Check that manual before applying any product; the evidence here does not support a blanket claim about which sprays are safe or effective for every mower or deck material.

If the clumps persist
Troubleshoot in this sequence: grass moisture, blade condition, grass height and amount removed per pass, mowing pace and engine load, then deck and discharge cleanliness. If the cause appears to be a blade, confirm exact model compatibility before buying a replacement. If it is a clog, follow the model-specific shutdown and cleanout instructions rather than reaching under the deck.
